Book excerpt: On their way to meet up with an ancient dragon, Guntharr, Taya, Firebane and the others encounter a group of elves taken captive by a small army of barbarians. Concerned for their possible allies, Guntharr breaks away from the group to try and discover what fate would befall them. Firebane, now in charge, must lead the others without the help of Rift, through a dangerous dungeon in order to recover a coveted treasure that their dragon host requires to secure an audience with him. Compelled by a longing to return home and a fear that his life is nearing an end, Rift journeys back to Wolf Valley to spend his last days among his family. His warm welcome is cut short when Rift discovers that his oldest son has been missing for weeks, presumably out searching for him. As a result, his youngest has been trying to hold things together with the council of wolves and Rift’s return sparks a controversy which ends with his arrest and subsequent trial. As Rift stands to defend himself, Raskin risks his life and makes a historic appearance in the middle of wolf territory. Alerted to the fact that Guntharr and the others are in deep trouble, Rift is forced to accept banishment from Wolf Valley. Recruiting his family, Rift follows his feathered friend into the wilderness to a long forgotten fortress. There, Firebane and the others are lured into a trap and captured by none other than Guntharr who is now under the control of an evil enchantress. Mastering the power of the green gem, the enchantress, at the request of her sister Naranda, returns a certain wizard back to life. With Guntharr now under the sway of the enchantress, Firebane’s faith and courage is taxed to the limit. Not only must he battle the persuasive power of the enchantress, but hope against all hope that he can find a way to free them all and recover the next piece to the Talisman of Alterian before all is lost.

With the Guardian Corps destroyed, nothing can stop the forces of darkness from overrunning Teradandra. Guntharr, Firebane and the other’s attempt at locating the last piece of the talisman has stalled. Rift and Raskin have returned home, their adventuring and fighting days behind them. Taya alone still has hope and a good guess where to go next. Striking out on her own, Taya sets out to prove to herself and the others that she is ready to take on the title of Silverwood’s Heir. Traveling back to her and Guntharr’s original home, Taya encounters the unlikeliest of allies in the form of a young red dragon. But even the dragon is not cunning enough for Wilstrom and his conspirators as they intercept Taya just as she recovers the final gem. Imprisoned and alone, Taya has only one hope left, faith that her companions can find her. But how will they do that, when even she does not know where Wilstrom has taken her. With the looming Talicron threat, time is not on their side. For one member of the group, time is up.

Events spiral out of control as Raskin is captured along with Guntharr, Taya, Firebane, and Farrian. The alpha hawk lords launch an all-out attack on the unsuspecting battle wolves of Clan Firepack, but the alphas are not going to it alone. Alpha Plass has secretly enlisted the aid of the sorceress, Naranda. Her role is to guarantee the war and see to it that the rise of Silverwood never happens. Plass seals the deal by turning over the red gem of power. Its discovery coincides with the alphas’ orchestrated extermination of a certain caste of hawk lords. Tensions rise as Raskin discovers the truth about the events leading up to his rescue by Silverwood’s princess. As he prepares for the ultimate fate, the sudden appearance of an impossible hawk lord gives him the strength to forgive himself and a new courage to move forward. Ghosts from Rift’s past surface as former students seek to settle a score with the old battle wolf. To save his friends and lay the lingering guilt he has carried to rest, Rift agrees to a fight to the death with the four rogue battle wolves. Book And Not Make Dreams Your Master

Download or read book And Not Make Dreams Your Master written by Stephen Goldin and published by Parsina Press. This book was released on 2011-05-30 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the near future, Dream broadcasting has become the latest entertainment medium. Wearing a Dreamcap while you sleep enables broadcasters to send Dreams directly into your unconscious mind, giving you an entertainment experience as intensely real as though you'd been there yourself. Wayne Corrigan is a performer at Dramatic Dreams, one of the smaller broadcast studios in the Los Angeles area. Janet Meyers, the lady Wayne's in love with but is too shy to tell her, is another. A third colleague is Vince Rondel, a genius of the art, a so-called Master Dreamer with enough imagination to create and populate entire worlds within their minds and project them to the audience. Vince is the superstar of the studio, though he doesn't seem pretentious about it. He does have other problems, though, like a domineering mother who's a religious zealot. When a mysterious malfunction occurs, Wayne is called on to enter a Dream started by Vince. Once inside, he finds a situation run wild and people enslaved by Vince, who seems bent on self-destruction. Now, tens of thousands of people--including Janet, who's in the audience that night--are in danger of dying or going insane unless Wayne can find some way to wrest control of the Dream away from Vince. And Not Make Dreams Your Master is a wild, inventive ride through the nightmare mind of a madman.

Download or read book The Story of China written by Michael Wood and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single volume history of China, offering a look into the past of the global superpower and its significance today. Michael Wood has travelled the length and breadth of China, the world’s oldest civilization and longest lasting state, to tell a thrilling story of intense drama, fabulous creativity, and deep humanity that stretches back thousands of years. After a century and a half of foreign invasion, civil war, and revolution, China has once again returned to center stage as a global superpower and the world’s second largest economy. But how did it become so dominant? Wood argues that in order to comprehend the great significance of China today, we must begin with its history. The Story of China takes a fresh look at the Middle Kingdom in the light of the recent massive changes inside the country. Taking into account exciting new archeological discoveries, the book begins with China’s prehistory—the early dynasties, the origins of the Chinese state, and the roots of Chinese culture in the age of Confucius. Wood looks at particular periods and themes that are now being reevaluated by historians, such as the renaissance of the Song with its brilliant scientific discoveries. He paints a vibrant picture of the Qing Empire in the 18th century, just before the European impact, a time when China’s rich and diverse culture was at its height. Then, Wood explores the encounter with the West, the Opium Wars, the clashes with the British, and the extraordinarily rich debates in the late 19th century that pushed China along the path to modernity. Finally, he provides a clear up-to-date account of post-1949 China, including revelations about the 1989 crisis based on newly leaked inside documents, and fresh insights into the new order of President Xi Jinping. All woven together with landscape history and the author’s own travel journals, The Story of China is the indispensable book about the most intriguing and powerful country on the world stage today.

Book excerpt: Mangkunagara I (1726-95) was one of the most flamboyant figures of 18th-century Java. A charismatic rebel from 1740 to 1757 and one of the foremost military commanders of his age, he won the loyalty of many followers. He was also a devout Muslim of the Mystic Synthesis style, a devotee of Javanese culture and a lover of beautiful women and Dutch gin. His enemies—the Surakarta court, his uncle the rebel and later Sultan Mangkubumi of Yogyakarta and the Dutch East India Company—were unable to subdue him, even when they united against him. In 1757 he settled as a semi-independent prince in Surakarta, pursuing his objective of as much independence as possible by means other than war, a frustrating time for a man who was a fighter to his fingertips. Professor Ricklefs here employs an extraordinary range of sources in Dutch and Javanese—among them Mangkunagara I’s voluminous autobiographical account of his years at war, the earliest autobiography in Javanese so far known—to bring this important figure to life. As he does so, our understanding of Java’s devastating civil war of the mid-18th century is transformed and much light is shed on Islam and culture in Java.
