Download or read book Investing in agriculture human capital Roles for the private sector written by Franzel, Steven and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 1.5 billion people, most of the world’s poor, live on small farms in developing countries. Improving livelihoods requires investing in their “agriculture human capital”: skills, abilities and knowledge, social and personal attributes and experience to enable them to farm productively and sustainably. These include technical agricultural skills in crops and livestock, business skills in marketing, records, as well as functional skills such as empowerment, leadership, and innovation. There is high demand for human capital development but public agencies often cannot provide it and smallholders cannot afford to pay for it. There is great need for it as agriculture becomes more commercial, information- and skill-intensive and climate change increases weather hazards. This brief aims to assess the private sector’s role in developing smallholder human capital, and the advantages, limitations and challenges of this involvement. It outlines how development agencies and governments can facilitate the private sector to increase investment. The brief concludes with recommendations on how development agencies and governments can support and facilitate private sector investment. The main providers of non-formal agricultural train ing are extension and advisory services (EAS), mainly government, private companies, NGOs and farmer organizations. Other providers include agricultural technical and vocational education and training centres, on-the-job training such as internships, and informal interaction between farmers.

As public sector research declines in the countries of the north and the south, research and development carried out by the private sector becomes more important for innovations that have economic potential. In some cases networks between local firms and multinationals can support learning which leads to economic growth. What are the policies which support such partnerships and what are the institutional arrangements that foster research? Seven case studies from Argentina, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Tanzania, Peru, the Philippines and Vietnam examine how policies have been developed and implemented to encourage innovation.

Book Guide for the design and implementation of public private partnerships for agribusiness development in Africa

Download or read book Guide for the design and implementation of public private partnerships for agribusiness development in Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author]. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unleashing the potential for inclusive agricultural growth and transformation in Africa requires coordinated and strategic public and private investment in the agriculture sector. [Author] Against a background of limited government resources and expertise, public–private partnerships are increasingly being promoted as a mechanism to pool resources, reduce risk, improve productivity and drive growth in the agriculture and food sectors. [Author] In line with this trend, many African countries have recently expressed an interest in further understanding the potential for public–private partnerships for agribusiness development (agri-PPPs) to deliver on these transformative goals. [Author] This publication aims to provide guidance to African policymakers and potential private sector investors on the core principles of designing and implementing agri-PPPs that will promote the transformation of Africa’s agriculture sector in an inclusive and sustainable way. [Author] This area of work is of particular interest to the African Union Commission (AUC) which has highlighted agri-PPPs as a key tool in the delivery of the results under the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) and the Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth for Shared Prosperity and Livelihoods.
