Download or read book MY LITTLE GIRL ABIGAIL written by Arthur L. Ellis, PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my Mom's journal, the daily life of a single teenage mother. Her experience with me as an infant was so much fun. My Mom soon learned that it wouldn't be easy caring for a baby all day, every day. Day one began the journey when she introduced me to her friends and family. She fixed my curly brown hair up in a bow, and put a newborn diaper on me. Mom didn't know there were so many styles of diapers to choose from in the store. It was mind-boggling. My mom said I had the cutest little ears she had ever seen. I was very heavy for mom to carry me everywhere all over school, including her books! The only time when she needed a babysitter was when she had football games and class, so basically I was with the babysitter all day. I saw right then that day care would be a necessity. I hired my parents, my granddad, and my friends to baby sit. Whenever I and the other went to practice, we created a meeting place in the classroom. If Abigail were in need care services, I would pay around $90 a week just for her to go to day care, and that doesn't include any extra food or diapers I would need to send. I also couldn't imagine having to wake up every two hours all night long to feed, change diapers, and rock Abigail back to sleep. Then again, I know I would really love my baby, so I would take care of her the proper way. Before Abigail was born, I know I was going to name her Abigail. If one day I have a boy, I am going to name him Colton. Hopefully, whomever I marry will think the same. I have decided I only want a few children, about three, but I definitely do not want to be a pregnant mom in college, taking care of more children when I am only a kid myself. I know I would have to focus on my schoolwork instead of taking care of a baby. I gave Abigail a certain time to play and then it was nap time for my little baby. She needed her rest for the next day because we would have to go to school then day care all over again.

Download or read book Onigamiising written by Linda LeGarde Grover and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before it came to be known as Duluth, the land at the western tip of Lake Superior was known to the Ojibwe as Onigamiising, “the place of the small portage.” There the Ojibwe lived in keeping with the seasons, moving among different camps for hunting and fishing, for cultivating and gathering, for harvesting wild rice and maple sugar. In Onigamiising Linda LeGarde Grover accompanies us through this cycle of the seasons, one year in a lifelong journey on the path to Mino Bimaadiziwin, the living of a good life. In fifty short essays, Grover reflects on the spiritual beliefs and everyday practices that carry the Ojibwe through the year and connect them to this northern land of rugged splendor. As the four seasons unfold—from Ziigwan (Spring) through Niibin and Dagwaagin to the silent, snowy promise of Biboon—the award-winning author writes eloquently of the landscape and the weather, work and play, ceremony and tradition and family ways, from the homey moments shared over meals to the celebrations that mark life’s great events. Now a grandmother, a Nokomis, beginning the fourth season of her life, Grover draws on a wealth of stories and knowledge accumulated over the years to evoke the Ojibwe experience of Onigamiising, past and present, for all time.
Download or read book Ester and Ruzya written by Masha Gessen and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “extraordinary family memoir,”* the National Book Award–winning author of The Future Is History reveals the story of her two grandmothers, who defied Fascism and Communism during a time when tyranny reigned. *The New York Times Book Review In the 1930s, as waves of war and persecution were crashing over Europe, two young Jewish women began separate journeys of survival. Ester Goldberg was a rebel from Bialystok, Poland, where virtually the entire Jewish community would be sent to Hitler’s concentration camps. Ruzya Solodovnik was a Russian-born intellectual who would become a high-level censor under Stalin’s regime. At war’s end, both women found themselves in Moscow. Over the years each woman had to find her way in a country that aimed to make every citizen a cog in the wheel of murder and repression. One became a hero in her children’s and grandchildren’s eyes; the other became a collaborator. With grace, candor, and meticulous research, Masha Gessen, one of the most trenchant observers of Russia and its history today, peels back the layers of time to reveal her grandmothers’ lives—and to show that neither story is quite what it seems. Praise for Masha Gessen “One of the most important activists and journalists Russia has known in a generation.”—David Remnick, The New Yorker “Masha Gessen is humbly erudite, deftly unconventional, and courageously honest.”—Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny

Download or read book Fostering Hope written by Shane Salter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What becomes of a childhood built upon repeated rejection? How can that child ever believe that someday, someone will want and love him? How can he live his life as a purposeful adult? FOSTERING HOPE is a riveting true story about the pain of rejection, the power of a childs untapped potential, and the passion in purposeful living. Born to a teenage mother whose heroin addiction shattered the hopes and dreams of her family, renowned author, lecturer, and national child advocate Shane Salter was thrust into the role of parent to his infant brother at the tender age of four. In FOSTERING HOPE, he shares his story and his strategies for moving beyond resentment to forgiveness and hope. Salters harrowing journey affirms the possibility of reclaiming the power that the past has over us. It is not too late to reestablish relationships and rebuild once-burned bridges toward dreams deferred. As we learn to better understand ourselves and the hidden prison that confines us, we learn to transform hopelessness to hope. Salters memoir truly makes hope real.

But the outpouring response from the women warriors' willingness to share the reason behind their selfless service in the US Military was beyond what I could have ever imagined.
