Book Psalms and the Transformation of Stress

Download or read book Psalms and the Transformation of Stress written by Dennis D. Sylva and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Sylva has written a major book in what Clifford Geertz terms "blurred genres." By that Geertz means a study that refuses to stay slotted in a specified scholarly discipline, but reaches across such distinctions, in order to face real and complex human issues. As biblical scholarship moves out of its more positivistic modes, it is able to make contact with human dimensions of the text that "objectivist" criticism had long precluded. In this book, Sylva with painstaking research and urbane articulation reflects upon how the Psalms touch fractured human conditions in healing ways. This is no surface interpreation of scripture for the sake of "an easy religious fix", and it is no "pop psychology", because the author has thought with great steadfastness and is informed on both sides of the interface. The power of his argument is in the detail of human stress and in the effective nuance of the poetry. For his interface he employs the intriguing term "theotherapy". I have no doubt that this book will become a major resource for bringing back together text and human reality that our recent interpretative past has rent asunder. Sylva invites us to a new conversation as we "blur" our safer points of reference. Walter Brueggemann Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary This book seeks to uncover the serious and deep ways in which the Psalms speak to the human situation. Few works that I know of have sought to bring the Psalms to bear on the stresses and strains, the functions and dysfunctions of the family as has been done here. Professor Sylva endeavors to show how the Psalms create a fundamental trust in God, a trust that moves out into all other relationships starting with the family. This is something that happened to me as a child and that I came to realize only much later. In this work, The Pslams are clearly not simply a springboard to say some things about family therapy. They are the heart of this book, and it is only as they are heard in detail that one then moves or is carried by them into a more secure family relationship. I hope very much that this work will enhance the reading and appropriation of the Psalms within the family as a source of family health and strength. Patrick D. Miller Professor of Old Testament Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary Dana Sylva is Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Saint Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is the editor of "Reimaging the Death of the Lukan Jesus" (1990), and he has published articles on Old testament and New Testament exegesis.

  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Therapeutic Psalm s written by Michael Y. Obeng and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems show how God has preserved and allowed me to seek Him with all of my heart, soul, mind, will, and body. Many things have occurred in my life and by the grace and love of God, I have gained wisdom and understanding regarding my past, present, and future. There was a certain knowledge about my life that I have discovered through my love for reading and experience. I do not know what exactly is going to happen in the future, but whatever may come in my way, I will understand why. The Bible is right when it teaches that mankind is full of wickedness and how the natural man or woman seeks not God. Mankind is not perfect; therefore, mankind cannot please God with all of its terrible efforts and self-righteousness. The gospel of John, chapter 3:16 promises anyone who would trust and depend on Jesus Christ for salvation would have eternal life. Human beings have tried and are still trying to separate me from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus. They know that Jesus Christ is superior to them; therefore, they want to belittle the gospel and the person of Jesus Christ. How could anyone fight with omnipotent God and win?

