Book 2015 Global Hunger Index

Download or read book 2015 Global Hunger Index written by von Grebmer, Klaus and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developing world has made progress in reducing hunger since 2000. The 2015 Global Hunger Index (GHI) shows that the level of hunger in developing countries as a group has fallen by 27 percent. Yet the state of hunger in the world remains serious. This marks the tenth year that IFPRI has assessed global hunger using this multidimensional measure. This report’s GHI scores are based on a new, improved formula that replaces the child underweight indicator of previous years with child stunting and child wasting. This change reflects the latest thinking on the most suitable indicators for child undernutrition, one of three dimensions of hunger reflected in the GHI formula. Across regions and countries, GHI scores vary considerably. Regionally, the highest GHI scores, and therefore the highest hunger levels, are still found in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia. Despite achieving the largest absolute improvements since 2000, these two regions still suffer from serious levels of hunger. Levels of hunger are alarming or serious in 52 countries. Most of the eight countries with alarming GHI scores are in Africa south of the Sahara. While no countries are classified in the extremely alarming category this year, this high level of hunger could still exist. Due to insufficient data, 2015 GHI scores could not be calculated for places that recently suffered from high levels of hunger, including Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. 2015 Global Hunger Index Interactive App: http://ghi.ifpri.org

Book An Overview of the Public Distribution System

Download or read book An Overview of the Public Distribution System written by Tarumoy Chaudhuri and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Availability of food grains is a necessary but not passable condition to ensure food security to the poor. In addition to food availability, it is necessary that food accessibility is also ensured to the poor households. This can be done either by raising the level of incomes of these poor households or by providing them food grains at subsidized prices. Public Distribution System (PDS) is a way to ensure accessibility of food grains to these poor households. Public Distribution System (PDS) means distribution of essential commodities to a large number of people through a network of Fair Price Shops (FPS) on a recurring basis. In India, PDS evolved as a major instrument of the Government's economic policy for ensuring availability of foodgrains to the public at affordable prices as well as for enhancing the food security for the poor. It is an important constituent of the strategy for poverty eradication and is intended to serve as a safety net for the poor. PDS is operated under the joint responsibility of the Central and the State Governments. The Central Government has taken the responsibility for procurement, storage, transportation and bulk allocation of foodgrains, etc. The responsibility for distributing the same to the consumers through the network of Fair Price Shops (FPS) rests with the State Governments. The operational responsibilities including allocation within the State, identification of families below poverty line, issue of ration cards, supervision and monitoring the functioning of FPS rest with the State Governments. The present project will try to give an overview of the PDS system as it existed in the country. It would also look into the new system of Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) as has been introduced recently. The project would firstly outline the present poverty situation and the agricultural sector in India and then proceed to look at the effect of the PDS on the Indian economy as a whole. An effort will also be made to estimate the future benefits or losses that PDS might have on the Indian economy as a whole.
