Book excerpt: Purpose: To determine if reminder calls and immunization prompts by physicians, defined as prompts for prevention, is associated with>1st dose HPV vaccination among 11- 17 year old females in San Diego County. Methods: 407 individuals reported immunization information through a random digit dialing (RDD) survey conducted by the San Diego Immunization Branch (SDIB). To determine the association between prompts for prevention and HPV vaccine uptake, SAS 9.2 was used for analysis. The association between race and education level with HPV vaccine uptake were investigated as well. Results: Analysis of the RDD survey revealed 33% of the 11-17 year old females being vaccinated with> 1st dose of the HPV vaccine. The proportion of 11-17 year olds who received high prompt services was 13.5%, followed by 21.4% receiving medium prompt services, and most experienced low services (65.1%). Book excerpt: Purpose: To determine facilitators and barriers in Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination uptake among adolescent males in Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers (FQHCs) in the Seattle area. Study Design: A qualitative study utilizing the Health Belief model conducted through individual interviews of parents, and providers, of 11-17 year old males in FQHCs in the Seattle area. Methods: The study involved semi-structured individual interviews with 6 parents/guardians and 3 healthcare providers of 11-17 year old adolescent boys in a FQHC setting. The questions were aimed at determining the facilitators and barriers in the uptake of HPV vaccination in this particular population from the perspective of both the parents/guardians and the providers. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim for coding. The coded data was analyzed to determine common themes among parents and providers separately. Results: Several emergent themes related to HPV vaccine uptake were identified from the analyzed data from parent and provider interviews. The resulting themes included both barriers and facilitators to HPV vaccine uptake among 11-17 years old boys in FQHCs in the Seattle area. The themes involved parents, providers, healthcare system and health policy. Recommendation In the absence of a mandate for HPV vaccine as a requirement for school entry, lack of parental awareness and blind faith in providers by parents in FQHCs in the Seattle area, we suggest a strong providers’ recommendation as a mean for improving HPV vaccination uptake in this particular population. We recommend a multifaceted intervention that involves providers/staff training to effectively deliver strong recommendation for HPV vaccination to parents and a reminder system to help providers/staff deliver that recommendation urgently and consistently to 11-12 years old boys.

Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. She chronicles how the search for a male pill required significant reorganization of drug-testing standards and protocols and of the family-planning infrastructure—including founding special clinics for men, creating separate spaces for men within existing clinics, enrolling new professionals, and defining new categories of patients. The Male Pill is ultimately a story as much about the design of masculinities in the last decades of the twentieth century as it is about the development of safe and effective technologies.
