Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION PROVEN NATURAL REMEDIES FOR COLDS, FLU and COLD SORES What are Common Colds and Flu (influenza)? Although you may get cold any time of the year, normally flu seasons start from late fall through the winter, they are caused by any of more than two hundred viruses, but most common ones are rhinoviruses, that infect the upper respiratory tract. Difference between Colds and Flu It is important to know the difference between the two. The difference mostly lies in severity and duration of the condition. There are over 100 viruses that can cause common colds, but these two viruses rhinoviruses and coronaviruses usually cause common colds. Common cold affects the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat.) It is considered only a minor viral infection of the nose and throat., Cold symptoms normally last for about a week. During the first three days that you have cold symptoms, you are contagious. This means you can pass the cold to others, so stay home and get plenty of much-needed rest. Where as, flu (commonly used for influenza) is caused solely by the viruses namely type A and type B of the three influenza viruses; type A, B and C. accompanying initially by symptoms, such as chill, high fever, aches and pains followed by severe cough, sore throat, and fatigue. These viruses enter the body through the mouth, nose, and eyes. For detail symptoms see below/ A bout of flu normally lasts one to two weeks, with severe symptoms subsiding in two to three days. However, weakness, fatigue, dry cough, and a reduced ability to exercise may continue for three to seven days. Most healthy adults become contagious the day before symptoms develop (which makes it trickier to prevent from spreading). They remain infectious for up to five to seven days after symptoms appear. Some infected persons show no symptoms, yet can spread viruses to other persons.

Download or read book Common Cold written by Ronald Eccles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common cold is unlike any other human disease because of two f- tors: firstly, it is arguably the most common human disease and, secondly, it is one of the most complex diseases because of the number of viruses that cause the familiar syndrome of sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and nasal congestion. These two factors have made a ‘cure’ for the common cold one of the most difficult scientific and clinical endeavours (a topic often d- cussed in the popular media, where comparisons are made with the ease of putting a man on the moon). The present book brings together a wide range of experts from epidemiologists to virologists and pharmacologists to look at recent advances in our knowledge of the common cold. In some respects the book is unique, as it focuses on the common cold, a syndrome so familiar to the layperson but one that receives little attention from the scientist and clinician. The common cold can be viewed from many different aspects as illustrated in Figure 1. The core knowledge for understanding the common cold must first come from virology and this is discussed in several chapters of the book. There have been major advances in this field because of the use of new methods of detecting viruses such as polymerase chain reaction techniques that have greatly aided our understanding of the epidemiology of viruses associated with common cold.

Download or read book Ah Choo written by Jennifer Ackerman and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.
