Download or read book Saskatchewan written by W. A. Waiser and published by Calgary : Fifth House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saskatchewan: A New History, award-winning author and historian Bill Waiser presents a fresh, entertaining account and interpretation of Saskatchewan's unique and captivating history. Writing with clarity, candor, and compassion, Waiser describes in detail his province and its people through the stimulating, often tumultuous years since joining Confederation in 1905. A gift to the province from the University of Saskatchewan, written in commemoration of the province's centennial celebrations in 2005, Saskatchewan: A New History tells, above all, the engaging stories of the people of Saskatchewan. Their wisdom, foresight, bravery, toil, and eternal optimism gave birth to one hundred years of extraordinary history. Waiser leaves no stone unturned as he records the events and stories of the people who experienced them: from the province's earliest days, when anything seemed possible; through the years of the Great Depression, when the prospect of greatness seemed all but lost; to the second half of the century, when an intense, at times bitter, debate raged over how best to govern Saskatchewan. Relying on the most up-to-date historical research available, he offers new perspectives on traditional views and tackles previously neglected, often difficult, concepts and events. "What is most striking about these images, aside from the richness of their color and the skillful use of light, are the happy, smiling faces. He could see things like no one else with a camera. He had an uncanny skill to set the scene. He caught people in everyday life and everyday activities and people wanted to have their picture taken by him." Generously illustrated with carefully selected archival images and two sixteen-page color inserts of commissioned photographs by Saskatoon's John Perret, Saskatchewan: A New History also pays a stunning visual tribute to the historical, urban, and natural splendour of Saskatchewan and its people. Includes: two 16-page color photo inserts by John Perret, 205 Black and White photographs and illustrations, 20 reference tables, 15 maps . . . and more. Book The Province of Saskatchewan Canada

Download or read book The Province of Saskatchewan Canada written by F. H. Kitto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Province of Saskatchewan, Canada: Its Development and Opportunities The political history Of Saskatchewan, therefore, dates only from 1870 with this nucleus Of government. In 1875 the territory was conceded a Lieu tenant-governor Of its own, While in 1882 the provisional districts of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Athabaska were made. In 1885 there occurred the Saskatchewan rebellion, otherwise known as the Northwest Rebellion of 1885 or the second Riel Rebellion. The encroachment of white settlers upon the lands claimed by the Indians and half-breeds, and, perhaps even more than this, the manner in which the latter were being hemmed in and restricted, led to this armed resentment. Its speedy suppression and prompt adjustment of just complaints marks the last forceful display of the red man's objection to the advance Of civilization. Book New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy

Download or read book New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy written by David McGrane and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new scholarly compilation by David P. McGrane, established and emerging trends in Saskatchewan public policy are the foundation for setting new directions for the province in the 21st century. In what direction should Saskatchewan be headed in the 21st century? To answer this question, academics from various disciplines at the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan have come together to produce New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy, the first edited book exclusively devoted to public policy in the province, with chapters discussing taxation, immigration, agriculture, urban affairs, poverty reduction, the social economy, labour, aging, Aboriginal public administration, and climate change. The authors provide an analysis and description of the current policies of the Wall government, and also look back to explore what the Romanow and Calvert governments did in these areas. The overarching theme of the book is that, despite the province's robust economic growth, significant public policy challenges remina for the Saskatchewan provincial government. The lesson is that economic growth does not magically solve entrenched societal problems and that economic prosperity will dissipate if worrisome social trends are left unchecked. While many scholarly books shy away from prescription, the authors of this book include sections in their chapters that set out new directions for policy development. As such, the book not only contains solid analysis of the present policy situation, but also offers concrete ideas for future policy makers.

Book Saskatchewan Premiers of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Saskatchewan Premiers of the Twentieth Century written by Gordon L. Barnhart and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the optimism associated with provincial status in 1905, through the trials of Depression and war, the boom times of the post-war period, and the economic vagaries of the 1980s and 1990s, the twentieth century was a time of growth and hardship, development, challenge and change, for Saskatchewan and its people. And during the century, twelve men, from a variety of political parties and from very different backgrounds, led the government of this province. The names of some--like T.C. Douglas and Roy Romanow--are still household names, while others--like Charles Dunning and WIlliam Patterson--have been all but forgotten. Yet each in his unique way, for better or for worse, helped to mould and steer the destiny of the province he governed. These are their stories.

Book Forest Prairie Edge

Download or read book Forest Prairie Edge written by Merle Massie and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2014-04-26 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saskatchewan is the anchor and epitome of the ‘prairie’ provinces, even though half of the province is covered by boreal forest. The Canadian penchant for dividing this vast country into easily-understood ‘regions’ has reduced the Saskatchewan identity to its southern prairie denominator and has distorted cultural and historical interpretations to favor the prairie south. Forest Prairie Edge is a deep-time investigation of the edge land, or ecotone, between the open prairies and boreal forest region of Saskatchewan. Ecotones are transitions from one landscape to another, where social, economic, and cultural practices of different landscapes are blended. Using place history and edge theory, Massie considers the role and importance of the edge ecotone in building a diverse social and economic past that contradicts traditional “prairie” narratives around settlement, economic development, and culture. She offers a refreshing new perspective that overturns long-held assumptions of the prairies and the Canadian west.
