For the waters had separated and the process of incrustation was started. What makes the world go around is the Divine Desire manifesting itself through the interrelationship of its parts. That Desire is not only beyond Spirit-Matter, it is the very cause of the two Opposing Forces. Earth is Solid Fire; water Liquid Fire; air Semi-spiritual Fire. The Spirit of the Earth is Hestia-Vesta, says Proclus. But Vesta is neither the spiritual, nor the physical Sun. She is animated by the Spirit of Life. Gaia’s symbol is Gamma, the third Greek letter and ideogram of both life eternal and of earthly life. The Jewish kabbalists, especially the practical Occultists who dealt with ceremonial magic, busied themselves solely with the spirits of the Planets and the “Elementals,” so-called. The Christian Theologians opposed the theory of the Earth’s rotation because, besides depriving our orb of its dignified central position in space, this theory produced an appalling confusion of ideas as to the Ascension, thus complicating the precise locality of heaven. The Spirit of Life issues from the Earth’s North Pole, flows around her, and becomes foul at the South Pole. In the first beginnings of human life on Earth, the only dry land was on the North Pole, where the gods rested and Fohat reigns ever since. Incrustation, however, is an incredibly slow process: the Earth did not reach her present grade of density until eighteen million years ago. The Earth needs solar heat and rain to make her throw out her germs. The procreative properties of Fire and Water, or Spirit and Matter, are symbols only of physical generation. In other words, Fire and Water are illusive emanations of their spiritual prototypes and, therefore, unclean and unholy. The Earth is now in her middle principle the astral body of self-importance, graspingness, and greed. Her present principle, the fourth in her septempartite constitution, is the astral body of desires (Kama-rupa) and of dark egotism (Ahamkara), the offspring of Mahat-Nous. The Earth will reach her true ultimate form, inversely in this to man, only toward the end of the Manvantara after the Seventh Round.

Cosmogenesis and Anthropogenesis numerically and geometrically expressed. The One attracts within itself the Divine Unity of the One Circle and forms out of It the Perfect Square, thus “squaring the circle.” The Great Circle or Ring Pass-Not is the “Rope of the Angels” hedging off the phenomenal from the noumenal Kosmos. That Circle is the Universal Principle which, from any given point, expands to embrace all things, while embodying the potentiality of every action in Kosmos. How does the Triangle become the Square? How does the Square become the Six-faced Cube? How does the Triad becomes a Tetrad, the Pythagorean Perfect Square in heaven, and a Cube on earth? Mathematically expressed, Logos become Tetragrammaton, i.e., the Three become Four. When the Spiritual Ego, the holy number , germ and matrix of the , enters the animal body, the faces of the cube unfold, thus forming the cross of passions upon which material man (Chrēstos) crucifies himself and disappoints his glorious Spirit (Christos). Kabbalistic interpretation of the “crucifixion nails” reveals their sexual meaning. The occult meaning of the Svastika, emblem of the activity of Fohat, symbolised by the figure and the Sacred Four, explained. The true Word may only be found by tracing the mystery of the passage inward and outward of Life Eternal, through the states typified in the Unmanifested Circle, the Triangle, and the Perfect Square. “The true Word may only be found by tracing the mystery of the passage inward and outward of the Eternal Life, through the states typified in these three geometric figures,” says a Master of Wisdom. The Divine Heptad is the key to squaring the circle and to the philosophers’ stone, which is no stone. The Ineffable Word, being composed of Seven Letters, represents the First Hebdomad. The Seventh Letter is the highest in initiations; the remaining six are substitutes. The Sacred Word is the Central Mathematical Point, around which the Six-pointed star, emblem of the Theosophical Society, revolves and evolves. The meaning of two Interlaced Triangles explained by a Master of Wisdom. The Unmanifested Circle or Absolute Life, is non-existent outside the Ideal Triangle and Perfect Square. It manifests through them as the “Son,” i.e., Kosmos and Man. On the outward Path of Action, the Second One (Atma), in order to manifest itself as Logos, Its concealed duality (Atma-Buddhi) has to become three (Atma-Buddhi-Manas). On the inward Path of Renunciation, Logos Revealed attracts within Itself the Circle and reverts to Its original state of Absolute Unity by forming out of it the Perfect Square, and inscribing within it the Ineffable Name. Blavatsky to certain attacks by G.W. Foote, exposing his bigotry and “innocent” aberrations. Intellectually, Mr. Foote is on a far lower plane than Mrs. Besant. A noble heart like Mrs. Besant’s listens to no voice, save that of the inner voice of Truth — that of man’s divine nature, to which Mr. Foote is deaf and blind. Since Mr. Foote dares not ventilate his senseless rage upon Mrs. Besant, he turns round and, like a coward, slanders another woman because he hopes to have nothing to fear from her. A noble example of Freethought, indeed! He is a poor imitator of all those Dissenters and Sectarians of the unctuously hypocritical type. They, at least, have the merit of original invention, while he only repeats what he hears others say, and even that he must, of necessity, mix up and confuse! His work is that of an accomplished charlatan. While Mr. Foote regards the ethics of Theosophy as detestable, Theosophists regard the teachings of Materialism as despicable. Materialism, with all its arrogance, can hardly claim possession of the last word of science, its negative views being simply the result of the collective experiences of sceptics in every age. The doctrine of reincarnation, flippantly called metempsychosis, is as old as the world. Our materialistic critic seems quite innocent of the distinction between theoretical and practical altruism but proud to claim kinship with the gorilla. He is a very brutal but not skilful fencer, and his arguments are as blunt as the fencer’s foils which hit but hurt not. Mr. Foote shows himself absurdly ignorant of the subjects of his insane attacks. It is, however, Freethought alone that he injures by such language, Theosophy being too invulnerable to be wounded by such poor logic as seems to be at his disposal. In his philological achievements, Mazzini Wheeler, the other apostle of Freethought, seems unable to recognize one Buddhist name from another, quoting and repeating parrot-like information culled from Schlagintweit and Sarat Chandra.

