Book Prophecies of Leviathan

Download or read book Prophecies of Leviathan written by Peter Szendy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Melville is not only reading. Reading Melville means being already engaged in the abyssal process of reading reading. Reading what reading is and what reading does. With Melville, Prophecies of Leviathan argues that reading, beyond its apparent linearity, is essentially prophetic, not only because Moby Dick, for example, may appear to be full of unexpected prophecies (Ishmael seems to foretell a "Grand Contested Election for the Presidency of the United States" followed by a "bloody battle in Afghanistan") but also, and more deeply, because reading itself is a prophetic experience that Melville captured in a unique way. Reading, according to Melville, might just be the prophecy of the text to come. This apparently tautological view has great consequences for the theory of literature and its relation to politics. As Szendy suggests, the beheading of Melville's "Leviathan" (which, Ishmael says, "is the text") should be read against Hobbes's sovereign body politic. Szendy's reading of Melville urges us to revisit Jacques Derrida's all too famous sentence: "There is no hors-texte." And it also urges us-as the preface to this English edition makes clear-to reflect on the (Christian) categories that we apply to the text: its life, death, and, above all, afterlife or suicide. The infinite finitude of the text: that is what reading is about. In his brilliant and thorough afterword, Gil Anidjar situates Prophecies of Leviathan among Szendy's other works and shows how the seemingly tautological self-prophecy really announces a new "ipsology," a "pluralization of the self" through a "narcissism of the other thing."

Book Understanding Leviathan

Download or read book Understanding Leviathan written by Richard Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Leviathan is a study of the connection between a seven-headed sea beast with ten horns detailed in the Old Testament and the last book of the Bible, Revelation. You will study clues that leads to unraveling the mystery behind what our future holds and how Leviathan is used to help others better understand prophecy. For the first time Leviathan, a metaphor, can be understood. Leviathan is not an actual dinosaur, dragon, or animal, but in reality it represents kings and kingdoms, power and evil. Richard Lee has studied the book of The Revelation for over forty years and draws upon his in-depth knowledge of the last book in the Bible to relate modern day events with the word of the Holy Scriptures, ultimately demonstrating how Leviathan represents kingdoms that are literal and used against the Jewish nation. For those who seek answers to many of the most complex spiritual questions, Lee teaches specifically about the truth of Leviathan and the harlot who rides the heads of this sea beast, while also unveiling: The kingdom that returns to dominate the world The obscurity of the last two evil kings in Revelation The true meaning behind the number "666" The ten horns that troubled the prophet Daniel The destruction of world trade and the rise of a false religion. Understanding Leviathan and its careful examination of Revelation provides a greater understanding of the Biblical Scriptures and awakens all spiritual seekers to the sobering thought that when the end comes, being prepared, saved, and enduring in faith is the final test before God reclaims the earth.

Book excerpt: Greek and Roman tales of deities and demigods, what we call myths, are twisted versions of true history: Zeus is Satan, the Titans are the sons of god who came in to the daughters of man, and the heroes of the Golden Age are the mighty men of old-the Nephilim. If you were brought up in church, there's a good chance you were taught that the pagan gods were imaginary. But God Himself calls them gods. Not only that, He's judged them, found them wanting, and proclaimed a sentence of death on these rebels. But they're not dead yet. They're angry, and they're coming back.In Last Clash of the Titans, you'll discover:¿The Titans, the old gods of the Greeks, are the Watchers, the angelic sons of God who created the monstrous Nephilim by taking human women as wives¿The Nephilim, later called Rephaim, were the heroes and demigods of the Greeks¿Satan is lord of the Rephaim-and he'll lead them in an end times army against Israel¿The pagan Amorites worshiped the Rephaim spirits and believed they were ancestors of their kings¿The pagan prophet Balaam foretold the final destruction of the Nephilim by the Messiah¿Ezekiel's prophecy of Gog and Magog tells us when and where they'll be destroyed¿Gog won't be human, Magog is not Russia, and their war ends with the Battle of Armageddon¿The spirit of primordial chaos, Leviathan, will return from the abyss-as the AntichristAs Baudelaire wrote, "The finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist." Recent research shows that nearly 60% of American Christians have fallen for that lie.Zeus, Hercules, the Olympians, and the Titans are real. They hate us, they want to kill us, and they're coming back.Get ready.

Book Political Realism in Apocalyptic Times

Download or read book Political Realism in Apocalyptic Times written by Alison McQueen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From climate change to nuclear war to the rise of demagogic populists, our world is shaped by doomsday expectations. In this path-breaking book, Alison McQueen shows why three of history's greatest political realists feared apocalyptic politics. Niccol- Machiavelli in the midst of Italy's vicious power struggles, Thomas Hobbes during England's bloody civil war, and Hans Morgenthau at the dawn of the thermonuclear age all saw the temptation to prophesy the end of days. Each engaged in subtle and surprising strategies to oppose apocalypticism, from using its own rhetoric to neutralize its worst effects to insisting on a clear-eyed, tragic acceptance of the human condition. Scholarly yet accessible, this book is at once an ambitious contribution to the history of political thought and a work that speaks to our times.

Book The Dream of the Great American Novel

Download or read book The Dream of the Great American Novel written by Lawrence Buell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Magisterial . . . make[s] you suddenly see new things in familiar books . . . brilliant analyses of a dozen or so front-runners in the Great American Novel sweepstakes.” —Michael Dirda, Virginia Quarterly Review The idea of “the great American novel” continues to thrive almost as vigorously as in its nineteenth-century heyday, defying more than 150 years of attempts to dismiss it as amateurish or obsolete. In this landmark book, the first in many years to take in the whole sweep of national fiction, Lawrence Buell reanimates this supposedly antiquated idea, demonstrating that its history is a key to the dynamics of national literature and national identity itself. The dream of the G.A.N., as Henry James nicknamed it, crystallized soon after the Civil War. In fresh, in-depth readings of selected contenders from the 1850s onward in conversation with hundreds of other novels, Buell delineates four “scripts” for G.A.N. candidates and their themes, illustrated by such titles as The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, Invisible Man, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Beloved, Moby-Dick, and Gravity’s Rainbow—works dwelling on topics from self-invention to the promise and pitfalls of democracy. The canvas of the great American novel is in constant motion, reflecting revolutions in fictional fashion, the changing face of authorship, and the inseparability of high culture from popular. As Buell reveals, the elusive G.A.N. showcases the myth of the United States as a nation perpetually under construction. “Engaging and provocative . . . ultimately affirms the importance of literature to a nation’s sense of itself.” —Sarah Graham, Times Literary Supplement “Rich in critical insight . . . Buell wonders if the GAN isn’t stirring again in surprising new developments in science fiction. An impressively ambitious literary survey.” —Booklist (starred review)
