Download or read book For Everything a Season written by Warren Johnson and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren Johnson’s important book takes reeaders on a journey into the medieval way of life when the edict of “Do unto others as you would yourself” was the rallying cry that helped people work together for a common good. So where did it all go so wrong? What happened to caring for our fellow human? Our land? Our resources? Warren argues that much was lost with the Age of Enlightenment. While the age gave us reason and science, it distanced us from the sacred, leaving us with little more than an insatiable appetite for the new, the bigger, the faster, the shinyer, and the shallower. For Everything a Season reignites the sacred flame. Warren urges us to recommit to faith, while maintaining our reason. Guided by traditional principles embedded in the great teachings of the New and Old Testaments, he offers a hopeful path to creating a modern eco-system where every individual consumes and creates in balance with the sacred whole. In this way, we do away with excess, make reparations for our past, and ultimately lead a happier, healthier life. There is more meaning to the simple life than has been understood. This book offers the map to true eternal treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DON’T MISS PHOEBE ROBINSON’S COMEDY SERIES EVERYTHING’S TRASH—NOW ON FREEFORM! New York Times bestselling author and star of 2 Dope Queens Phoebe Robinson is back with a new, hilarious, and timely essay collection on gender, race, dating, and the dumpster fire that is our world. Wouldn't it be great if life came with instructions? Of course, but like access to Michael B. Jordan's house, none of us are getting any. Thankfully, Phoebe Robinson is ready to share everything she has experienced to prove that if you can laugh at her topsy-turvy life, you can laugh at your own. Written in her trademark unfiltered and witty style, Robinson's latest collection is a call to arms. Outfitted with on-point pop culture references, these essays tackle a wide range of topics: giving feminism a tough-love talk on intersectionality, telling society's beauty standards to kick rocks, and calling foul on our culture's obsession with work. Robinson also gets personal, exploring money problems she's hidden from her parents, how dating is mainly a warmed-over bowl of hot mess, and definitely most important, meeting Bono not once, but twice. She's struggled with being a woman with a political mind and a woman with an ever-changing jeans size. She knows about trash because she sees it every day--and because she's seen roughly one hundred thousand hours of reality TV and zero hours of Schindler's List. With the intimate voice of a new best friend, Everything's Trash, But It's Okay is a candid perspective for a generation that has had the rug pulled out from under it too many times to count.

Download or read book All Things to All People written by Louis DeThomasis and published by ACTA Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word but was used by Jesus often to clarify to his disciples his teaching was different from the conventional wisdom of the time: "But I say to you..." This was never more true when he was speaking about how the disciples (right up to today) were to act toward one another and toward those outside the group. Louis DeThomasis, a well-respected De La Salle Christian Brother and President Emeritus of St. Mary's University of Minnesota, uses this method of Jesus to look at the Catholic Church today and how it must change if it is to carry out the mission it has been given by its founder. "Even if at times the observations of this book may seem quite critical (or certainly at least impolitical or undiplomatic, given the clashes and tensions in the church today)," he insists, "I think it's about time that the People of God find the courage to speak out to all Jesus' followers and to all people of good faith, and to speak up to all institutional church leaders forcefully, although always with Christian love. Love for the church does not preclude criticism of or about the church. If we become 'one' in the church (as we pray every day in the Creed), it seems to me indisputable- whether we are conservative, moderate, or progressive by nature- that we desperately need to increase our knowledge and understanding of the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, in a caring, supportive, and loving Christian Spirit." Buckle up for an old-fashioned but good-spirited Catholic brawl about the future of the Catholic Church in the twenty-first century. You may not agree with every one of Brother Louis' arguments, but they will cause you to think about what kind of Church we need and want...or, better yet, what kind of church Jesus wants us to be.