Book Take Two Psalms and Call Me in the Morning

Download or read book Take Two Psalms and Call Me in the Morning written by Robert M Gullberg, M D and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-01-24 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having problem with depression, anxiety, anger, addiction, life change, fear, guilt, loneliness, PTSD, illness, stress, burnout, or moral failure? Then this book is for you. Essentially, it is a book of God's prescription from Psalms in response to life's struggles. The Great Physician wants to be your prime source of hope to help you cope with pain and difficulties. "Take two Aspirins and call me in the morning" was a popular saying used by physicians well over 100 years ago. On March 6, 1899, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), was patented by Bayer & Co. in Germany under the trade name "Aspirin". It's still one of the most highly used medications world-wide. It's active ingredient, salicin, has been used for centuries to alleviate pain and fever. Even the famous Greek physician Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.) was known to have used it. Today, about 40 billion aspirin tablets are consumed annually. There's an alternative plan for wellness besides aspirin or other medical treatments-- redirecting the old standard of therapy of our problems is the theme of this book. Take Two Psalms and call me in the morning addresses health problems that are common in clinical practice. The theme of this book is that God wants us to go to Him first, with an honest and open heart. He is the most caring Physician in our lives. He desires to work in us through our weaknesses, which can be magnified when we carry mental stress. He allows us to walk through these experiences so that we can learn to turn our faces toward Him. It is not that doctors, counseling, friends, and medications (natural or not) can't be beneficial. It's just important that we consider what God has to say about our problems. Don't leave God out of our healing equation. Many people may ask, "How can reading a Psalm help me more than medication for my problem?" To answer, we must understand first that most of the Psalms are prayers to God. The Bible teaches us that God pays as much attention to the person praying to him as the words that are read, meditated on or spoken. God wants a deep relationship with us, his adopted children. He wants to guide us and answer our prayers that we direct to him. Jesus teaches us in John 16:24, "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." One of the most exciting things about the Christian life is the knowledge that when we pray, God is listening. Our Father is delighted when we come to him with our petitions and concerns, and the book of Psalms is rich with examples of how to pray wholeheartedly.I am not a psychologist, professional counselor, or psychiatrist but I have been a practicing clinical physician and have cared for thousands of patients for over 30 years. Every day I see the daily mental and physical obstacles people face in their lives. Rather than pills, herbs, and therapy, I hope Going to God First will become the primary prescription for many of the battles you face. His prescription never fails.God has answers for your problems that will change your life for the better and help to transform you, body, mind, and spirit. He may direct you to healthcare professionals, a new diet, exercise, medication, or therapy to aid you in your journey to wellness. Your journey of good health begins with him.Psalms for Wellness is the second section of this book on pages 105-150 which will draw you closer to God. There are TWO primary parts in this section: Learning to Go to God First in the many circumstances in your life; and Knowing God Better through the Psalms. King David knew God extremely well. He ascribed to God over 100 attributes. God will reveal insights into his character from Psalms that will give you a glimpse of his glory. Use this section of the book as a source for individual or corporate prayer.

Book excerpt: In the wise and soulful tradition of teachers like Shauna Niequist and Brene Brown, therapist Aundi Kolber debuts with Try Softer, helping us align our mind, body, and soul to live the life God created for us. In a world that preaches a “try harder” gospel—just keep going, keep hustling, keep pretending we’re all fine—we’re left exhausted, overwhelmed, and so numb to our lives. If we’re honest, we’ve been overfunctioning for so long, we can’t even imagine another way. How else will things get done? How else will we survive? It doesn’t have to be this way. Aundi Kolber believes that we don’t have to white-knuckle our way through life. In her debut book, Try Softer, she’ll show us how God specifically designed our bodies and minds to work together to process our stories and work through obstacles. Through the latest psychology, practical clinical exercises, and her own personal story, Aundi equips and empowers us to connect us to our truest self and truly live. This is the “try softer” life. In Try Softer, you’ll learn how to: Know and set emotional and relational boundaries Make sense of the difficult experiences you’ve had Identify your attachment style—and how that affects your relationships today Move through emotions rather than get stuck by them Grow in self-compassion and talk back to your inner critic Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won’t be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

Book A Theology of Biblical Counseling

Download or read book A Theology of Biblical Counseling written by Heath Lambert and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the biblical counseling movement in 1970, biblical counselors have argued that counseling is a ministry of the Word, just like preaching or missions. As a ministry, counseling must be defined according to sound biblical theology rather than secular principles of psychology. For over four decades, biblical theology has been at the core of the biblical counseling movement. Leaders in biblical counseling have emphasized a commitment to teaching doctrine in their counseling courses out of the conviction that good theology leads to good counseling…and bad theology leads to bad counseling. A Theology of Biblical Counseling is a landmark new book that covers the history of the biblical counseling movement, the core convictions that underlie sound counseling, and practical wisdom for counseling today. Dr. Heath Lambert shows how biblical counseling is rooted in the Scriptures while illustrating the real challenges counselors face today through true stories from the counseling room. A substantive textbook written in accessible language, it is an ideal resource for use in training biblical counselors at colleges, seminaries, and training institutes. In each chapter, doctrine comes to life in real ministry to real people, dramatically demonstrating how theology intersects with the lives of actual counselees.
