Book Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint written by Conwy Lloyd Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology for Teachers On the comments of another critic I may be allowed to say a few words, since they may serve to elucidate my point of View. The child when he comes under the discipline of the teacher, even in the kindergarten, has already reached a certain level of mental develop ment; he has gained some experience; he behaves in more or less appropriate ways under given circum stances; he already possesses a good deal of intelligence although he has but little systematic knowledge. Why not start with him as he then stands? Why trouble to inquire how this practical and serviceable experience had its origin in the early months or years of life? The teacher, as such, it may be said, has little concern with it. He may take its existence for granted. Such is the contention of my critic. I think it not im probable that others may, in some degree, share his views. They may feel some impatience with my genetic treatment of the initial stages of the dawn of child consciousness, and the very beginnings of the mental life. But it must be remembered that the process of develop ment is one and continuous. It is impossible adequately to understand its later phases if the earlier stages are merely taken for granted. If once the principle of taking things for granted is admitted, we, so far, depart from the more rational principle of explaining matters. In every branch of inquiry which deals with continuity of process it has been found that the initial stages cannot be disregarded if the develop ment as a whole is to be rendered clear. If we just accept the child as he is when he comes to school, without inquiring how he came to be what he already is, we shall not be in a position to understand how best to graft the systematic knowledge with which we are chie y concerned on the naive experience with which it should be in vital touch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Mind: An Introduction to Psychology for Teachers This book treats in a simpler and more abbreviated form the same matter as that dealt with in the larger work entitled The Fundamentals of Psychology. It is intended for use by students in training colleges, by candidates preparing for such professional examinations as the Board of Education Teacher's Certificate, and by young teachers generally. It is intended to be merely an introduction to the subject Of Educational Psychology, and, it is hoped, will serve as an inducement to a further study of the subject. Chapters VIII, IX., and XI. Of this book have been specially added with a view to covering more completely the Syllabus of the Board Of Education for candidates for the Teacher's Certificate. The book should prove specially helpful in training colleges, where the amount of time devoted to Psychology, as well as other considerations, makes the use Of a larger and more detailed work impossible. Many minor matters have had to be omitted, and much Of what is expounded has had to be treated in popular and summary form. But, in spite of its brevity, the book will be found to give a clear account of the nature and development of child mind, so far as it is understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Psychology for Teachers During the last decade a marked interest in the scientific study of education has developed. One of the results Of this increased interest and more intensive study is the addi tional requirement of educational psychology in all teacher training courses. Many laymen, indeed, have become inter ested in educational processes to a degree greater than ever before. Much that may be legitimately treated in a course in general psychology is Of purely academic interest and has no value for education. Therefore some topics that appear in works on general psychology are not included here. This book has been written for this ever-widening public the young teachers who wish to get a right start in their pro fession by becoming acquainted with the principles of the subject; the Older teachers who wish to have the results of experiment and research that have met with most favor; and that great number of persons interested in the subject of edu cation who have faith in the boys and girls of to-day and wish to have a part in making them the worthy Citizens of to-morrow. Theoretically, all psychologists are agreed that a course of study should proceed from the known to the unknown and from the concrete to the general; that students should learn by doing; that the problem or project method of teaching is superior to memorization of a textbook; that functional not faculty psychology should be taught; that individual differences in students should be taken into account; that a beginning course should be designed for the benefit of the great majority who never go farther; etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book How to Teach Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Teach Classic Reprint written by George Drayton Strayer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible. In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education. The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children. Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education. The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions. Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated. Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved. These references are to the author's Elements of Psychology, which is in a sense an introduction to the present volume, but any standard course in psychology which gives due emphasis to the laws of mental connections will supply the preparation needed. Book The Teacher s Handbook of Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teacher s Handbook of Psychology Classic Reprint written by James Sully and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology IN the present edition the Handbook has been revised throughout, and to a large extent re-written. It is now between one-sixth and one-fifth larger than it was in the fourth edition. The additions include some chapters which are wholly new, namely, i., xv., xvi., xvii. And xx. Other chapters - more particularly, iv., vi., vii., viii., ix., x., xii., xiii., xiv., xviii. And xix. - have undergone so much alteration as to be largely new. In making these changes I have sought, while keeping to the original form and mode of treatment of the book, as well as to its original intention - as an introduction to psychology - to make it more adequately representative of the present state of psychology and of educational thought. As a result of the changes the work will be found somewhat more advanced in parts. Any difficulties thus introduced, however, may be considerably lessened by a study of the book under the guidance of a competent lecturer, who may probably advise the student to omit