Book Experimentation and Rapid Prototyping in Support of Counterterrorism

Download or read book Experimentation and Rapid Prototyping in Support of Counterterrorism written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military forces currently face a nontraditional threat from insurgents and terrorists who primarily employ improvised explosive devices, and have shown a cycle of adaptation of less than 12 months to responses by U.S. forces to counter these attacks. This constantly evolving threat requires U.S. military forces to adapt and respond more rapidly with modified tactics, technologies, and/or equipment. In response to this need for new technologies, the Rapid Reaction Technology Office (RRTO) was established in 2006 to develop technologies that can mature in 6 to 18 months for purposes of counterterrorism. Although RRTO appears to be successfully fulfilling its mission, the agency seeks to understand and address barriers to and opportunities for meeting future counterterrorism needs-including the need to accelerate the transition of technologies for counterterrorism with an eye to countering emerging and anticipated threats. This book reviews RRTO approaches and provides a set of recommendations for potential improvements to help meet these needs for rapid technology development.

Book Analysis of the Transitioning Opportunity for Non Traditional Firms Under Other Transaction Authority

Download or read book Analysis of the Transitioning Opportunity for Non Traditional Firms Under Other Transaction Authority written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Government no longer dominates defense and space-based technologies as it once did. This is due to the diminishing role of Federal Government as the lead developer and owner of advance technologies. What began in the 1980s with private industry starting to outspend Federal Government in Research and Development has resulted in significant technological innovations in commercial companies. As a result, Government turned to private industry to access commercially developed technology. One procurement instrument, Other Transaction Authority for Prototype Development (OTAs), was authorized by Congress to help enable the Department of Defense (DoD) and other Government agencies to form business arrangements with traditional and non-traditional firms to develop weapon systems and related products. While this prototyping authority has provided non-traditional firms the opportunity to conduct business with DoD, there is limited information available on whether these projects have provided transition opportunities for follow-on production. This research examines the transition opportunities available to non-traditionals who have completed an OTA for prototyping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is the lifeline of national development. This handbook is a collection of chapters that provide techniques and methodologies for achieving the transfer of defense-targeted science and technology development for general industrial applications. The handbook shows how to translate theory and ideas into practical applications. Experts from national defense institutions, government laboratories, business, and industry contributed chapters to this handbook. The handbook also serves as an archival guide for nations, communities, and businesses expecting to embark upon science and technology transfer to industry. Included are several domestic and international case examples of practical innovation. Since the dawn of history, nations have engrossed themselves in developing new tools, techniques, and methodologies to protect their geographical boundaries. From the crude implements used by prehistorical people to very modern technologies, the end game has been the same. That is, to protect the homeland. Even in times of peace, efforts must be made to develop new machinery, equipment, processes, and devices targeted for the protection of the nation. The emergence of organized nations and structured communities facilitated even more innovative techniques of national defense. Evolution, revolution, and innovation have defined human existence for millennia. From the Ice Age to the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, and to the modern age, innovation, rudimentary as it may be in many cases, has determined how humans move from one stage to the next. This comprehensive handbook provides a clear guide on the nuances of initiating and actualizing innovation. Both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of innovation are covered in the handbook. Features: Uses a systems framework to zero in on science and technology transfer Focuses on leveraging technical developments in defense organizations for general societal applications Coalesces the transfer strategies collated from various sources and practical applications Represents a world-class diverse collection of science and technology development, utilization, and transfer Highlights a strategy for government, academia, and industry partnerships

Book Strategy for an Army Center for Network Science Technology and Experimentation

Download or read book Strategy for an Army Center for Network Science Technology and Experimentation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has committed to a strategy of network-centric warfare. As a result, the Army has become increasingly interested in the critical role of network science. To a significant extent, this interest was stimulated by an earlier NRC report, Network Science. To build on that book, the Army asked the NRC to conduct a study to define advanced operating models and architectures for future Army laboratories and centers focused on network science, technologies, and experimentation (NSTE). The challenges resulting from base realignment and closure (BRAC) relocations of Army research, development, and engineering resourcesâ€"as they affected the NSTE programâ€"were also to be a focus of the study. This book provides a discussion of what NSTE is needed by the Army; an examination of the NSTE currently carried out by the Army; an assessment of needed infrastructure resources for Army NSTE; and an analysis of goals, models, and alternatives for an NSTE center.

Book Automatic Tools for Designing Office Information Systems

Download or read book Automatic Tools for Designing Office Information Systems written by Barbara Pernici and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market for information technology products is rapidly changing from a manufactur er-driven market where new products were determined by the evolution of technology, to a user-driven market where users buy only products corresponding exactly to their needs and where competition is very strong. Confronted with this market situation, hardware and software producers are being obliged to adopt new strategies, and to make a large number of products available on the market in response to a variety of different needs. As a result of the multiplicity of choice available, the design of an office system which corresponds precisely to user needs is becoming an increasingly complex task. With exactly this in mind, the Commission, as early as 1985, invited submissions of projects aiming at the development of such adequate tools in its Call for Proposals for the ESPRIT Programme, in order to assist companies in the design of their office systems. This topic was recognised as being of strategic importance, considering the low level of penetration of Information Technology in European enterprises compared to the United States and Japan. Following this strategy, the project TODOS was selected and launched. This project has successfully developed tools and methods for the definition of the functional specifi cation of the office system, as well as the system architecture and user interface -results which can be of great interest for the IT community at large.
