Book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh

Download or read book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh written by Mohammad Shaheed Hossain Chowdhury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dealt with a number of issues under the broad subject matter of protected area focusing on the policy of collaborative management as a means to augment the forest conservation activities and enhance community development in Bangladesh. Studies covered in the book emerged with the success stories of protected area co-management, both in terms of community development and biodiversity conservation. Significant level of development was noticed in the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding communities. Empowerment and improved social dignity of women participants signifies the initiation of co-management approach. The principles of participatory governance were found reasonably well reflected in legal and policy frameworks. Based on the lessons from the studies, a general metaphysical model, namely ‘Spider-web model of protected area co-management’ has been developed that can be potentially applicable in countries where local communities rely heavily on protected areas.

Book Flood Planning

  • Author : Jeroen Warner
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-02-28
  • ISBN : 0857719424
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Flood Planning written by Jeroen Warner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floods are amongst the most common and devastating natural disasters. In the wake of such an event, the pressure to initiate flood protection schemes that will provide security is enormous, and politicians promise quick solutions in the national interest. Jeroen Warner examines a number of such projects from around the world - the Middle East, South Asia and Western Europe - aimed at the prevention of serious flooding. Each provoked a level of controversy unforeseen by its initiators, with the result that schemes were shelved, were not completed, or simply failed. The author shows how such projects inevitably become politicized as different stakeholders seek to promote their interests.

Book Soft Shore Protection

    Book Details:
  • Author : Constantine Goudas
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401001359
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book Soft Shore Protection written by Constantine Goudas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.

Book The role of social protection in strengthening agrifood systems and inclusive rural transformation

Download or read book The role of social protection in strengthening agrifood systems and inclusive rural transformation written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study is one of four undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the DSI-NRF (Department of Science and Innovation and National Research Foundation) Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The purpose of these studies is to review the impact of social protection (SP) interventions on food system outcomes. The overall aim is to define a theory of change and a conceptual framework that link SP to food systems. The focus of this paper is an examination of the project titled “Enhanced Coastal Fisheries in Bangladesh” (ECOFISH-BD), within the Hilsa Fishery Management Action Plan (HFMAP). The HFMAP was implemented from 2005 in five coastal regions of Bangladesh and is a payment-for-ecosystem-services (PES) intervention that provides conditional in-kind assistance. In particular, the HFMAP provides rice to fishers in return for their compliance with fishing restrictions. ECOFISH-BD was initiated in 2014 and extends the HFMAP to include aspects of a “graduation” approach by providing adaptive co-management of the resource, training, alternative livelihood opportunities and support to ensure the inclusion of women and youth in the protected areas.

Book Construction in the Landscape

Download or read book Construction in the Landscape written by T.G. Carpenter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction in the Landscape describes the impact of construction on the land and landscape where it takes place. Geographical coverage is necessarily global to reflect the great variation both in people‘s economic and social needs and in the shortage or abundance of natural resources. Part I introduces both land resources, whether used for agriculture, human settlement or mineral extraction or conserved as scenery, wildlife habitat or for the undefined needs of future generations; and construction, its products, skills, processes and impacts on land resources. Part II describes specific forms of civil engineering - from landform adaptation, through dams and river control works, coastal construction and transport infrastructure to particular types of structure such as bridges, towers and power stations, or the layout of complete settlements. Part III deals with regional planning of construction and land use in different geographical circumstances - from fine scenery, through rural countryside to city and suburban development - and to the sort of land arrangements that may be sustainable for an increased but hopefully more civilized human population a century hence.
