Book Properties of a Retrogressed and Re Aged 7075 Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book Properties of a Retrogressed and Re Aged 7075 Aluminum Alloy written by E. S. Tankins and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retrogression and Re-aging (RRA) is a new thermal process introduced for the purpose of enhancing corrosion resistance of 7075-T651 aluminum alloy while maintaining its T6 strength. In this study a 7075 material so treated was investigated for its mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. Results indicated that the RRA treated 7075 was significantly better than the T6 temper in resistance to stress corrosion cracking and exfoliation corrosion. The loss in strength from RRA treatment was minimal. Electron microscopy of the fractured surface showed a distinct difference in the fracture mode when compared to the T6 temper condition. Tests results indicated that the RRA heat treatment resulted in fatigue and fracture toughness properties superior to the 7075-T651. Keywords: SEM fractography, Differential scanning colorimetry, Hardness, Conductivity, Fracture toughness, Fatigue, and Crack propagation.

Book Analysis of Thermal Treatments for the 7075 7091 Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Analysis of Thermal Treatments for the 7075 7091 Aluminum Alloys written by E. S. Tankins and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retrogression and re-aging (RRA) is a thermal treatment applied to 7000 series aluminum alloys in order to improve their stress corrosion cracking resistance while maintaining the peak strength of the T-6 temper. In the present work, 7075 and 7091 were retrogressed at temperatures between 160 C and 240 C and aged for 24 hours at 120 C. The hardness and conductivity data obtained were compared to and contrasted with the alloy's normal aging profile. Results indicate that RRA treatment is effective at retrogression temperatures lower than previously reported and that retrogression appears to be kinetically dominated (i.e. data fits a first order dissolution model). The aforementioned results should enable the RRA process to be expanded to thick plates.

Book Fracture Mechanics and Acoustic Emission Response of Retrogression Reaged 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Acoustic Emission Response of Retrogression Reaged 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy written by K. I. McRae and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress corrosion cracking of high strength, structural aluminum alloys, such as 7075 in the T6 temper, is a commonly encountered problem. Recently, an alternative heat treatment, known as retrogression and reaging, has been proposed. It is purported that this heat treatment imparts a stress corrosion cracking resistance for 7075-T6 equal to that of the T73 temper, with only a negligible decrease in yield strength. In order to fully characterize this heat treatment, the plane strain fracture toughness, KIc, and the resistance to fatigue crack growth were compared to those of the same alloy in the normal T6 condition. Small increases in each of these mechanical properties were detected. The acoustic emission (AE) response to crack growth during testing was also investigated. It was determined that the number of AE signals is proportional to the crack length or total crack area. This response is consistent with proposed mechanisms for acoustic emission in this material. It is further noted that no significant difference exists in the AE response of 7075-T6 in the normal and retrogression-reaged conditions. (Author).

Book Aluminium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminium Alloys written by Subbarayan Sivasankaran and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major issue of energy saving and conservation of the environment in the world is being emphasized to us to concentrate on lightweight materials in which aluminium alloys are contributing more in applications in the twenty-first century. Aluminium and its related materials possess lighter weight, considerable strength, more corrosion resistance and ductility. Especially from the past one decade, the use of aluminium alloys is increasing in construction field, transportation industries, packaging purposes, automotive, defence, aircraft and electrical sectors. Around 85% is being used in the form of wrought products, which replace the use of cast iron. Further, the major features of aluminium alloy are recyclability and its abundant availability in the world. In general, aluminium and its related materials are being processed via casting, drawing, forging, rolling, extrusion, welding, powder metallurgy process, etc. To improve the physical and mechanical properties, scientists are doing more research and adding some second-phase particles in to it called composites in addition to heat treatment. Therefore, to explore more in this field, the present book has been aimed and focused to bridge all scientists who are working in this field. The main objective of the present book is to focus on aluminium, its alloys and its composites, which include, but are not limited to, the various processing routes and characterization techniques in both macro- and nano-levels.
