Book excerpt: "Mass spectrograph analysis of minute quantities of radioactive elements produced in bombarded targets is aided by utilizing the beta and gamma radiations from the isotopes for their detection. Success depends on the efficiency of production of positive ions of the element in the mass spectrograph and the length of the half-lives compared to the time required for chemical extraction and mass sseparation. Using this technique the neutron deficient mass spectra of strontium, indium, and gallium were surveyed, extracting th~se. ~~om targets of rubidium chloride, cadmium and zinc, respectively, activated in the proton beam of the McGill cyclotron. Two new strontium isotopes were discovered, with mass numbers 82 and 83, and half-lives measuring 28 days and 33 hours, respectively. Maximum radiation energies were measured by an absorption method. Mass spectra containing all the known neutron deficient isotopes of indium were obtained, and by isolating In107 its half-life of 30 minutes (approx.) was confirmed. The upper limit for half-lives of any lower than 107 was set at 15 minutes. No new gallium isotopes were found, but an upper limit of 30 minutes set for the half-lives of all with mass numbers lower than 66, which includes that for Ga64 reported elsewhere as 48 minutes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beta decay endpoint energy measurements of the neutron deficient cesium isotopes were done using an energy spectrum shape fitting technique. This was a departure from the typical method of endpoint energy analysis, the Fermi-Kurie plot. A discussion of the shape fitting procedure and its improved features are discussed. These beta endpoint measurements have led to total decay energies (Q/sub EC/) of the neutron deficient 119 123Cs isotopes. The total decay energies of /sup 122m/Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 6.95 +- 0.25 MeV) and 119Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 6.26 +- 0.29 MeV) were new measurements. The total decay energies of 123Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 4.05 +- 0.18 MeV), /sup 122g/Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 7.05 +- 0.18 MeV), 121Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 5.21 +- 0.22 MeV), and 12°Cs (Q/sub EC/ = 7.38 +- 0.23 MeV) were measurements with significantly improved uncertainties as compared to the literature. Further, a combination of the energy levels derived from previous literature gamma-gamma coincident measurements and the experimental beta-coincident gamma decay energies has supported an improved level scheme for 121Xe and the proposal of three new energy levels in 119Xe. Comparison of the experimental cesium mass excesses (determined with our Q/sub EC/ values and known xenon mass excesses) with both the literature and theoretical predicted values showed general agreement except for 12°Cs. Possible explanations for this deviation are discussed.

Following the tradition established by earlier conferences in the series, it was attended by 280 participants from 24 countries. A total of 28 invited talks were delivered at the conference. These talks, which are presented in this volume, covered a wide range of topics in atomic physics in a broad sense. They extend from very basic problems (e.g., the interpretation of quantum mechanics in light of Bell's theorem and the feasibility of relativistic many-body calculations) to applied problems (e.g., laser detection of trace elements and spectroscopy of chemisorbed molecules). Professor M.Ya. Amusia was unable to attend the conference but his invited paper is included here. Professor V.S. Letokhov presented a talk entitled "Prospects of Laser Detection of Very Rare Isotopes, but was unable to provide a manuscript. At the conference, 175 post ers were presented. Abstracts have been published in a separate volume. It is very much appreciated that all the 1981 Nobel laureates, Nicolaas Bloembergen, Arthur Schawlow and Kai Siegbahn, were able to attend and deliver their invited talks. Professor Schawlow summed up the conference and this too is presented here. The con ference also benefited considerably from the presence of Professor 1.1. Rabi, who gave a much appreciated talk at the conference dinner. As this talk was given without a manuscript, it could unfortunately not be included here.
