Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many different ways in which economists have tried to analyse public expenditure, the most relevant to Indian economic development is that which links the level of public expenditure with the rate at which the state can accumulate capital. The abstract theory of this link, however, must be complemented by a historical account of the degree to which a state accumulation policy was understood by Indian policy makers, and of the other (often inconsistent) elements in the economic strategy of Indian nationalism. After attempting to provide accounts both of the abstract theory and of the institutional and policy context within which it was applied, this book analyses original empirical data on public expenditure in India between 1960 and 1970. The real growth rate of public expenditure, its functional and economic composition at the all-India level are presented, and the strong contrast between the patterns of the first and last five year periods is elucidated. The effect of the 1965-67 droughts and bad harvests in producing this contrast is assessed.

Download or read book IMF Staff papers written by International Monetary Fund. Research Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1958-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect transactions with the IMF have on the monetary situation within a country when the foreign exchange purchased from the IMF is used to meet a balance of payments deficit. In some countries, the national currency counterpart is kept on deposit to the credit of the IMF at the central bank. In other countries, the government substitutes a noninterest-bearing note for the national currency counterpart of a transaction with the IMF. It is with the effects of the latter practice that this paper is primarily concerned. The effect of a balance of payments deficit on the money supply will be offset if credit is expanded to finance a government deficit, investment by business, or spending by consumers. The ultimate effect on the money supply will depend upon how the government deals with the national currency turned over to it by the Exchange Equalization Account. Considerable caution is required in concluding that a balance of payments deficit is likely to be moderate and temporary.

Download or read book Reassessing the Role of Management in the Golden Age written by Daniela Felisini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical reassessment of the role of the public sector during the Golden Age in both advanced and emerging economies. Contributions focus on a major player in the setting of mixed economies: the top managers of state-owned enterprises. Bringing together world-renowned scholars, this collection analyzes the actions of these managers and their contribution to the rise and fall of the mixed economy during the Golden Age, opening up a comparative perspective of the topic. The book forces readers to reconsider how crucial state-owned enterprises were for economic recovery and for the modernization of the production apparatus of many countries in Western Europe, India, Latin America and South Africa. Key chapters discuss state-owned enterprises in twentieth-century Europe, the managerial revolution in Italy, the role of the state in Argentine industrialization, and the organization of capital in the Indian economy. This insightful collection will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in economic history and the socio-economic impact of state-owned companies around the globe.

Book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management

Download or read book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management written by Stephen P. Osborne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2002 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the public sector has been undergoing major changes throughout the Western industrialized world, the transitional economies of central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and South East Asia. The main thrust of these changes has been to bring public sector management practices closer to those of the private sector. This raises the question of how far public and private sector management are comparable. This set examines the relationships between public sector and private sector management in terms of both classical management theory and the new public management that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. While the collection concentrates on articles from the last 20 years, some historical pieces are also included. The four volumes are arranged along the following lines: volume 1 - for and against the public sector; volume 2 - managing the plural state; volume 3 - broadening the public management perspective; and volume 4 - from policy to practice in public services.

Book The Development of Capitalism in Africa

Download or read book The Development of Capitalism in Africa written by John Sender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this work challenges underdevelopment analyses of Africa’s past experiences and future prospects, and builds upon a very wide range of recent historical research to argue that the impact of Capitalism has resulted in economic progress and significant improvements in living standards. In marked contrast to the dependency approach, they propose that the important political and economic differences between the experiences of developing countries should be stressed and analysed. The argument is supported by a detailed look at the emergence since 1900 of capitalist social relations of production in nine different countries.

Valuable lessons from India's stabilization policies explain how structural adjustment can also benefit long-term growth in the subcontinent. This analysis looks at various government policies that have influenced imports and exports, national investment and savings, gross national and domestic product, and the balance of payments. It specifically examines the degree to which stabilization has reformed agriculture and industry and has improved the relationship between the public and private sectors. Book New Perspectives on Pakistan s Political Economy

Download or read book New Perspectives on Pakistan s Political Economy written by Matthew McCartney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a major intervention in the debates around the nature of the political economy of Pakistan, focusing on its contemporary social dynamics. This is the first comprehensive academic analysis of Pakistan's political economy after thirty-five years, and addresses issues of state, class and society, examining gender, the middle classes, the media, the bazaar economy, urban spaces and the new elite. The book goes beyond the contemporary obsession with terrorism and extremism, political Islam, and simple 'civilian–military relations', and looks at modern-day Pakistan through the lens of varied academic disciplines. It not only brings together new work by some emerging scholars but also formulates a new political economy for the country, reflecting the contemporary reality and diversification in the social sciences in Pakistan. The chapters dynamically and dialectically capture emergent processes and trends in framing Pakistan's political economy and invite scholars to engage with and move beyond these concerns and issues.
