Book How to Raise Kids Who Aren t Assholes

Download or read book How to Raise Kids Who Aren t Assholes written by Melinda Wenner Moyer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Raise Kids Who Aren't Assholes is a clear, actionable, sometimes humorous (but always science-based) guide for parents on how to shape their kids into honest, kind, generous, confident, independent, and resilient people...who just might save the world one day. As an award-winning science journalist, Melinda Wenner Moyer was regularly asked to investigate and address all kinds of parenting questions: how to potty train, when and whether to get vaccines, and how to help kids sleep through the night. But as Melinda's children grew, she found that one huge area was ignored in the realm of parenting advice: how do we make sure our kids don't grow up to be assholes? On social media, in the news, and from the highest levels of government, kids are increasingly getting the message that being selfish, obnoxious and cruel is okay. Hate crimes among children and teens are rising, while compassion among teens has been dropping. We know, of course, that young people have the capacity for great empathy, resilience, and action, and we all want to bring up kids who will help build a better tomorrow. But how do we actually do this? How do we raise children who are kind, considerate, and ethical inside and outside the home, who will grow into adults committed to making the world a better place? How to Raise Kids Who Aren't Assholes is a deeply researched, evidence-based primer that provides a fresh, often surprising perspective on parenting issues, from toddlerhood through the teenage years. First, Melinda outlines the traits we want our children to possess—including honesty, generosity, and antiracism—and then she provides scientifically-based strategies that will help parents instill those characteristics in their kids. Learn how to raise the kind of kids you actually want to hang out with—and who just might save the world.

It offers a succinct synthesis of where the field is and where it needs to go. It brings together an international group of leading researchers, and, in view of globalization and increased migration and immigration, it addresses what aspects of children and youth growing in ethnic minority families are universal across contexts and what aspects are more context-specific. The Handbook examines the individual, family, peers, and neighborhood/policy factors that protect children and promote positive adaptation. It examines the factors that support children’s social integration, psychosocial adaptation, and external functioning. Finally, it looks at the mechanisms that explain why social adaptation occurs.

Book SELF A Multidisciplinary Concept

Download or read book SELF A Multidisciplinary Concept written by Theresa Dicke and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the self relates to various phenomena including self-esteem, self-concept, self-verification, self-awareness, identity, self-efficacy, passion, self-determination, and goals. Moreover, research on self is multidisciplinary and of interest to a broad range of areas, such as education, economics, (social) psychology, neuro sciences, motivation, physical activity and behavior sciences, philosophy, and learning sciences. Chapters in this volume will illustrate some of the best of the research within these disciplines examining different aspects of self from various perspectives. A feature of this volume is that we will explore not only positive aspects of high perceived levels of self-determination and competence or self-concept on achievement, motivation and wellbeing, but also the dark side of an uncertain and negative self on identity and wellbeing. We learn from this that the self is a dynamic and powerful, yet fragile and highly amenable construct that needs self-care and constant reassurance. SELF – A Multidisciplinary Concept thus highlights the broad application of self-research and its diversity. This volume is intended to develop both theoretical and methodological ideas and to present empirical evidence of various disciplines and applications dealing with self. The scope of this seventh volume of the International Advances in Self Research series, started in 2000 by Herbert W. Marsh, Dennis M. McInerney, and Rhonda G. Craven, is thus very broad. Keeping within the tradition of the series, this volume will highlight the applicability of a multitude of empirical approaches and methods to self-research. We also aimed to maintain a balance between discussing theoretical research in SELF and deriving implications for effective practice. This volume thus includes chapters covering self-related topics within an educational, social, emotional, psychological, physiological, managerial, and health context.

