Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proof complexity is a rich subject drawing on methods from logic, combinatorics, algebra and computer science. This self-contained book presents the basic concepts, classical results, current state of the art and possible future directions in the field. It stresses a view of proof complexity as a whole entity rather than a collection of various topics held together loosely by a few notions, and it favors more generalizable statements. Lower bounds for lengths of proofs, often regarded as the key issue in proof complexity, are of course covered in detail. However, upper bounds are not neglected: this book also explores the relations between bounded arithmetic theories and proof systems and how they can be used to prove upper bounds on lengths of proofs and simulations among proof systems. It goes on to discuss topics that transcend specific proof systems, allowing for deeper understanding of the fundamental problems of the subject.

Book Logical Foundations of Proof Complexity

Download or read book Logical Foundations of Proof Complexity written by Stephen Cook and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats bounded arithmetic and propositional proof complexity from the point of view of computational complexity. The first seven chapters include the necessary logical background for the material and are suitable for a graduate course. Associated with each of many complexity classes are both a two-sorted predicate calculus theory, with induction restricted to concepts in the class, and a propositional proof system. The result is a uniform treatment of many systems in the literature, including Buss's theories for the polynomial hierarchy and many disparate systems for complexity classes such as AC0, AC0(m), TC0, NC1, L, NL, NC, and P.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 16 papers reflect some of the breakthroughs over the past dozen years in understanding whether or not logical inferences can be made in certain situations and what resources are necessary to make such inferences, questions that play a large role in computer science and artificial intelligence. They discuss such aspects as lower bounds in proof complexity, witnessing theorems and proof systems for feasible arithmetic, algebraic and combinatorial proof systems, and the relationship between proof complexity and Boolean circuit complexity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book principally concerns the rapidly growing area of "Logical Complexity Theory", the study of bounded arithmetic, propositional proof systems, length of proof, etc and relations to computational complexity theory. Additional features of the book include (1) the transcription and translation of a recently discovered 1956 letter from K Godel to J von Neumann, asking about a polynomial time algorithm for the proof in k-symbols of predicate calculus formulas (equivalent to the P-NP question), (2) an OPEN PROBLEM LIST consisting of 7 fundamental and 39 technical questions contributed by many researchers, together with a bibliography of relevant references.

Book Space in Weak Propositional Proof Systems

Download or read book Space in Weak Propositional Proof Systems written by Ilario Bonacina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers logical proof systems from the point of view of their space complexity. After an introduction to propositional proof complexity the author structures the book into three main parts. Part I contains two chapters on resolution, one containing results already known in the literature before this work and one focused on space in resolution, and the author then moves on to polynomial calculus and its space complexity with a focus on the combinatorial technique to prove monomial space lower bounds. The first chapter in Part II addresses the proof complexity and space complexity of the pigeon principles. Then there is an interlude on a new type of game, defined on bipartite graphs, essentially independent from the rest of the book, collecting some results on graph theory. Finally Part III analyzes the size of resolution proofs in connection with the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH) in complexity theory. The book is appropriate for researchers in theoretical computer science, in particular computational complexity.

Book The Efficiency of Theorem Proving Strategies

Download or read book The Efficiency of Theorem Proving Strategies written by David A. Plaisted and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This book is unique in that it gives asymptotic bounds on the sizes of the search spaces generated by many common theorem proving strategies. Thus it permits one to gain a theoretical unterstanding of the efficiencies of many different theorem proving methods. This is a fundamental new tool in the comparative study of theorem proving strategies.

Book Boolean Function Complexity

Download or read book Boolean Function Complexity written by Stasys Jukna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boolean circuit complexity is the combinatorics of computer science and involves many intriguing problems that are easy to state and explain, even for the layman. This book is a comprehensive description of basic lower bound arguments, covering many of the gems of this “complexity Waterloo” that have been discovered over the past several decades, right up to results from the last year or two. The problems are mainly of combinatorial flavor but their solutions could have great consequences in circuit complexity and computer science. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the fields of computer science and discrete mathematics.
