Book Fish Parasites A Handbook of Protocols for their Isolation Culture and Transmission

Download or read book Fish Parasites A Handbook of Protocols for their Isolation Culture and Transmission written by Ariadna Sitja-Bobadilla and published by 5m Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good fish health and welfare are essential components of sustainable aquaculture and in this regard, fish parasites constitute a major constraint to production. The aquaculture industries of areas affected by various disease outbreaks have suffered considerably from the impacts of marine and freshwater parasites. It is therefore fundamentally important to take steps to prevent parasite infection, as well as to properly identify, monitor and treat outbreaks when they occur. ParaFishControl, an EU-funded project involving industry, academic and government partners drawn from across Europe, whose work has led to this book, is dedicated to effectively understanding and controlling a diverse range of fish parasites in order to promote the sustainability and competitiveness of the European aquaculture industry. Fish Parasites contains detailed outlines of the most up to date protocols for parasite isolation, culture and transmission, as well as detailed procedures for reproducing parasitic infections in a laboratory environment. Protocols for tasks such as monitoring parasitic infection, isolating parasites and preparing parasite material are explained in detail. In addition, an introduction is provided to the biology and host interactions of each parasite discussed. Fish Parasites provides an essential guide for those who are currently researching fish-parasite relations, as well as for those who may study fish health and welfare more generally or otherwise have broader interests in fish parasites. 5m Books

Book Fish Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fish Diseases Classic Reprint written by Thomas Henry Huxley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish Diseases If the mucous membrane lining the mouth be reckoned with the integument, of which it really is a part, it may be said that the affection under discussion is strictly a cutaneous disease, comparable to ringworm among men. However badly a fish may have been diseased, there is no trace of the affection in the abdominal cavity or in any of the viscera, and the muscles and deep-seated bones appear healthy. Some say that the liver is enlarged and soft, but I have seen the liver quite healthy in very severe cases. The fish appear to suffer considerable irritation from the disease; but how far this is a primary symptom, and how far it results from the entanglement of multitudes of minute grains of sand in the fluffy coat of the diseased skin, is uncertain. Badly diseased fish in aquaria, the water of which contains 'no suspended particles of Sand, do not show signs of any particular irritation. Book Common Parasites of Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Common Parasites of Fishes Classic Reprint written by U. . S. Department of the Interior and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Parasites of Fishes Fish taken commercially, for sport, or raised by fish fanciers are sometimes found to be abnormal due to injury, deformity, disease, or the presence of parasites. This paper is concerned with common parasites of fishes and their recognition. Life cycles and biology are mentioned briefly, and references to more detailed literature are included. Parasites may be defined as animals that live on or in another animal, the host, at the expense of that animal. There are many kinds of parasites which may be found on the surfaces of fish, including the gills, as well as in the flesh and internal organs (fig. Those on the surface are known as external parasites, and those that live inside are called internal parasites. Several types may occur together in a single fish. Some parasites are fairly large (up to several inches) and can be seen easily, but many are microscopic. Scientists who work on parasites describe the organisms, study the life cycles (some have several intermediate hosts), survey the kinds and numbers found in fish, study damage done to fish, and attempt to control them. Re search is carried on by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and some colleges and universities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Pandemic Century written by Mark Honigsbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like sharks, epidemic diseases always lurk just beneath the surface. This fast-paced history of their effect on mankind prompts questions about the limits of scientific knowledge, the dangers of medical hubris, and how we should prepare as epidemics become ever more frequent. Ever since the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, scientists have dreamed of preventing catastrophic outbreaks of infectious disease. Yet, despite a century of medical progress, viral and bacterial disasters continue to take us by surprise, inciting panic and dominating news cycles. From the Spanish flu and the 1924 outbreak of pneumonic plague in Los Angeles to the 1930 'parrot fever' pandemic and the more recent SARS, Ebola, and Zika epidemics, the last 100 years have been marked by a succession of unanticipated pandemic alarms. Like man-eating sharks, predatory pathogens are always present in nature, waiting to strike; when one is seemingly vanquished, others appear in its place. These pandemics remind us of the limits of scientific knowledge, as well as the role that human behaviour and technologies play in the emergence and spread of microbial diseases.

Book Conservation Biology for All

Download or read book Conservation Biology for All written by Navjot S. Sodhi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation Biology for All provides cutting-edge but basic conservation science to a global readership. A series of authoritative chapters have been written by the top names in conservation biology with the principal aim of disseminating cutting-edge conservation knowledge as widely as possible. Important topics such as balancing conversion and human needs, climate change, conservation planning, designing and analyzing conservation research, ecosystem services, endangered species management, extinctions, fire, habitat loss, and invasive species are covered. Numerous textboxes describing additional relevant material or case studies are also included. The global biodiversity crisis is now unstoppable; what can be saved in the developing world will require an educated constituency in both the developing and developed world. Habitat loss is particularly acute in developing countries, which is of special concern because it tends to be these locations where the greatest species diversity and richest centres of endemism are to be found. Sadly, developing world conservation scientists have found it difficult to access an authoritative textbook, which is particularly ironic since it is these countries where the potential benefits of knowledge application are greatest. There is now an urgent need to educate the next generation of scientists in developing countries, so that they are in a better position to protect their natural resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.
