Book excerpt: COVID-19 intensified the demand on mental health professionals (MHPs) and the US mental healthcare system, contributing to an already limited and under-resourced system. Workplace stress among MHPs has implications for the quality of patient care they provide and personal work satisfaction. This study was a secondary analysis of data on individuals who self-identified as mental health workers obtained from a more extensive study of a national sample of healthcare workers (i.e. medical, nursing, and mental health workers) who provided clinical services during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The secondary analysis examined the relationship between COVID-19 related stress and symptoms of psychological distress in the subsample of mental health workers (n=151). Findings indicated a positive relationship between professional stress level and psychological distress symptoms. Findings also demonstrated that variables such as age, sex, and career stage did not influence the relationship between professional stress and psychological distress. These findings suggest that mental health workers are susceptible to COVID-related professional stress regardless of their age, sex, or career stage and may benefit from interventions that bolster resilience and well-being.
