History is where the mold of the present is created, and Masood Rezvi has done his job well in describing that mold to make sense of the present. While the book has all the technical details necessary to navigate through the labyrinths of the financial system, the author has been extremely careful to present them in a manner comprehensible for a non-expert reader. The experts, on the other hand, will find the narrative refreshing in its approach, technical precision, and conclusions. This book is another step towards dissecting the mechanism of the current financial system that has created a divide between the rich and the poor, a gap too wide to be filled with just the promises to pay.

Lucian Bebchuk and Jesse Fried demonstrate that corporate boards have persistently failed to negotiate at arm's length with the executives they are meant to oversee. They give a richly detailed account of how pay practices--from option plans to retirement benefits--have decoupled compensation from performance and have camouflaged both the amount and performance-insensitivity of pay. Executives' unwonted influence over their compensation has hurt shareholders by increasing pay levels and, even more importantly, by leading to practices that dilute and distort managers' incentives. Goldrick-Rab examines a study of 3,000 students who used the support of federal aid and Pell Grants to enroll in public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008. Half the students in the study left college without a degree, while less than 20 percent finished within five years. The cause of their problems, time and again, was lack of money. Unable to afford tuition, books, and living expenses, they worked too many hours at outside jobs, dropped classes, took time off to save money, and even went without adequate food or housing.
