Book excerpt: This thought-provoking work raises important questions about sex offender laws, drawing from personal stories, research, and data to prove the policies promote fear, destroy lives, and fail to protect children. Do sex offender laws protect children, or are they inherently unfair practices that, at their worst, promote vigilante justice? The latter, this book argues. By analyzing the social, political, historical, and cultural context surrounding the emergence of current sex offender policies and laws, the work shows how sex offenders have come to loom as greater-than-life monsters when, in many cases, that is not true at all. Looking at its subject from a fresh viewpoint, the book shares research and new analyses of data and qualitative evidence to show how sex-offender laws are not only ineffective, but engender destructive fear and anxiety. To help readers understand the impact of these laws, the author presents interviews with sex offenders and their families as they describe the day-to-day reality of living on the sex offender registry. Citing research and statistics, the book challenges the idea that sex offenders must be continually monitored and publicly identified because they are incurably predatory. Most important, the study shows that undue sex offender panic is preventing policymakers from addressing the true threats to children—poverty and growing inequality.

Book Raising Elijah

Download or read book Raising Elijah written by Sandra Steingraber and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing could be more important than the health of our children, and no one is better suited to examine the threats against it than Sandra Steingraber. Once called "a poet with a knife," she blends precise science with lyrical memoir. In Living Downstream she spoke as a biologist and cancer survivor; in Having Faith she spoke as an ecologist and expectant mother, viewing her own body as a habitat. Now she speaks as the scientist mother of two young children, enjoying and celebrating their lives while searching for ways to protect them -- and all children -- from the toxic, climate-threatened world they inhabit Each chapter of this engaging and unique book focuses on one inevitable ingredient of childhood -- everything from pizza to laundry to homework to the "Big Talk" -- and explores the underlying social, political, and ecological forces behind it. Through these everyday moments, Steingraber demonstrates how closely the private, intimate world of parenting connects to the public world of policy-making and how the ongoing environmental crisis is, fundamentally, a crisis of family life.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book They Took the Kids Last Night

Download or read book They Took the Kids Last Night written by Diane L. Redleaf and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of six families whose children were wrongly seized by child protection services vividly illustrates the constitutional balancing act where medicine, family interests, and child safety can clash. They Took the Kids Last Night shows a rarely exposed side of America's contemporary struggle to address child abuse, telling the stories of loving families who were almost destroyed by false allegations—readily accepted by caseworkers, doctors, the media, and, too often, the courts. Each of the six wrongly accused families profiled in this book faced an epic and life-changing battle when child protection caseworkers came to their homes to take their kids. In each case, a child had an injury whose cause was unknown; it could have been due to an accident, a medical condition, or abuse. Each family ultimately exonerated itself and restored its family life, but still bears scars from the experience that will never disappear. The book tells why and how the child protection system failed these families. It also examines the larger flaws in our country's child protection safety net that is supposed to sort out the innocent from the guilty in order to protect children.

Download or read book Keeping Your Child Safe written by Compass Child Protection and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child abuse takes the lives of four to seven children every day and profoundly impacts millions of families each year. As parents, we have a great responsibility to protect our children and rear them in positive, nurturing and safe environments. When our children are babies, we offer protection with crib walls and play pens. As they grow, we replace these with structure and boundaries that help our children stay secure, safe and out of danger. But protecting our children is more than just preventing them from meeting people who might harm or hurt them. It involves considering risks in the world today, understanding characteristics of people who abuse, and making changes in the way we do things, so that our families can stay safe. Keeping Your Child Safe outlines strategies parents can use to recognize and prevent child abuse. This guidebook explains what abuse is to increase your awareness and provides prevention strategies focusing on developing effective parenting skills, understanding the benefits of nonviolent discipline techniques, and offering practical ways to meet their children's emotional, physical, and developmental needs. Another goal is to empower parents to become not only practitioners of safe practices but also advocates for preventing child abuse by reaching out to other parents who may need help and support. The book is organized in four sections. The first explores types of abuse and ends with ideas to keep your child safe. The second section addresses technology safety to foster understanding about navigating potential dangers in the internet connected world in which our children are growing up, learn strategies to protect your children, and receive tips for talking with your kids about risks and precautions. The third section on bullying can help parents build a child's resiliency and teach them how to stay safe when responding to confrontations. The final section provides information to help you evaluate organizations with whom you might entrust your child's safety, be it schools, youth organizations, camps or faith-based organizations. This book is meant to open your eyes and inspire you to communicate with and educate your children so that they remain safe.
