Courses like geography, zoology, botany, anatomy, and history of art necessitate the use of graphic materials. No one has hitherto brought together within the covers of a single volume the interesting and useful pictures which relate to various phases of psychology. It included a list of 56 tests grouped according to ages from 3 to I 3, each group containing from four to eight tests. Most of the tests of the 1905 series were included, the additions including in a large measure tests of a scholastic nature. The authors gave directions for applying the series and for computing the resultant mental age. A Child testing three years below his chronological age was to be considered defective. Although the scheme of the 1908 series was entirely quantita tive, the authors did not discard the qualitative idea, and they cautioned against the application of the scale in the manner of a measure of height or weight. Book The Principles of Psychology Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Psychology Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by William James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William James' The Principles of Psychology, Volume One is an epic work in the field of psychology and one of the most well known books of the discipline. James was a philosopher and psychologist who spent most of his adult life employed by Harvard University, where he developed and taught some of the most influential psychological theories of the time. The book opens with an analysis of the functions of the brain and a discussion of the scope of psychology. From there, James' focus is primarily on the localization of functions within the brain, or how specific parts of the brain act as neural centres for the human body's senses. James relies on a comparative method in which humans are compared to other animals, and the importance of instincts in shaping the actions of man are discussed in detail. The primary value in reading the work of William James is to absorb the author's ability to contextualize psychology. Much of what is known about psychology today is a direct result of the foundation laid by James. If one wants truly to understand the present, it is important to understand the past. The Principles of Psychology, Volume One is rightly considered a masterpiece. For the experienced student of psychology, this book is an absolute must-read. It is a work that begs to be meditated upon and will surely ruminate in your consciousness long after you turn the last page. A true classic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook Psychology It appears, then, that the distinctive characteristic of mind is, to be conscious of its phenomena; and con sequently these phenomena are often described as phenomena of consciousness. Like the phenomena of external nature, those of our internal consciousness will commonly be found to be composite, and therefore to require analysis. In order to such an analysis, it is necessary to know the elementary materials which enter into the composition of the phenomena analysed; and accordingly the description of these materials will form the subject of the First Book of this work, which, as applying to all the phenomena of mind in general, may be appropriately styled General Psychology. The Second Book, to be distinguished as Special Psychology, will investigate the various combinations which form the special phases of our mental life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Psychology Standpoint. Professor Ward states in his article on psychology that the subject can best be defined by its standpoint. The several physical sciences are Objective in their nature in the sense that the objects of their investigation are open to the scrutiny and inquiry of all. They are, in a sense, public property; but mental states, the subject - matter of psychology, are open only to the View of the individuals concerned. A can know directly only his own mental states, and not those of his friend B. A conscious state is a part of an individual's conscious ness. It belongs to a self and a self alone. It is an item in a stream of thought which is the individual's own possession; or, as Locke puts it, The scene of ideas making up one man's thoughts cannot be laid open to the immediate view of another.' In this sense, psycho logy is said to be individualistic in its nature. In another sense, the scope of psychology is, indirectly, universal. In a way it has to do with all experience. In this sense 'the Whole choir of heaven and furniture of earth in so far as they are presentations to a subject, are related to the subject-matter of psychology. Methods. Book excerpt: #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A timeless, structure-bending classic that explores how actions of individual lives impact the past, present and future—from a postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in fiction One of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century • Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. The novel careens, with dazzling virtuosity, to Belgium in 1931, to the West Coast in the 1970s, to an inglorious present-day England, to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok, and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history. But the story doesn’t end even there. The novel boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, David Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky. As wild as a video game, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Know Your Own Mind: A Little Book of Practical Psychology MR H. G. Wells, in Mankind in the Making, says that only thoughts which can be expressed on the meanest commonplace will ever, under present conditions, reach the minds of the majority of the English-speaking peoples. If this be so, it is a bad look-out for the popularity of Psychology. Personally, I think Mr Wells too pessimistic and in the following pages I have tried to interest the man in the street - not the man at the street-corner - in the study of a subject vital to his welfare. I have, moreover, been encouraged in my project by the words of that eminent authority, William James, who tells us that the elements of the mental machine can be clearly apprehended, and their workings easily grasped. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychologist The speaker was Mr. Johnson, junior member of the hardware firm of Millecramp C0., doing business on Reade Street, New York. It was a hot afternoon about the middle of July, and I was getting ready to start for the little cottage in Elizabeth, where I had my home with my black-eyed widow-mother and my rosy-cheeked school-girl sister. As I went into the counting-room, after adjusting my necktie and putting on my coat, Mr. Johnson handed me a slip of paper and then stood and looked at me, with his back against the desk and his thumbs in the arm-holes of his vest. I was a little startled when I saw that the paper was a check, payable to my order, for $200. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
