Download or read book Styles of Thought written by David Weissman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every man and woman is located in two ways. One is stolidly physical: each human body has a unique address and trajectory. The other comes with beliefs that locate us by answering a salvo of questions: Who, what, and where am I? What are my relations to other people and things? Answers come with either of two emphases. Beliefs critical to practical life and science require that we engage familiar things or find our way in strange cities and streets. Such beliefs supply meaning and security. Ascribing significance to myself or my family, religion, or state, I tell a story that locates me within a world of purpose and value. Neighbors feel and valorize their lives as I do, so our story spreads to dominate a people or an era. One procedure—inquiry—favors reality testing and truth. The other—interpretation—uses meaning to appease vulnerability and glorify believers. Beliefs of these two kinds are sometimes joined, but they are often opposed and mutually hostile. Both philosophy and culture at large confuse these ways of thinking. Styles of Thought distinguishes and clarifies them.

Download or read book An Investigation of Teachers Questions and Tasks to Develop Reading Comprehension written by Ghazali Mustapha and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are constantly seeking ways to improve their teaching and thereby enhance the learning of their students. One method of doing this is to bring critical and creative thinking skills to the forefront of the curriculum. This has been emphasized by the Malaysian Ministry of Education via the KBSM syllabus in order to teach critical and creative thinking by considering the use of programs like Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives in classroom practice. This study demonstrates how the higher-order skills can be integrated into the secondary school reading curriculum. The main aim of the study is to investigate how teachers design reading comprehension questions (RCQs) and reading comprehension tasks (RCTs) in relation to the demands of higher-order thinking to produce students with critical minds. It focuses primarily on the use of COGAFF taxonomy (a cognitive-affective taxonomy adapted from Bloom’s and Krathwohl’s) to formulate higher-order reading questions and tasks as a means to develop critical and creative thinking skills. In a pilot study in Britain (with forty Malaysian teachers) and in the main field study in Malaysia, 150 subjects (teachers and student teachers) have yielded about one thousand RCQs and one thousand RCTs. In line with many research findings of question and task design, 91.2% of the RCQs and 83.6% of RCTs produced during the pretest were of low-order types. Subjects attended a workshop emphasizing question and task designing using the COGAFF taxonomy. Dramatically, during the posttest, 74.4% of the RCQs and 80.6% of the RCTs were transformed into higher-order inferential forms. The other major thrust of the study is to demonstrate how higher-order questions can be used to design equally higher-order tasks that can be utilized as a thinking skills approach in the teaching of reading comprehension lessons in secondary schools. Thinking tools and strategies as suggested by Beyer, Guilford, Gardner, and several others and their implications for the teaching of reading comprehension and training of teachers in Malaysia are also discussed.
Download or read book Transformation Through the Different Other written by Faustin Ntamushobora and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation Through the Different Other is the story of Faustin Ntamushobora's transformation through encounters with people of different races, tribes, worldviews, and experiences, and how God has used these experiences to transform his life into the image of Christ. The root cause of racial and tribal problems is not really the difference in color, but the human heart. However, differences in race, tribe, and worldview could widen the gap in people's hearts and cause more separation and strife. But the same heart, if transformed by the "Great Other," can shape and sharpen the heart of one's fellow human being. Ntamushobora acknowledges that community is very important for our transformation. Diversity in community, when developed with a sense of unity, can shape us into vessels that glorify the Lord by pouring into and receiving from those who are different from us. The book ends with practical ways transformation through the other can become a reality, and an invitation to believers to prepare themselves for the time when every tongue, every tribe, and every race will stand together, singing praises to the Lamb of God who was slain for the redemption of every person from every nation.

Arranged in five sections, Section 1 provides an introduction to the issue of substance misuse amongst those with psychosis. Section 2 introduces a range of integrated service models from different countries. The third section provides a practical hands-on guide to assessment and treatment. The fourth section addresses the specific treatment needs of special population groups (including young people, forensic groups, homeless people and those with HIV/AIDS). The final section examines treatment outcome studies and implications for the future. Clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, case managers, and psychiatric social workers in training and practice in clinic, hospital and community settings will find this book an essential practical resource for working with individuals (and their families) with co-occurring disorders.

Download or read book Creative Methods in Military Studies written by Alice Cree and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can creative methods offer our understanding of military power and militarised cultures? What constitutes ‘creative research’ in military studies? And, what are some of the challenges of this type of work? This edited volume brings together authors working at the cutting edge of creative research in military studies, to explore how creativity and creative practice can shed new light on often taken for granted concepts in critical military research. In twelve empirically and conceptually rich chapters, authors from a diverse range of disciplinary fields draw on theatre, model-making, songwriting, dance, spoken word, paper making, and more, to question what military research can and should look like. As a collection, the book explores topics of central concern in military studies such as militarism, military experience, and militarised cultures, as well as more practical questions around ethics, positionality, and research relationships. This path-breaking new volume considers what exactly constitutes creativity in critical military research, while offering the tools for researchers to think anew about big questions in the field.