certain portions on a first reading: e.g., on the theory of Development, and on Perception. In this way, I trust, a work which has so long kept its place in the department of educational psychology may continue to be a useful introduction to the subject - primarily for teachers, and secondarily for others who in the past have found it serviceable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Behavior: A First Book in Psychology for Teachers The materials have been organized somewhat upon the spiral plan. The first chapter embodies a con crete case of human behavior, described in non-technical language, and illustrating the various factors that con dition behavior and control conduct both in customary and in unusual situations. Thus an initial bird's eye view of the treatment is given at the outset. The remaining chapters of Part I are also general in their nature, treating upon a simpler and more primi tive plane the topics that are later analyzed more minutely. This plan of organization obviously involves a certain amount of repetition; but the repetition, it is believed, will serve a useful purpose in impressing upon the student the fundamental fact that the higher and more complicated forms of behavior have grown out of the simpler forms, and involve these simpler forms as indispensable elements. Book Psychology Applied to the Art of Teaching Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychology Applied to the Art of Teaching Classic Reprint written by Joseph Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology Applied to the Art of Teaching It is said that, in some of the engagements in a war lately waged, tons of ammunition were used, and yet only comparatively few of the combatants were killed or wounded. It was not merely an instance of poor marksmanship on a large scale, for a war correspondent reported that the majority never aimed at all, and many had even removed the "sights" from their rifles as inconveniences. In the great educational army, in its campaign against ignorance, do we not find similar conditions and a like waste of the infinitely more valuable ammunition of life forces and life energies, all for want of "aim." This volume is intended to assist the young educational recruits, while they are engaged in target practice in the training institutes. It is written by one experienced in teaching and in training teachers, for the special benefit of untrained and inexperienced beginners in the noble profession of teaching. Instead of giving many rules without reasons, it seeks to lead the young teacher to such a knowledge of the laws of mental growth that he may be able to draw up intelligently his own rules for the successful prosecution of his calling as an educator. Book Lectures on Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Psychology for Teachers Classic Reprint written by Arthur B. Morrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Psychology for Teachers As you will see from the outline I have placed on the blackboard, there are three phases of the work of teaching, namely, in struction, repetition or drill, and testing or recitations. Hearing a recitation is only one part of teaching. In many schools the teachers fail to do the more important parts of teaching, namely the instruction and drill parts. Now some truths of psychology are needed in order to realize when a teacher ought to instruct, and when she ought to drill. Some teachers are wasting time because they do not know this. I venture to say that when we go out into the schools and find a good teacher, she -is oftengood because she is an expert in drill. Some times we need to give instruction and some times we need to drill. It depends upon the subject we are teaching. Psychology will make plain to you when you must drill and when you must instruct. Now let me give you an illustration to make plain what I mean when I say that sometimes we should have a minimum amount of knowl edge and a maximum amount of drill, and sometimes a maximum amount of knowledge and a minimum amount of drill. Take for example riding a bicycle. How much knowl edge does it require? It is practice that it is needed here. In three minutes a person can tell all that is required to know how to ride a bicycle. The man who, when asked if he could play a violin said that he did not know, he had never tried, suggested this truth. The knowl edge part of playing the violin is not very great; it is necessary to repeat, - repetition is the important feature. Book The Psychology of the Teacher

Download or read book The Psychology of the Teacher written by Martin Luther Reymert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of the Teacher: And Introductory Study This study has grown organically out of my Norwegian work in child psychology (50, In going over the inter national literature which had more or less direct bearing upon my problems I was frequently confronted with the remark: This result is probably due to the influence of the teacher. In my own work also I very soon found it necessary to seek refuge in this mysterious sesame whenever I attempted an explanation, and special statistical and psychological data failed to solve the problem in hand. The fact (witnessed by all studies from all countries of children's ideals) that by far the greater part of the children gain their ideals from the curriculum, and the relation of this to the results of recent studies on imitation and suggestion,1 indicated to me that the problem of the role of the teacher was one which stood in need of immediate investigation by all available means and methods. Book Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy

Download or read book Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy written by R. Schulze and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy: For Teachers, Normal Colleges, and Universities The present volume has found a wide sale in Germany, and the translator trusts it will be of help to students and teachers in Britain and America. It makes no claim to be a complete text-book or manual of experimental psychology. The author emphasises this in his preface. It merely deals with those methods of experimental psychology that are particularly adapted to educational purposes. The author himself has carried out many experiments and these he takes as a foundation for his work. Many are not exact, and many are merely tentative, but such work is of value to the beginner, for it shows him what he must expect in his own work, and the suggestions of the author as to where further experiments are required are in valuable. Most of these experiments were carried out in the Psychological Institute of the Leipsic Teachers' Associa tion, an institute founded and supported by an associa tion of elementary school teachers. This should prove a stimulus to British associations to follow on the same lines. Only by making education a science can teachers hope to raise the status of their profession.
