Book Quicklet on The Blind Side by Michael Lewis

Download or read book Quicklet on The Blind Side by Michael Lewis written by Amy Holwerda and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quicklets: Learn More. Read Less. Michael Lewis was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the year 1960. He attended Princeton University and graduated with a BA in Art History. After a few years in the banking industry, Lewis left his lucrative position to write his first novel, Liar's Poker (1989) and to find work as a financial journalist. Liar's Poker was a semi-autobiographical novel focused on Lewis' experiences at Salomon Brothers. He continued the financial theme in his sophomore novel, The New, New Thing (1999) before transitioning to the sports-centered theme found in The Blind Side with his novel Moneyball (2003), which focused on the success of Billy Beane and the Oakland A's. Lewis' success has been far-reaching. As a regular contributor for such periodicals as The New Yorker, The New Republic, Slate, Conde Nast, and Vanity Fair, famed novelist Tom Wolfe called Lewis one of the two top "writers to watch" in 2010. The Blind Side is the story of high school footballer Michael Oher rising from the clutches of poverty to rise to fame as a first-pick draft choice for the NFL. When the book was first released in 2006, it quickly became a New York Times bestseller. In 2009, the book was adapted into a film. The film earned a slew of award nominations, from the Teen Choice Awards to the Academy Awards. Sandra Bullock, who portrayed the tough-as-nails Leigh Anne Tuohy, won an Oscar.

Book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than

Download or read book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than written by Thomas Sass and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's elites utilize the divide-and-conquer strategy, and with African Americans, they have found their first target. Centuries of brainwashing have instilled a superiority high in many whites and at the same time placed blacks in less-than positions. I intend to show to what extent Apartheidism and the "less-than" culture affect blacks in several different environments, such as how the criminal "justice" system is used to marginalize and criminalize blacks at rates disproportionate to their population. Even the sports world can be more problematic for blacks than for non-blacks. I will present people and events that will show the double standards society has been led to not only accept but to expect, and just how easily we seem to have been manipulated. Most, and perhaps none of which could have been so relatively easily accomplished if the "drug" of superiority did not cloud our perceptions.

Book A Fire to Win

Download or read book A Fire to Win written by John Lombardo and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fire to Win is an honest and revealing biography of Woody Hayes, a man who ranks in the pantheon of football coaches. Woody Hayes is one of the greatest football coaches in history—and one of the most fascinating. More than a brilliant coach, he was a complicated, contradictory man. The former history teacher would tout the ideals of democracy yet run his football empire as an absolute monarchy. But he had a surprisingly altruistic side, hidden from the public,. and Hayes visited local hospitals, donated his time, money, and advice, and insisted that his players graduate. More than just a standard biography, A Fire to Win explores the psychological motivations of one of the most complex of coaches. First and foremost, Woody Hayes was a coach—and his achievements are stunning. While at Ohio State, he won five national titles, and thirteen Big Ten Conference championships, made eight Rose Bowl appearances, and earned two national Coach of the Year awards. His killer instincts, honed in the navy, where he commanded a destroyer escort in the Pacific during World War II, helped him lead his teams to a 30-9 winning average. Moreover, Hayes's lifetime coaching record, 238-72-10, puts him in the first rank of college coaching immortals. No other coach has won more games in a shorter period. John Lombardo uses his extensive sports writing experience to craft an accurate portrait of one of the most complex and fascinating figures in football. Countless interviews of former players, assistant coaches, administrators, faculty, associates, and friends shape the image of Hayes and his career, which spanned the mid-1940s to the late 1970s during a tremendous period of change in American society.

Book Blitzed

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas George
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-09-05
  • ISBN : 1683581083
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Blitzed written by Thomas George and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s NFL, every team has a “win now” mentality. There’s no time for rebuilding or down years. You need to compete each and every day, or else you’re out; and that goes for the players, coaches, and front office. You either win today or you’re gone tomorrow. Because of this trend, struggling teams have forgone the training of old and slowly building from the ground up for the immediate payoff. And when it comes to gaining the interest of the fans and media, there’s one go-to decision for every struggling team: the rookie quarterback. Blitzed is an in-depth study as to the reason why teams choose to hand the keys of their franchise over to an unproven rookie. But there are multiple layers as to the odds of success for these athletes. While much has to do with their mental and physical toughness, the coaching, front office, and state of an organization all play a crucial role. In the last two NFL drafts, quarterbacks have been taken as the first two picks (Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota in 2015; Jared Goff and Carson Wentz in 2016). The face of the franchise can’t grow a beard, but is expected to lead his team on the gridiron. Covering the history of this trend with a running timeline of the 2016 NFL season and top draft picks Goff and Wentz, as well as interviews with numerous current and former quarterbacks, coaches, and executives, distinguished journalist Thomas George breaks down how teams decide on starting a rookie quarterback and why the chances of an immediate payoff are such a mixed bag.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s and 60s was a golden age for professional football. It was perhaps the toughest and roughest era for the sport, before rules were created to better protect the players, but it was also a time when legends were born. To many football fans this era remains the Glory Years of the NFL, when the stars that roamed the gridiron included the likes of Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, Jim Brown, and Raymond Berry. In Remembering the Stars of the NFL Glory Years: An Inside Look at the Golden Age of Football, Wayne Stewart tells the story of professional football in the ‘50s and ‘60s through the words of the players themselves. Chapters cover Hall of Famers on both sides of the ball, players who made a lasting impression on the game, and the toughest players on the gridiron. Stewart intertwines profiles of these iconic players with the athletes’ own memories, observations, and anecdotes, including their impressions of teammates and opponents. Two additional chapters consist of humorous quotes and the players’ thoughts on how the game has changed since their heyday. Featuring exclusive interviews with players from the 1950s and ‘60s, Remembering the Stars of the NFL Glory Years provides an inside look at this distinct time in professional football.