Download or read book The Road Back Home written by Joseph Cavon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you desire to know and experience God’s exhilarating journey for creation? The Bible reveals God’s magnificent plans for his dominion and most valued treasure, mankind. However, because of its many complexities, most miss the big picture of Scripture, focusing on obscure doctrinal details, and consequently are confused about their own role and God’s purposes. This book was written as a tool to assist in overcoming these difficulties by presenting the structure of the Bible through analyzing three fundamental plans of God—his original plan for mankind, which was corrupted by sin, his salvation plan that triumphed over sin, and his restoration plan that is steadily returning creation to its genesis. By first accurately examining and gaining a solid grasp of the flow of Scripture through these plans prior to delving into its many doctrinal details, one can far more effectively comprehend its essential message and the intentions of God’s heart toward his people. This book’s intended audience is not merely new believers in Christ, but also those who have been Christians for many years without yet obtaining a firm proficiency of God’s comprehensive message, necessary for healthy growth and fruitfulness. Come, then, and experience the epic revelation of God’s heart.

Download or read book All About Process written by Kim Grant and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, many prominent and successful artists have claimed that their primary concern is not the artwork they produce but the artistic process itself. In this volume, Kim Grant analyzes this idea and traces its historical roots, showing how changing concepts of artistic process have played a dominant role in the development of modern and contemporary art. This astute account of the ways in which process has been understood and addressed examines canonical artists such as Monet, Cézanne, Matisse, and De Kooning, as well as philosophers and art theorists such as Henri Focillon, R. G. Collingwood, and John Dewey. Placing “process art” within a larger historical context, Grant looks at the changing relations of the artist’s labor to traditional craftsmanship and industrial production, the status of art as a commodity, the increasing importance of the body and materiality in art making, and the nature and significance of the artist’s role in modern society. In doing so, she shows how process is an intrinsic part of aesthetic theory that connects to important contemporary debates about work, craft, and labor. Comprehensive and insightful, this synthetic study of process in modern and contemporary art reveals how artists’ explicit engagement with the concept fits into a broader narrative of the significance of art in the industrial and postindustrial world.
Download or read book Literature and the Remains of the Death Penalty written by Peggy Kamuf and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have generations of philosophers failed or refused to articulate a rigorous challenge to the death penalty, when literature has been rife with death penalty abolitionism for centuries? In this book, Peggy Kamuf explores why any properly philosophical critique of capital punishment in the West must confront the literary as that which exceeds the logical demands of philosophy. Jacques Derrida has written that “the modern history of the institution named literature in Europe over the last three or four centuries is contemporary with and indissociable from a contestation of the death penalty.” How, Kamuf asks, does literature contest the death penalty today, particularly in the United States where it remains the last of its kind in a Western nation that professes to be a democracy? What resources do fiction, narrative, and poetic language supply in the age of the remains of the death penalty? Following a lucid account of Derrida’s approach to the death penalty, Kamuf pursues this question across several literary texts. In reading Orwell’s story “A Hanging,” Kamuf explores the relation between literary narration and the role of the witness, concluding that such a witness needs the seal of literary language in order to account for the secret of the death penalty. The next chapter turns to the American scene with Robert Coover’s 1977 novel The Public Burning, which restages the executions of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg as an outlandish public spectacle in Times Square. Because this fictional device reverses the drive toward secrecy that, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, put an end to public executions in the West, Kamuf reads the novel in a tension with the current tendency in the U.S. to shore up and protect remaining death penalty practices through increasingly pervasive secrecy measures. A reading of Norman Mailer’s 1979 novel The Executioner’s Song, shows the breakdown of any firm distinction between suicide and capital execution and explores the essential affinity between traditional narrative structure, which is plotted from the end, and the “plot” of a death penalty. Final readings of Kafka, Derrida, and Baudelaire consider the relation between literature and law, showing how performative literary language can “play the law. “A brief conclusion, titled “Postmortem,” reflects on the condition of literature as that which survives the death penalty. A major contribution to the field of law and society, this book makes the case for literature as a space for contesting the death penalty, a case that scholars and activists working across a range of traditions will need to confront.
