Book Farewell to Prosperity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lisle A. Rose
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2014-07-30
  • ISBN : 0826273238

Download or read book Farewell to Prosperity written by Lisle A. Rose and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farewell to Prosperity is a provocative, in-depth study of the Liberal and Conservative forces that fought each other to shape American political culture and character during the nation’s most prosperous years. The tome’s central theme is the bitter struggle to fashion post–World War II society between a historic Protestant Ethic that equated free-market economics and money-making with Godliness and a new, secular Liberal temperament that emerged from the twin ordeals of depression and world war to stress social justice and security. Liberal policies and programs after 1945 proved key to the creation of mass affluence while encouraging disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and social groups to seek equal access to power. But liberalism proved a zero-sum game to millions of others who felt their sense of place and self progressively unhinged. Where it did not overturn traditional social relationships and assumptions, liberalism threatened and, in the late sixties and early seventies, fostered new forces of expression at radical odds with the mindset and customs that had previously defined the nation without much question. When the forces of liberalism overreached, the Protestant Ethic and its millions of estranged religious and economic proponents staged a massive comeback under the aegis of Ronald Reagan and a revived Republican Party. The financial hubris, miscalculations, and follies that followed ultimately created a conservative overreach from which the nation is still recovering. Post–World War II America was thus marked by what writer Salman Rushdie labeled in another context “thin-skinned years of rage-defined identity politics.” This “politics” and its meaning form the core of the narrative. Farewell to Prosperity is no partisan screed enlisting recent history to support one side or another. Although absurdity abounds, it knows no home, affecting Conservative and Liberal actors and thinkers alike.

Book A Few Thousand Dollars

Download or read book A Few Thousand Dollars written by Robert E. Friedman and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to making the U.S. economy work for everyone, by a leading advocate of asset development The majority of Americans do not have a few thousand dollars to weather an unexpected illness, job loss, or accident. Most Americans, including 80 percent of people of color, are locked out of the mainstream economy, unable to add their talents, work, and dreams, unable to share in the bounty of this economy. Without a nest egg most Americans cannot invest in their future—and the future of our country—through saving, entrepreneurship, education, and homeownership. We can—and we should—do better. Longtime leader in the field of asset-building Robert E. Friedman demonstrates how a few simple policy changes would address wealth inequality—and build a better economy and a stronger country for us all. In six sharp, compelling chapters, accented by sixteen original black-and-white illustrations by Rohan Eason that present the realities of income and asset inequality and explain the needed policy interventions, Friedman addresses savings, business, education, home, and prosperity to articulate a vision for making inclusive investments without spending an additional dollar, just by transforming tax subsidies for the wealthy few into seeds for prosperity for everyone. This is an investment with a huge return: the redemption of the American promise of prosperity for all.

Book Ontopower

  • Author : Brian Massumi
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2015-07-23
  • ISBN : 0822375192
  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book Ontopower written by Brian Massumi and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color coded terror alerts, invasion, drone war, rampant surveillance: all manifestations of the type of new power Brian Massumi theorizes in Ontopower. Through an in-depth examination of the War on Terror and the culture of crisis, Massumi identifies the emergence of preemption, which he characterizes as the operative logic of our time. Security threats, regardless of the existence of credible intelligence, are now felt into reality. Whereas nations once waited for a clear and present danger to emerge before using force, a threat's felt reality now demands launching a preemptive strike. Power refocuses on what may emerge, as that potential presents itself to feeling. This affective logic of potential washes back from the war front to become the dominant mode of power on the home front as well. This is ontopower—the mode of power embodying the logic of preemption across the full spectrum of force, from the “hard” (military intervention) to the "soft" (surveillance). With Ontopower, Massumi provides an original theory of power that explains not only current practices of war but the culture of insecurity permeating our contemporary neoliberal condition.

Book Prosperity

Download or read book Prosperity written by Bob Davis and published by Crown Business. This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prosperity tells stories about how the lives of the middle class are changing for the better. These are the people who are still being wrongly consigned by prophets of doom and gloom to the sidelines of the new high-tech economy." "These stories bring together the three trends that will be the basis for a new, middle-class prosperity: our $2 trillion investment in computer and communications technology will finally pay off in faster productivity growth, a more rapidly growing economy, and rising living standards; community colleges are helping millions of Americans move from $7-an-hour jobs to $17-an-hour jobs. This unheralded change in U.S. education will help reverse the forces that have widened the chasm between more-educated and less-educated workers; and globalization - much maligned by pundits on the left and the right - will create new and better jobs by U.S. companies that export to developing countries and by foreign companies that build plants and offices in the United States."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
