Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thought-provoking, challenging, compelling, and passionate are all words used to describe Psalms-Poetry for Warriors. While reading this collection of poems you'll think of it as a genre by itself, standing alone. Then, reflecting on the original Psalms (in the Bible), you realize this is a cry of the heart to which all great poets aspire. You don't have to ask to see this author's life written on the pages. In a time where spoken word simultaneously explains and perplexes, Takieaa ReyFaun has created a niche where her thoughts demand satisfaction poetically. You will experience her touching rhymes-not to be considered religious, although spiritual-on subjects as meaningful as love and as complicated as the battle between mind and spirit. Not to be taken lightly, Psalms-Poetry for Warriors seems to be ahead of its time, yet it has come to us all right on time.

Book excerpt: Over the last seven months, I have served as the chaplain for a task force made up of dedicated warriors who are a daily inspiration of devotion, selflessness and honor. The inspiration for these reflections came from the moments in prayer that I spent with these warriors prior to their missions. Often, our prayer time would start with reading a portion of one of King David's psalms. King David stands out as the definitive human warrior of the Bible who was also a man after God's own heart. His life was marked by many of the same personal battles that face our contemporary warriors. This book contains short reflections on 31 of King David's psalms (possibly to be read over the course of a month). King David's psalms help us draw nearer to God in various types of situations. The reflections are arranged not in the order that the psalms come in the Book of Psalms but arranged by type of psalm. Just like with books (non-fiction, novels, poetry, or comic books), there are different types of psalms. Each type of psalm has its own purpose, characteristics and style. Each week of readings focus on a different type of psalm to explore, understand and apply. It is the purpose of these reflections to point us not just to the great Warrior King David, but to his King and God- God himself.

Book Psalm of the Heart Fortress

Download or read book Psalm of the Heart Fortress written by Ronald Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Safe Haven for the Heart! PSALM of the Heart-Fortress is more than a collection of poems & love songs. Think of this book as the safe haven for the heart; the home for a mystical and metaphorical organ that provides testimony to our intent and feelings. Frequently the heart is a "broker of truth," and at other times the "emissary of deceit." In these pages the territory for which wars have been waged, lost and won are chronicled and explored from the inside - out. On the heart's battleground, Ron Montgomery provides a wide breath of experiences ranging from the spiritual to worldly. The message here is about the growth that occurs at the deepest most intimate levels, and provides a common understanding of metaphors and analogies that describe the individual joys and pains of living "here" in our respective skins. The author invites readers to join him on this journey as a prelude to what comes next.

The author's aim is to let his experiences stand, beliefs, and meditations on the world inspire his readers to make wise, ethical decisions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warfare exerts a magnetic power, even a terrible attraction, in its emphasis on glory, honor, and duty. In order to face the terror of war, it is necessary to face how our biblical traditions have made it attractive -- even alluring. In this book Mark Smith undertakes an extensive exploration of "poetic heroes" across a number of ancient cultures in order to understand the attitudes of those cultures toward war and warriors. Smith examines the Iliad and the Gilgamesh; Ugaritic poems commemorating Baal, Aqhat, and the Rephaim; and early biblical poetry, including the battle hymn of Judges 5 and the lament of David over Saul and Jonathan in 2 Samuel 1. Smith's Poetic Heroes analyzes the importance of heroic poetry in early Israel and its disappearance after the time of David, building on several strands of scholarship in archaeological research, poetic analysis, and cultural reconstruction.

Book Poet Warrior A Memoir

Download or read book Poet Warrior A Memoir written by Joy Harjo and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National bestseller An ALA Notable Book Three-term poet laureate Joy Harjo offers a vivid, lyrical, and inspiring call for love and justice in this contemplation of her trailblazing life. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. A musical, kaleidoscopic, and wise follow-up to Crazy Brave, Poet Warrior reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. Harjo listens to stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, and the messengers of a changing earth—owls heralding grief, resilient desert plants, and a smooth green snake curled up in surprise. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member. Moving fluidly between prose, song, and poetry, Harjo recounts a luminous journey of becoming, a spiritual map that will help us all find home. Poet Warrior sings with the jazz, blues, tenderness, and bravery that we know as distinctly Joy Harjo.

Book Theopoetry of the Psalms

Download or read book Theopoetry of the Psalms written by C.J.A. Vos and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Theopoetry of the Psalms Cas J.A. Vos explores the beauty of the Psalms and examines their meaning within the context of exegesis, homiletics and poetry. By investigating the structure, literary genre, history and theology of the Psalms he traces the ways in which they continue to be relevant to contemporary readers and to modern worship. Vos scrutinizes the Psalms as a volume of poetry and a work of art; considers hermeneutical approaches and difficulties, providing not only a verse-by-verse analysis but also a contextual history; outlines a comprehensive homiletic theory for preaching the Psalms; and concludes with a study of the Psalms in liturgy. Theopoetry of the Psalms is valuable to those Biblical scholars who wish to explore the theological and exegetical interpretation of the Psalms as well as to those readers who are interested in liturgics and practical theology for preaching and worship.

Book The Psalms as Christian Praise

Download or read book The Psalms as Christian Praise written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two respected scholars explore the heart of the Psalms Following in the style of their companion volumes, The Psalms as Christian Worship and The Psalms as Christian Lament, Bruce Waltke and James Houston now explore the depths of Christian praise. Each volume uniquely blends verse-by-verse commentary with a history of Psalms interpretation in the church from the time of the apostles to the present. Since praise is the essence of the book of Psalms, Waltke and Houston have narrowed the focus to Book IV of the Psalter (Psalms 90-106), which magnify God and proclaim him king. To give voice to the psalmist, the authors (carefully) translate and explain each psalm and summarize its theological message. This is followed by listening to the voice of godly churchmen whose comments have stood the test of time. The Psalms as Christian Praise is ideal for anyone seeking to better understand the praise of Israel as found in the Psalms and how Christians also use these Psalms in worship.
