Book excerpt: This volume contains abstracts of most of the significant scientific literature dealing with prostaglandins published between 1906~when certain biologically active tissue extracts first stimulated the speculation of researchers~and 1970~when the use of prostaglandins for experimental control of fertility and induction of labor had been reported from six countries. Of the more than 4000 articles now identified which were published between 1906 and 1972, approximately half had appeared in print by the end of 1970. A second volume will cover the material printed in 1971 and 1972 with special emphasis on the role of prostaglandins in reproductive physiology. The reasons for publishing this considerable compilation of data are twofold. On the one hand, prosta· glandins, a family of fatty acid derivatives first identified in human semen, have been shown to have great and varied effects on all aspects of human physiology due to activity at the cellular level as mediators in the formation of cyclic AMP. The study of prostaglandins is considered today one of the most promising fields in the biological sciences. Secondly, as is now recognized, prostaglandins play an important role in reproduction, influencing both male and female fertility. It is hoped that this volume will make the results of early prostaglandin research available to investigators throughout the world, including especially those in developing coun· tries who may not have easy access to such material.

Prostagtandin Abstracts, Volume I (Plenum Publishers, 1973) contains abstracts of all articles on prostaglandins published between 1906, when the action of these compounds was first noted, and 1970, when clinical research with these compounds was weil underway. Clinical use of prostaglandins during the 1960s proved safe but provided evidence of troublesome side effects. Du ring the 1970s, the development of new analogues, various protocols for international testing, and improved routes of administration indicates that prostaglandins still hold promise as a useful drug in the management of fertility. Research into potential contraceptive and other clinical uses of prostaglandins continues to be an exciting and expanding field of fundamental and clinical research. The citations and abstracts which are included in this volume have been selected and reproduced from POPINFORM, a computerized on-line information retrieval system which includes in its data base more than 25,000 documents on regulation of fertility. Also included as an Appendix is a bibliography (without abstracts) of 1971 -1973 material on aspects of prostaglandin research that do not involve reproduction. This bibliography was prepared by the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan and is printed here with permission.

For some time however, there has been a need for the collection in one volume of information from individual experts actively engaged in different aspects of prostaglandin research. This book is an attempt to fulfil that need. In view of the expanding interest and ever-growing accumulation of data of the various effects of prostaglandins it is hoped to revise the book and bring it up-to-date periodically. The largest section is that on reproduction, in which field progress in research and clinical applications thereof have been, and are, of great significance particularly in the area of popula tion control. This is not to decry the skill and efforts of investi gators in other aspects of prostaglandin activity nor the potential biological or therapeutic importance of their findings. In this context, what may appear to be omissions are individual sections on prostaglandin activity in the central nervous system, in the eye and as mediators of the inflammatory response. These are considered in the chapter on General Pharmacology of the Prostaglandins not because they might be considered to be of lesser impact and significance but in order to achieve a rapid publication of the book. In recent years there has been an unparalleled interest in these compounds and as a result a vast amount of research data has accumulated since the publication of my earlier book in 1972. This is no longer possible and the contents are divided into three volumes; the first one dealing with prostaglandins and reproduction was published in October 1975; the present volume dealing with chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research, to be published in April 1976 and the third book dealing with physiological, pharmacological and pathological aspects of prostaglandin research wiII be published in May 1976. The authorship represents international scientists consisting of physiolo-. gists, pharmacologists, chemists, biochemists, veterinary scientists and obstetrician gynaecologists actively engaged in different areas of prosta glandin research. An attempt has been made to provide a total coverage of advances relating to prostaglandins. For the sake of completeness and continuity, material covered in the 1972 book is either briefly summarised or reference made to that edition. In recent years there have been notable advances in the chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research and these are discussed by various authorities in the chapters that follow.

From laboratory and animal studies a large number of practical applications of prostaglandins have been identified. In some areas clinical trials have also been carried out. There is usually a long time interval between identifying practical applications of new drugs and clinical trials. Most of the information on practical applications of prostaglandins is scattered in different journals. Although a number of books dealing with prostaglandin research have been published (including some on practical applications in specific areas, e.g. reproduction) there is no single volume dealing with all areas of practical applications of these substances. This book aims at filling this gap and should be of interest to clinicians as well as to medical and basic scientists in academic institutions and in the pharmaceutical industry. In some areas, exciting potential applications of prostaglandins have been identified from basic research but clinical trials have so far not been carried out. Such areas of practical applications are covered in a separate intro ductory chapter. All contributors to the volume are scientists and clinicians actively engaged in prostaglandin research and most are recognized authorities in specific areas. The need for rapid publication in a fast-expanding field is obvious.
