Book Public Management

Download or read book Public Management written by Barry Bozeman and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1993-07-21 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Public management is emerging as a discipline separate from public administration. Public management, as distinguished from public administration, focuses on strategy rather than on managerial processes, on relations between organizations rather than within them, and on the intersection of public policy and management. Public Management: The State of the Art gathers leading researchers and theorists from various schools of interpretation to convey the latest theories and research and to explore what public management is and what it can be." "The authors assess the state of current public management theory, reveal the effectiveness and strategic dimensions of public management practice, and show how the discipline of public management interacts with policy design and politics. In addition, they examine the implications of technological innovation, including management information systems, and chart new directions for public management theory and research."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management

Download or read book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management written by Stephen P. Osborne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2002 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the public sector has been undergoing major changes throughout the Western industrialized world, the transitional economies of central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and South East Asia. The main thrust of these changes has been to bring public sector management practices closer to those of the private sector. This raises the question of how far public and private sector management are comparable. This set examines the relationships between public sector and private sector management in terms of both classical management theory and the new public management that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. While the collection concentrates on articles from the last 20 years, some historical pieces are also included. The four volumes are arranged along the following lines: volume 1 - for and against the public sector; volume 2 - managing the plural state; volume 3 - broadening the public management perspective; and volume 4 - from policy to practice in public services.

Book Social Accounting and Public Management

Download or read book Social Accounting and Public Management written by Stephen P. Osborne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social accounting as a discipline has challenged the methodology and focus of the larger field of accounting over the last 50 years. More recently it has taken on greater significance for other subjects as well, addressing issues for public policy and management more broadly. These include the issues of the nature of accountability in the contemporary plural state, environmental and societal sustainability, the ethical management and governance of public services and resources, and the creation and sustenance of social capital as an essential element of the modern plural state. Social Accounting and Public Management brings together for the first time researchers from a range of disciplines including accounting, political science, management, sociology and policy studies to discuss and develop our knowledge and theory of the nature of ‘accountability’ in contemporary global society and the challenges it may pose for public policy and management. This book addresses this nexus of all of these issues and disciplines, and through this, makes a contribution to the development of the disciplines of both social accounting and public policy and management.

Book The Art of the State

Download or read book The Art of the State written by Christopher Hood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does public management - the art of the state - so often go wrong, producing failure and fiasco instead of public service? What are the different ways in which control or regulation can be applied to government? Why do we find contradictory recipes for the improvement of public services? Are the forces of modernity set to produce world-wide convergence in ways of organizing government? This important new study aims to explore such questions, central to current debates over public management. Combining contemporary and historical experience, it employs grid/group cultural theory asan organizing frame and method of exploration. Using examples from different places and eras, the study seeks to identify the recurring variety of ideas about how to organize public services. And contrary to widespread claims that modernization will bring a new global uniformity, it argues thatvariety is unlikely to disappear from doctrine and practice in public management.

Book The Resilience of New Public Management

Download or read book The Resilience of New Public Management written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resilience of New Public Management examines the role and significance of New Public Management (NPM) in contemporary society, and explores its emergence and resilience. Eminent scholars have said that NPM only existed from 1980-2000, and that we now live in a post-NPM world. This book tells a very different story. Evidence is presented in this book of 40 years of continuous NPM in public services, including government agencies, universities, and health care. NPM has diffused across sectors and globally since the 1980s, and in the process mutated to become modernization. It also coexists with alternative models of managing public services, including models such as digital era governance and network governance which were considered replacements for NPM. The capacity of NPM to mutate has caught many of its critics by surprise. This capacity for NPM to reinvent itself includes the adoption of Lean Management, the Toyota Production System. Early NPM adopter countries engaged with the use of Lean Management techniques, but late NPM adopters did not. The most recent alternative to NPM is Trust-based management, which has made significant advances in Scandinavian countries. However, Trust-based management is closely linked to proto-NPM and NPM practices and it has itself mutated to present itself as a friendlier and more supportive version of NPM, which at the very least deserves close scrutiny. The above trends are indicative of the resilience of NPM, and its intuitive appeal for policymakers. Its advocates argue that NPM has the capacity to deliver policy outcomes, but this book shows that such claims and aspirations are not always matched by the evidence of NPM in action.

This book provides a completely up-to-date overview of the main theoretical models of public sector management, and examines the key changes that have occurred as more and more public services are contracted out to private organisations, as the public sector itself grapples with 'internal markets'.
