As well as recent legislation on the protection of birds, it has also paid attention to the plight of animals subject to intensive stock farming or sent on long distance international journeys. In June 1978 the Council of Ministers decided to accede to the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes. In July 1977 the Council adopted a directive on the protection of animals during international transport, which came into effect on 1 August 1978. This directive, however, kept open various matters for later decision, and the Commission has recently sent the Council relevant proposals for consideration.
