Book The Folklore of the Pennsylvania Germans

Download or read book The Folklore of the Pennsylvania Germans written by John Baer Stoudt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Folklore of the Pennsylvania Germans: A Paper Read Before the Pennsylvania-German Society at the Annual Meeting, York, Pennsylvania, October 14th, 1910 The early German settlers in Pennsylvania came chiefly from the Palatinate, Baden, Swabia and Switzerland. They spoke the German dialects peculiar to the sections from which they came. From these several German dia lects there developed in the course of a few generations the Pennsylvania German, in which these several dialects are blended but in which the forceful, direct and already mixed speech of the Palatinate predominates. In the same manner the folklore of these various localities was fused, and frequently given new settings, producing in a sense a new product. But the accidents of rhyme, meter and alliterations have tended to preserve the original forms. However, rhymes, ballads, proverbs from different sec tions were frequently united, and under new conditions, and amid new surroundings were given new settings and applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Germans: A Sketch of Their History and Life, of the Mennonites, and of Side Lights From the Rosenberger Family This volume is the outgrowth of an effort on the part of the author to get from the accounts that have been preserved of the Pennsylvania Germans in general and from various other sources such light as he could on the probable history and life of some of his forbears, who disdained to keep any records of themselves or chronicles of their times. By putting into this form the more important results of his study, with some of the matter brought down into 1923, he hopes that it may be useful to others. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1993 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Englische Philologie), course: Varieties of American English, language: English, abstract: The long persistence of Pennsylvania German English for nearly two centuries in an English-speaking territory which was settled by English, Scotch-Irish and Welsh as early as by Germans , naturally brought about a certain contact between English and German language that influenced both, the generally spoken English and the specific dialect formation that languages borrowed from each other. This paper is an attempt to show in how far this language contact has caused mutual language borrowings, which were by no means restricted to vocabulary items but also extended to phonological and syntactic features, having as well influential effects on intonational patterns.
