This user manual includes descriptions of the finite element method, equations, & solving schemes used in PVAST analyses; the finite elements offered for propeller modelling and the modelling options available in the program; program organization & operation; features & usage of the program for pre- & post-processing; and how to use PVAST effectively & efficiently. Appendices include additional information on input data, load generation, plotting, generation of models for the fluid surrounding the blade, blade geometry generation, the geometry of marine propellers, and generation of air channel models.

Book Deflection Stress and Vibration Analysis of Rotating Propellers Using Holography

Download or read book Deflection Stress and Vibration Analysis of Rotating Propellers Using Holography written by Jerome P. Sikora and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new holographic technique has been developed which allows measurement of the deflection of propeller blades while rotating. The technique requires that an axially-symmetric wavefront be directed onto both the propeller blade and a holographic plate rotating with the propeller. Some deflection results for a propeller rotating in air are presented and the technique has been shown to be feasible for propellers rotating in water.

Book Stress Analysis of Rotating Propellers Subject to Forced Excitations

Download or read book Stress Analysis of Rotating Propellers Subject to Forced Excitations written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbine blades experience vibrations due to the flow disturbances. These vibrations are the leading cause for fatigue failure in turbine blades. This thesis presents the finite element analysis methods to estimate the maximum vibrational stresses of rotating structures under forced excitation. The presentation included starts with the derived equations of motion for vibration of rotating beams using energy methods under the Euler Bernoulli beam assumptions. The nonlinear large displacement formulation captures the centrifugal stiffening and gyroscopic effects. The weak form of the equations and their finite element discretization are shown. The methods implemented were used for normal modes analyses and forced vibration analyses of rotating beam structures. The prediction of peak stresses under simultaneous multi-mode excitation show that the maximum vibrational stresses estimated using the linear superposition of the stresses can greatly overestimate the stresses if the phase information due to damping (physical and gyroscopic effects) are neglected. The last section of this thesis also presents the results of a practical study that involves finite element analysis and redesign of a composite propeller.

Book Static Stresses on Wide bladed Propellers

Download or read book Static Stresses on Wide bladed Propellers written by Justin H. McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static stresses were obtained in laboratory experiments for a destroyer propeller, having aerofoil blade sections, and a super-cavitating propeller, having wedge-shaped blade sections, using specially constructed pressure chambers that allowed the blade faces to be loaded under air pressure. A new method for applying beam theory is presented that closely predicts the magnitude and distribution of radial stresses on the destroyer propeller blade. For the supercavitating propeller, neither the proposed beam-theory method nor a particular computerized-shell analysis can be considered entirely satisfactory for prediction of blade stresses. Book Wind tunnel Vibration Tests of a Four blade Single rotating Pusher Propeller

Download or read book Wind tunnel Vibration Tests of a Four blade Single rotating Pusher Propeller written by Mason F. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1943 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Vibration tests of a four-blade single-rotating propeller operating in a simulated pusher condition were performed because the combination of wake and downwash behind a wing was expected to provide serious excitation for reactionless vibrations of propellers with four or more blades. The tests were conducted in the LMAL 16-foot high-speed tunnel with a wing mounted at thrust-axis level ahead of the propeller; the blade sections at three-fourths the propeller radius operated at approximately twice their chords behind the trailing edge of the tapered wing at their closet position. Measurements of propeller vibratory stress were made for various airspeeds, engine speeds, and engine powers.

Book PVAST Propeller Vibration and Strength Analysis Program Version 7 3 User s Manual

Download or read book PVAST Propeller Vibration and Strength Analysis Program Version 7 3 User s Manual written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a user's manual for the finite element analysis code called PVAST (Propeller Vibration And STrength) that is used for prediction of stress and vibration in marine propellers, PVAST can automatically generate propeller finite element models from basic propeller geometry defined by the orientation of two dimensional wrapped blade sections at specified radii. A number of different models can be considered and various types of structural finite element analyses can be conducted. The program provides plotting of blade geometry and visualization of predicted finite element model displacements, stresses & mode shapes. The code has been modified recently to include a Windows-based graphical user interface and the manual includes direction on using PVAST to create, modify, & display propeller blade geometry & finite element models and to display analysis results. Sample screens & outputs are included.

Book PROPELLER BLADE VARIATION EXPERIMENTS

Download or read book PROPELLER BLADE VARIATION EXPERIMENTS written by S. SLUTSKY and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was carried out to determine the mode shapes and frequencies of a model of a typical naval propeller. The purpose of this program is to make available detailed relevant data to be used for evaluating the results of a parallel theoretical and numerical program of vibration and stress analysis of practical naval propellers. Tests carried out with both piezoelectric and capacitance probes gave practically identical results which indicated the necessity of further extension of the numerical program, and, in particular, a large increase in the number of degrees of freedom used. It was also noted that interblade coupling through the hub produces a splitting of the single blade frequencies into several frequencies (theoretically four) with a maximum separation (in air) of about 10%. Book Instrumentation for Propeller Blade Vibration Flight and Ground Testing

Download or read book Instrumentation for Propeller Blade Vibration Flight and Ground Testing written by Anthony J. Barile and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for in-flight propeller stress measurements has been evident for the last three decades. This report documents the various instrumentation systems, methods, and techniques particularly suited to this purpose. The stress measurement process, in general terms, is considered with a more detailed description of the various options available to transmit signals from the propeller to the airframe. The procedures with which the transmitted signals may be recorded, processed, and reduced to meaningful information are presented with an assessment of their relative merits. An in-depth description of strain gage installation techniques is presented, depicting short- as well as long-term all-weather installations, heretofore uncommon in the state-of-the-art. Further discussion is addressed to electronic data processing and a typical flight test profile.
