Book excerpt: The emission of protons from targets of 6Li, Li, 12C, 27Al, 4°Ca, 51V, 9°Zr, and Pb under bombardment from 800 MeV protons was studied using the high resolution proton spectrometer at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Laboratory scattering angles of 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 20, 25, and 30° were measured, with special emphasis on the quasi-free region. Outgoing momenta corresponding to the region of pion production were examined at 11 and 15°. Absolute cross sections derived by reference to known (p, p) scattering data at 800 MeV. The quasi-free scattering has been fit with a DWIA analysis by summing over the unobserved (struck) nucleon. The systematics of proton production and the applicability of the DWIA analyses are discussed. 26 references.

Book excerpt: This project entails the investigation of deep nuclear spallation reactions induced by high-energy light particles on complex nuclei. Experimental studies involve activation of various medium- to heavy-mass targets bombarded by pi mesons, protons, and alpha particles. A prime objective is to deconvolve the cascade and evaporation steps in the reaction mechanism. Experimentally, then, particular emphasis has been placed on spallation products far from yield maxima. Irradiations have been performed predominantly at the Clinton P. Anderson Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Results from bombardments of 89Y with 190-MeV .pi.−, 800-MeV protons and 720-MeV alphas (SREL) have been nearly completed; mass-yield distributions were compared. Pion-induced neutron removal reactions have been presented for 9°Zr and 96Ru along with a serious critique of the final-state charge interaction hypothesis. Theoretical efforts are being directed at the evaporative behavior of very high-temperature nuclei as determined by the nuclear equation of state and how such behavior might become evident in spallation processes. In addition, the soft spheres model has been extended to consider the significance of nuclear transparency in high-energy reactions.

Book excerpt: One- and two-proton inclusive spectra have been measured in collisions of 800 MeV protons with C, NaF, KCl, Cu, and Pb targets. The single proton inclusive yield increases monotonically with target mass, while the two-proton yield at [theta]{sub Lab}=± 40° associated with pp quasi-elastic scatterings shows a maximum at a mass number of about 50. A model calculation reproduces the observed target mass dependence with a mean free path of ~2.5 fm for 800 MeV protons inside the nucleus.
