Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Missouri Supreme Court, distinguished legal historian Gerald T. Dunne captures the people and personalities, conflicts and controversies of Missouri's rich legal history. Using a lively anecdotal approach to examine the key cases and political disputes, as well as the strong-minded incumbents who have served on the court's bench, he places Missouri's judicial system in the context of the overall political and legal developments in the United States as a whole. Dunne sets the scene by presenting Missouri before it became a state, tracing the evolution of Indian, Spanish, and French legal influences until the final adoption of a legal system based on the English common law. Then, through a compelling narrative, he recounts not only the factual background of major cases but also interesting biographical information about the disputants. Dunne reveals the fascinating history of the Missouri Supreme Court from the basic violation of human rights in the Dred Scott case up through the ethical questions addressed in the case of Nancy Cruzan's right to die. These are only two of the important decisions of the United States Supreme Court that had their origins in Missouri and are discussed here. These cases are landmarks not only because of what the higher courts said about them, but because of their intrinsic historical interest. Dunne concludes with portraits of key judges who served on the supreme court. He tells how diminutive Abiel Leonard killed a man in a duel on his way to the Missouri Supreme Court bench. And we learn of "The Sage of Sedalia," Henry Lamm, if not the greatest, certainly the most quotable member of the court who left behind a sparkling sequence of aphorisms. By incorporating such colorful details and enlivening his subject with gusto, charm, and humor, Dunne personalizes the Missouri Supreme Court beyond its institutional function. The Missouri Supreme Court is an enduring work that reflects the human condition, in both the law and the society it serves, in all its weakness and strength, error and achievement, and occasional glory.

Book Discovering African American St Louis

Download or read book Discovering African American St Louis written by John Aaron Wright and published by Missouri History Museum. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have been part of the story of St. Louis since the city's founding in 1764. Unfortunately, most histories of the city have overlooked or ignored their vital role, allowing their influence and accomplishments to go unrecorded or uncollected; that is, until the publication of Discovering African American St. Louis: A Guide to Historic Sites in 1994. A new and updated 2002 edition is now available to take readers on a fascinating tour of nearly four hundred African American landmarks. From the boyhood home of jazz great Miles Davis in East St. Louis, Illinois, to the site of the house that sparked the landmark Shelley v. Kraemer court case, the maps, photographs, and text of Discovering African American St. Louis record a history that has been neglected for too long. The guidebook covers fourteen regions east and west of the Mississippi that represent St. Louis's rich African American heritage. In the words of historian Gary Kremer, "No one who reads this book and visits and contemplates the places and peoples whose stories it recounts will be able to look at St. Louis in the same way ever again."

Book Annals of the Missouri Historical and Philosophical Society Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Annals of the Missouri Historical and Philosophical Society Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Missouri Historical and Philoso Society and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Missouri Historical and Philosophical Society, Vol. 1 In the year 1844 a few individuals made an effort to establish a Historical and Philosophical Society for the State of Missouri, similar to institutions successfully established in other States. On the 18th of December in that year, a meeting was held in the Senate Chamber, in the City of Jefferson, at which measures were taken to organize the Society, addresses were delivered explaining its object and utility, a constitution adopted for its government, fourteen gentlemen enrolled their names as members, and a committee was appointed to apply to the General Assembly for an act of incorporation. The Rev. Dr. Goodrich presented to the Society a volume of Ancient Travels in America, and a facsimile engraving of hieroglyphics found in an Indian mound in Illinois, and these constituted the beginning of a library and cabinet which will probably become extensive and valuable. The constitution declared the objects of the Society to be, to collect and preserve all papers, memorials and documents connected with the early history of Missouri, and all statistics in any way pertaining to the population, mineral, navigable and agricultural resources of the State, and to make publication thereof from time to time. In conformity to the request of the Society, an act of incorporation was passed and approved by the Governor on the 27th day of February, 1845. Since that time an act has been passed granting to the Society the use of a room in the Capitol, well adapted to its purposes. The Society is located at the City of Jefferson, but branches or auxilliary Societies may be established in any other part of the State. The City of Jefferson was selected for the location of the Society because it is the Capitol of the State, the place where the Governor and principal executive officers reside and keep their offices - where the General Assembly meets and the laws are made - where the Supreme Court holds its sessions, and where Senators, Representatives, public officers, attornies and other citizens from every county in the State, frequently assemble. It is probable that hereafter the spirit of public improvement and State enterprise will prevail to a greater extent than at the present time, and that many good roads, converging at the Capitol of the State, will render it a place of greater importance and of more frequent resort; and this was another reason for selecting the City of Jefferson as the head-quarters of the Society. It is appropriate that the Historical and Philosophical Society of the State, should be located at the seat of government, and that the public authorities, and citizens from every county, should aid in carrying it into successful operation. The first annual meeting of the Society was held on the 20th of January, 1845, at which officers were chosen for the ensuing year, new members admitted, several distinguished citizens of other States were elected as honorary members; the presentation of some books, mineral specimens, and other articles, was announced, and resolutions were passed requesting the co-operation of the citizens of the State. Book The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri

Download or read book The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri written by Stephen C. LeSueur and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer and fall of 1838, animosity between Mormons and their neighbors in western Missouri erupted into an armed conflict known as the Mormon War. The conflict continued until early November, when the outnumbered Mormons surrendered and agreed to leave the state. In this major new interpretation of those events, LeSueur argues that while a number of prejudices and fears stimulated the opposition of Missourians to their Mormon neighbors, Mormon militancy contributed greatly to the animosity between them. Prejudice and poor judgment characterized leaders on both sides of the struggle. In addition, LeSueur views the conflict as an expression of attitudes and beliefs that have fostered a vigilante tradition in the United States. The willingness of both Missourians and Mormons to adopt extralegal measures to protect and enforce community values led to the breakdown of civil control and to open warfare in northwestern Missouri.
