Book Voyage to an Unknown Land

Download or read book Voyage to an Unknown Land written by Consuelo De Aerenlund and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear understanding of the concept of health plays a key role in defining what health care should comprise and in developing adequate strategies for overcoming the current "health care crisis." This volume is the result of an international and interdisciplinary cooperation between medicine and philosophy on the current debate on the concept of health. Besides offering a critical analysis of the WHO definition and a review of both ancient and contemporary conceptions of health, the cooperative effort of physicians and philosophers presented in this book works through the challenges which any definition of health faces, if it is to be both truly personalist, and at the same time operational. The overall purpose of this book is to capture the essentials of human health and to propose the outlines for a personalist understanding of this concept, i.e., a conception that does justice to the personal nature of human beings by introducing dimensions that are essential to personal life and well-being, such as the realms of rationality, affectivity and freedom, the realms of meaning, values, morality, and spirituality, the realms of social and interpersonal relations. To grasp the uniqueness of the human person is not yet to grasp the specific nature of personal health. But it is certainly a first step, and it becomes evident that every theory of human health presupposes a theory of the person. Accordingly, the debate presented in this book is no less a debate about the nature of the human person than it is a debate about the nature of health. The investigations offered in this volume intend to provide an impetus for new conceptions of personhood and human health. The phenomenological approach has the advantage of advocating a systematic conception of the total person which combines surface experiences (subjective experiences of well-being) with deeper dimensions of the person (value and being). An adequate conception of the human person has enormous implications not only for our understanding of what constitutes the health and well-being of the person, but also for our conception of what health care should comprise. Hence, answering the philosophical questions, such as those raised in this volume about health, is crucial for the solution of political problems such as how to legislate health care policy.

My self-control goes out the window after midnight. And when a beautiful girl comes into my house whining that she didn’t get a proper kiss, I feel obligated to rectify that.”

Book Your Best Friend s Guide to Cash

Download or read book Your Best Friend s Guide to Cash written by Kara Gammell and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might be on 'the right side of 40', and yet, financially you feel about fourteen. By now, you should be rolling in the dough, but it feels like you're drowning in debt. This isn't how being "a grown up" was supposed to be. How will you ever get on the property ladder if you can't even make more than the minimum payment on your credit card? Will you live like a pauper when you're old and grey because student loans and sky-high rents mean you can't afford to pay into a pension? One thing is for sure, money may not buy you happiness, but from where you're standing, it sure could buy you a few things that would put a smile on your face - a flat would be nice come to think of it. So what are you going to do about it? Do you want to spend your life in financial turmoil? When Kara Gammell first came to the UK from her native Canada at 23, financially, she was a disaster. After five years of fun at uni, she couldn't manage being paid monthly, certainly didn't know what an overdraft was (or why the cashpoint swallowed her debit card) and at one point was so skint she actually cashed in her Oyster card for the £2 deposit. But Kara took control of her money and turned her cash crisis around. By the age of 28, she was out of an overdraft, had become an award-winning financial journalist and became a homeowner (independent of the bank of mum and dad to boot) - but most importantly, she was no longer living life on the breadline or on the brink of a financial disaster. In this practical and witty guide, Kara explains how whether you are struggling to make ends meet or trying to buy your first home - taking control of your finances can change your life. With clear and straightforward advice on everything from cutting credit card debt to getting more from your money at the supermarket, Kara shares her tried and tested tips so that you have all you need to get it right - the first time. Kara soon learned from her mistakes, and now you can too.

Book The Hindus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wendy Doniger
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2010-09-30
  • ISBN : 0199593345
  • Pages : 801 pages

Download or read book The Hindus written by Wendy Doniger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets karma, dharma, to name just two arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism - its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness - lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers - many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts - have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.
