Download or read book Microcavities written by Alexey Kavokin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid development of microfabrication and assembly of nanostructures has opened up many opportunities to miniaturize structures that confine light, producing unusual and extremely interesting optical properties. This book addresses the large variety of optical phenomena taking place in confined solid state structures: microcavities. Realisations include planar and pillar microcavities, whispering gallery modes, and photonic crystals. The microcavities represent a unique laboratory for quantum optics and photonics. They exhibit a number of beautiful effects including lasing, superfluidity, superradiance, entanglement etc. Written by four practitioners strongly involved in experiments and theories of microcavities, it is addressed to any interested reader having a general physical background, but in particular to undergraduate and graduate students at physics faculties.

Download or read book UV Solid State Light Emitters and Detectors written by Michael S. Shur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared and visible light LEDs and photodetectors have found numerous applications and have become a truly enabling technology. The promise of solid state lighting has invigorated interest in white light LEDs. Ultraviolet LEDs and solar blind photodetectors represent the next frontier in solid state emitters and hold promise for many important applications in biology, medi cine, dentistry, solid state lighting, displays, dense data storage, and semi conductor manufacturing. One of the most important applications is in sys tems for the identification of hazardous biological agents. Compared to UV lamps, UV LEDs have lower power consumption, a longer life, compactness, and sharper spectral lines. UV LEDs can provide a variety of UV spectra and have shape and form factor flexibility and rugged ness. Using conventional phosphors, UV LEDs can generate white light with high CRI and high efficiency. If quantum cutter phosphors are developed, white light generation by UV LEDs might become even more efficient. Advances in semiconductor materials and in improved light extraction techniques led to the development of a new generation of efficient and pow erful visible high-brightness LEDs and we expect that similar improvements will be achieved in solid-state UV technology.

Download or read book Blue Laser and Light Emitting Diodes written by Akihiko Yoshikawa and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realization of the semiconductor laser diodes (LDs) operating in the blue wavelength region had been a 'dream' for a long time for the scientists working on widegap materials until just a few years ago. Quite remarkable progress has been made in the last few years the dream has come true. The first ZnSe-based blue/green LD was fabricated about four years ago and its officially reported life-time in CW operation exceeds 100 hours now; it is quickly approaching a practical use level. Further, GaN-based blue LDs have also been realized. In this way, the progress in these research fields is quite rapid. The work includes articles on bulk growth, epitaxy, doping and characterization, blue LDs and LEDs, and future prospects in both ZnSe-based and GaN-based areas.
