Book excerpt: Se trata de un estudio de los suelos rojos españoles con el fin de conocer sus propiedades físico-químicas, tratar de aclarar el proceso de su formación y encuadrarlos dentro de una clasificación racional. En una amplia introducción se recoge el estado actual de los conocimientos sobre los suelos rojos del área mediterránea, en la que se observa la discrepancia de opiniones de diversos investigadores, lo que condujo a un cierto confusionismo en el conocimiento de estos suelos. Seguidamente se indica la forma de selección y toma de muestras y se hace un resumen de la metodología seguida en las 23 determinaciones que se practicaron en cada muestra. En el capítulo "Perfiles"figura la descripción de los 18 perfiles estudiados, considerados como representativos de los suelos rojos españoles, así como los resultados analíticos de las 68 muestras analizadas y los comentarios que pudieron hacerse en base a las observaciones de campo y a los resultados analíticos de cada perfil. La discusión se divide en cuatro partes fundamentales: 1)factores formadores y morfologíau de los suelos rojos; 2)propiedades químicas y físico-químicasu; 3)génesis, y 4)clasificación de los suelos rojos españoles. El estudio detallado de estos cuatro apartes permite deducir 15 conclusiones, de entre las cuales extractamos las más importantes: a)Los suelos rojos se presentan por la amplia geografía española con una extensa variedad en los caracteres morfológicos y físico-químicos. b)No existe estrecha dependencia entre los suelos rojos y la naturaleza de los materiales geológicos subyacentes, siendo también muy variables los caracteres fisiográficos. c)Los suelos rojos son en su mayoría formaciones paleoedáficas monocíclicas. Todos tienen horizontes B de carácter textural, sin que en su formación se produjera iluviación de arcilla, pues están desprovistos de horizonte Ae ó A2. d)El proceso formador de los suelos rojos lleva consigo como etapas previas la descarbonatación de los horizontes A y B seguidas de la argilización del horizonte B y la rubefacción del mismo. Estos dos últimos procesos pueden ser simultáneos. e)Los contenidos en hierro, tanto libre como total, no son significativos ni tienen relación con el color. Las relaciones entre hierro libre y el hierro total tienen una ligera significación, siendo ésta mucho mayor al relacionar el hierro libre con el contenido de arcilla. El color rojo se debe a formas de hierro pobres en agua, en estado psudocristalino y de tamaño submicroscópico. f) Se propone la división de los suelos rojos en saturados y desaturados, según que el grado de saturación sea superior o inferior al 50%. Los primeros se subdividen en Líticos, Petrocálcicos, Rególicos, Vérticos y Calcosilíceos, y los segundos, en Oligotróficos y Mesotróficos. Por último, se presenta una amiplia bibliografía y las fotografías en color de los perfiles más característicos y de los cortes delgados de los horizontes Bt de cuatro perfiles, con nicoles paralelos y cruzados, así como las fotografías con microscopio electrónico de cuatro muestras correspondientes a otros tantos perfiles tomadas antes y después de extraerles el hierro libre por el método de Deb.

In the field of primatology. one studies many things. but rarely do those things (genetics. behavior. population dynamics) get called out as studies in fragmentation. For some reason "fragmentation primatologists" fear that our work is somehow "not as good" as those who study in continuous habitat. We worry that perhaps our subjects are not demonstrating as robust behaviors as they "should" given fragmented or disturbed habitat conditions.
