Download or read book Lake and Reservoir Restoration written by G. Dennis Cooke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. Areas for further research and development are also highlighted. This book is comprised of 16 chapters organized into four sections. After an introduction to the theory of the problem and the restoration technique, the discussion turns to the various restoration methods such as those used for physical and chemical control of nutrients. Diversion and advanced waste treatment, hypolimnetic withdrawal, and dilution and flushing are considered along with phosphorus precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. Case studies and success stories are presented and the costs and potential negative impacts of the methods are examined. The following chapters focus on methods to control plant biomass, including artificial circulation, water-level drawdown, harvesting, biological control, and surface and sediment covers. A chapter on liming acidified lakes concludes this text. This monograph will be useful to professional limnologists and engineers, on-site lake or reservoir managers, and those who are interested in learning about the problems and management of lakes and reservoirs.

Download or read book Charleston Charleston written by Walter J. Fraser, Jr. and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often called the most "Southern" of Southern cities, Charleston was one of the earliest urban centers in North America. It quickly became a boisterous, brawling sea city trading with distant ports, and later a capital of the Lowcountry plantations, a Southern cultural oasis, and a summer home for planters. In this city, the Civil War began. And now, in the twentieth century, its metropolitan area has evolved into a microcosm of "the military-industrial complex." This book records Charleston's development from 1670 and ends with an afterword on the effects of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, drawing with special care on information from every facet of the city's life—its people and institutions; its art and architecture; its recreational, social and intellectual life; its politics and city government. The most complete social, political, and cultural history of Charleston, this book is a treasure chest for historians and for anyone interested in delving into this lovely city, layer by layer.

Download or read book Ain t No Sense Worryin written by Mickey Rivers and published by Sports Pub. This book was released on 2003 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We'll do all right if we can capitalize on our mistakes." A famous Yogiism? Possibly Stengelese? Guess again -- it's Gozzlespeak, straight from the mouth of Mick the Quick himself. Mickey Rivers is one of baseball's all-time great characters and a lovable legendary New York Yankee. He was an All-Star and a two-time world champion during the wild days of the "Bronx Zoo" Yankees. Now, for the first time, the man who once told teammate Reggie Jackson that he should "stop readin' and writin' and start hittin'" has himself put pen to paper. In Ain't No Sense Worryin', "Mick the Quick" takes you back to a time when the world champion Yankees were wild, free agency was young, and his goals in the game were to "hit .300, score 100 runs, and stay injury-prone." Like his old coach Yogi Berra, Mick speaks a language all his own, and his streetwise stories ring true with love, humor, and genuine affection for the game he played and the friends he made. From the devoted grandmother who inspired him to make it in baseball, through his glory days on the diamonds of California, New York and Texas, to his increasingly legendary stints as elder statesman and current spring training instructor for the Yankees, Mick the Quick has a collection of quotations, stories, and memories that will have you cracking up and possibly scratching your head in confusion. So sit back, stop worryin', and relive a time when "Me, George, and Billy were two of a kind." Book jacket.