However, many times the lack of self-esteem can become an obstacle on our way to happiness and success. That is why I invite you to embark on a 21-day journey to increase your self-esteem. During this time, I will accompany you in a process of reflection, learning and practicing skills to strengthen your confidence and self-esteem. Through exercises, reflections and practical tips, you will discover how to change negative thought patterns into positive ones, how to set healthy boundaries, how to take care of your body and mind, and how to foster healthy interpersonal relationships. Remember that the road to healthy self-esteem is not easy, but it is possible and worth it. Take each day as a challenge and an opportunity to grow and move towards a better version of yourself. Let's begin this journey together! What is self-esteem and why is it important to increase it? Self-esteem is a key aspect of our personality, but what exactly is it and why is it important to increase it? In this article, we will explore these questions and discover how self-esteem can influence our daily lives. Self-esteem is defined as a person's appraisal of themselves, i.e. how they see themselves and how they feel about their abilities, strengths and weaknesses. A person with high self-esteem feels self-confident, confident in his or her abilities and capable of facing life's challenges. On the other hand, a person with low self-esteem may feel insecure, inadequate and unable to handle difficult situations. It is important to note that self-esteem is not a fixed or permanent characteristic of our personality, but can be molded and changed throughout life. In fact, healthy self-esteem is crucial to our emotional and physical well-being, as well as to our ability to develop healthy and productive relationships. One of the main reasons why it is important to increase self-esteem is because it influences our ability to make decisions and act effectively. When we feel self-confident and confident in our abilities, we are more likely to take risks and face challenges. Conversely, when we have low self-esteem, we tend to avoid situations that we perceive as threatening or challenging, which can limit our personal and professional growth. In addition, self-esteem can also influence our interpersonal relationships. When we have healthy self-esteem, it is easier for us to set healthy boundaries and communicate effectively with others. We are also more likely to surround ourselves with positive and constructive people who are supportive and encouraging. On the other hand, when our self-esteem is low, we may have difficulty setting healthy boundaries and communicating effectively, which can result in toxic or unsatisfactory relationships. Another important aspect of self-esteem is its impact on our emotional and physical well-being. When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel happier, relaxed and at peace with ourselves. In addition, healthy self-esteem can also help us better manage stress and anxiety, which can improve our physical health and reduce the risk of stress-related illnesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant children and youth are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. Children of Immigrants represents some of the very best and most extensive research efforts to date on the circumstances, health, and development of children in immigrant families and the delivery of health and social services to these children and their families. This book presents new, detailed analyses of more than a dozen existing datasets that constitute a large share of the national system for monitoring the health and well-being of the U.S. population. Prior to these new analyses, few of these datasets had been used to assess the circumstances of children in immigrant families. The analyses enormously expand the available knowledge about the physical and mental health status and risk behaviors, educational experiences and outcomes, and socioeconomic and demographic circumstances of first- and second-generation immigrant children, compared with children with U.S.-born parents.

Start your journey today Build your self-confidence and become all that you were meant to be! Author Judy H. Wright Judy is a parent educator, family coach, and personal historian who has written more than 20 books, hundreds of articles and speaks internationally on family issues, including end of life. She works with Head Start organizations and child care resource centers. The symbol of the artichoke has great meaning for Judy in her teaching and writing. As she works with families, she sees that frequently only the outer edges are exposed and they can be prickly and sometimes bitter to the taste. But, as you expose the artichoke and people to warmth, caring, and time, gradually the leaves begin to open and expose the real treasure-the heart. The artichoke also became a teaching lesson when Judy, with her young family, moved into military housing in California to find Artichokes in their yard. Given that it takes two years for the vegetable to flower, the original gardener never got to see the seeds of her labor. Many times, our actions and reactions in life are felt by people we will never meet, but we plant the seeds of kindness anyway. You will enjoy Judy's approachable manner, wonderful storytelling andcommon-sense solutions gleaned from working with hundreds of families and organizations just like yours. Your encounter with Judy will leave you feeling inspired, entertained and especially motivated.

Book The Social Importance of Self Esteem

Download or read book The Social Importance of Self Esteem written by Andrew Mecca and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1989-08-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the well-being of a society dependent on the well-being of its citizenry? Does individual self-esteem play a causal role in chronic social problems such as child abuse, school drop-out rates, teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drug abuse, welfare dependency? In an attempt to answer these questions, the State of California established a task force on self-esteem and social responsibility in 1987. The aim of this body was to determine what connections might exist between these two factors and to suggest policy guidelines relating to the welfare of Californians and to the expenditure of public resources. The ten essays in this volume, prepared by faculty members of the University of California, draw on research in the social and behavioral sciences to explore these issues. They assess the substantive assertions and research findings in the field and make careful evaluations of their reliability and validity. In many cases strong connections between self-esteem and problematic behavior are established, in others the connections are weak, and in some the causal relationship is, as yet, imperfectly understood. One of the conclusions of the book is that research on these issues needs to be improved, particularly in the areas of comparative and longitudinal studies. Guidelines for future research are suggested, and some points of policy direction are elaborated. These essays may indeed promote additional research, for the premise that social stability and welfare are largely dependent on the psychological state of a people poses a challenging and provocative counter-emphasis to the assumption that social institutions are the primary determinants of individual welfare.
