Book excerpt: Whipped, beaten and abused for the first year of his life, Dylan was eventually left tied to the gates of a dog sanctuary, with a note telling of his treatment. The fates were smiling on the little Bedlington terrier however, as the author and his family adopted him the very same day, and Dylan began his life as part of the author's Family of Rescuedogs and has been with them longer than any of their other dogs. From his appearance at a national dog show, to chasing squirrels in the forest, Dylan has led a wonderful, happy life since being rescued. Now fifteen years old, almost deaf and blind, and having survived two strokes, Dylan is still full of life, and living up to his nickname of 'The Flying Bedlington'. This is his story.

Download or read book Didge written by Natasha Kate Evans and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natasha Kate Evans’ beautifully illustrated educational book Didge is based on former West Ham and Australian footballer, Dylan James Tombides, who passed away to testicular cancer in April 2014. Natasha has written a children’s book equipped with a teaching package that aims to arm future generations with strategies to be resilient through adversity. Through Dylan's real life story teachers, parents and students will gain the necessary knowledge about testicular cancer that will enable them to be confident when taking health matters in their own hands. Didge follows the life of talented cub, Didge, who excels playing football. However, Sena, the sneaky, slithering snake enters Didge’s life unexpectedly and his life changes dramatically. Didge reflects Dylan’s story and is based on courage, persistence and love that aims to inspire children of all ages. A teaching programme for Didge is also going to be available in PDF format here: http://didgeskingdom.org/. The guide includes lesson plans for teachers, worksheets and assessment rubrics, and the activities are adopted from a range of teaching strategies to provide students with engaging and motivating learning experiences. Natasha has written Didge in Dylan’s memory to help inspire the youth of today to lead positive, meaningful lives and to never give up on achieving their hopes and dreams. It aims to teach children the importance of becoming resilient when they are faced with challenges in their lives, just like Didge, and helps teachers learn how to engage in such sensitive topics with their pupils. A hugely popular figure among his team-mates, coaches, backroom staff, supporters and opponents alike, Dylan was loved and respected throughout the football community for his talent, his smile and his spirit. Dylan was already a star. What he achieved in his 20 years was astonishing, but we knew he had potential to go on and accomplish even greater things. This book will ensure that the stars of the future have the opportunity that Dylan, tragically, was robbed of, to fulfil their potential,” comments Vice Chairman of West Ham United F.C., Karren Brady.

Book Punk Aesthetics and New Folk

Download or read book Punk Aesthetics and New Folk written by John Encarnacao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Newsom, Will Oldham (a.k.a. 'Bonnie Prince Billy'), and Devendra Banhart are perhaps the best known of a generation of independent artists who use elements of folk music in contexts that are far from traditional. These (and other) so called ’new folk’ artists challenge our notions of 'finished product' through their recordings, intrinsically guided by practices and rhetoric inherited from punk. This book traces a fractured trajectory that includes Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Bob Dylan, psych-folk of the sixties (from Vashti Bunyan to John Fahey), lo-fi and outsider recordings (from Captain Beefheart and The Residents to Jandek, Daniel Johnston and Smog), and recent experimental folk (Animal Collective, Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides) to contextualise the first substantial consideration of new folk. In the process, Encarnacao reviews the literature on folk and punk to argue that tropes of authenticity, though constructions, carry considerable power in the creation and reception of recorded works. New approaches to music require new analytical tools, and through the analysis of some 50 albums, Encarnacao introduces the categories of labyrinth, immersive and montage forms. This book makes a compelling argument for a reconsideration of popular music history that highlights the eternal compulsion for spontaneous, imperfect and performative recorded artefacts.

Book The Mafia s Good Girl

Download or read book The Mafia s Good Girl written by Aflyingwhale and published by Padnovel. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Before we get on with our business, there’s a bit of a paperwork you’d need to sign,” Damon said suddenly. He took out a piece of paper and pushed it towards Violet. “What’s this?” she asked. “A written agreement for the price of our sale,” Damon replied. He said it so calmly and so nonchalantly, like he wasn’t buying a girl’s virginity for one million dollars. Violet swallowed hard and her eyes began to glaze over the words on that paper. The agreement was pretty self-explanatory. It basically stated that she’d agree to this sale of her virginity for the aforementioned price and that their signatures would seal the deal. Damon already signed his part and hers was left blank. It was one million dollars. This was more money than she could ever see in her lifetime. One night compared to that would be minuscule. One could even argue that it was a bargain. So before she could change her mind again, Violet took the pen from Damon’s hand and signed her name on the dotted line. Right as the clock struck midnight that day, Violet Rose Carvey had just signed a deal with Damon Van Zandt, the devil in the flesh. * Warning: Mature content ahead. Enter at your own risk. *

Download or read book 21st Century Dylan written by Laurence Estanove and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as “Bob Dylan,” renewing the performance possibilities inherent in his songs, from acoustic folk, to electric rock and a late, hybrid style which even hints at so-called world music and Latin American tones. Then in 2016, his achievements outside of performance – as a songwriter – were acknowledged when he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize. Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, taking in painting, film, acting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. This volume consists of multidisciplinary essays written by cultural historians, musicologists, literary academics and film experts, including contributions by critics Christopher Ricks and Nina Goss. Together, the essays reveal Dylan's continuing artistic development and self-fashioning, as well as the making of a certain legitimized Dylan through critical and public recognition in the new millennium.

Book Girls Like Us

Download or read book Girls Like Us written by Sheila Weller and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-08 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel—except it’s all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.