If fault there was, man can only see it through the tears which, as he condemns, wash out fault and absolve the faulty. Who can peer into two sealed hearts and read characters which have been obliterated by torrents of tears, and which are only visible to the eye of God?

The torrent of letters from our opponents, pouring upon us from all sides, compelled us to lower the flag of truce which we have hitherto presented to spiritualists. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. The peacock’s feathers of the Indian Dailies and Weeklies, which are made to clumsily cover the ugly bird beneath, now painfully ruffled stand on end, can no longer hide the ravenous crow. Christian charity and malicious slandering of innocent people are mutually exclusive with the true religion of Christ (who has nothing to do with modern christrinity), however much they have become synonymic in the mind of some Bishops and their clergy. Those Anglo-Indian editors who done their best to injure the Theosophists, not only they patently failed in their unholy attempt, they did help our Branches to skyrocket worldwide. The sanctioning and spreading of flagrant untruths and malicious innuendoes, constitutes a dishonourable and venomous act — all the more reprehensible as it comes from the missionary press of Bombay. The clerical and Jesuitical policy is to disseminate false rumours, malicious backbiting, wicked and stupid cock-and-bull stories, by salaried catechists, zenana-missionaries, and padris under the sanction and with the blessings of their respective Bishops. We are charged with anti-Christism, while we are guilty but of anti-clericalism; and with a “fierce hatred of the Church,” when we confess but to a ferocious contempt for the ecclesiastical system — the system that crucifies its Christ daily, tramples His commands in the dust under his feet, and disfigures His noblest and most divine teachings! Other persons, nobler and far higher in social position than we, humble Theosophists, are no better protected against scurrilous abuse in the Indian Empire; and thus we find ourselves standing on parallel lines with His Excellency, the Viceroy of India.

A bullying descendant of Ananias, in the Agnostic Journal, pontificates that the theosophical doctrines are “phallic worship.” Can an Atheist be a Theosophist? The Theosophical Society is an international and unsectarian body of kindred souls. While showing respect for every religion and school of thought, it prides itself on belonging to none, save to the Spirit of Truth or Theosophy. In other words, our Society is a brotherhood of men and women in search of Absolute Truth — an uncompromising Republic of Conscience. Narrow-mindedness, scepticism, and worldly philosophy have no room in it. Gautama Buddha is the pre-eminent Theosophist of all ages. Haweis and Headlam transformed their pulpits into oratorial tribunes similar to those in ancient Athens, where feminine beauty in general, and Aspasia and Company in particular, were defended. There are two Jesuses: The real Jesus, a Master of Wisdom, and Jesus travestied by pseudo-Christian fancy and clad in pagan robes borrowed from heathen gods. Thus the exalted Christianity of Jesus has been degraded to “Church” Christianity.

On the contrary, the silence of those who damned themselves forever in order to save man from himself, is prompted by a far-seeing universal philanthropy. Good works may exist without actuating saving Principles, but saving Principles never did exist without good works. The Churches have failed to supply the intellectual light, and the true wisdom which are needed to make practical philanthropy carried out, by the true and earnest followers of Christ, a reality. Practical charity is not one of the declared objects of the Theosophical Society. Yet Theosophy creates the charity which afterwards, and of its own accord, makes itself manifest in good works. Theosophy proclaims the spirit of non-separateness, exposes the futility of creeds and dogma, and inculcates universal love and charity for all mankind. Theosophy is therefore pre-eminently fit to alleviate the woes and sufferings of man since he began cherishing in his bosom the desire of a higher freedom and knowledge. The religious philanthropist who hopes to gain salvation by good works has merely exchanged worldliness for other-worldliness. The secular philanthropist is really at heart a socialist, and nothing else; he hopes to make men happy and good by bettering their worldly position. Practical philanthropists, after long and bitter experience, will arrive at a conclusion which, to an Occultist, is from the first a working hypothesis — that misery is not only endurable, but agreeable to many who endure it. Physical philanthropy, apart from the infusion of new influences and ennobling conceptions of life into the minds of the masses, is worthless. The gradual assimilation by mankind of great spiritual truths will alone revolutionize the face of civilization, and ultimately result in a far more effective panacea for evil, than the mere tinkering of superficial misery. Prevention is not only “better than cure,” it is the only cure. Those who, amidst the present wholesale dominion of the worship of matter, material interests, and bare selfishness, will have bravely fought for human rights and man’s divine nature, will become the teachers of the masses and their benefactors. The protectors and Saviours of the now resurrecting human thought and spirit are those who will have learnt to express and put into practice the aspirations as well as the physical needs of the rising generations, and of the now trampled-down masses. In order that one should fully comprehend individual life, with its physiological, psychic, and spiritual mysteries, he has to devote himself with all the fervour of unselfish philanthropy and love for his fellow man. And by studying and knowing collective life, i.e., mankind, he has to decipher, understand, and remember the innermost feelings and aspirations of the poor people’s great and suffering heart: (1) by attuning his soul with that of humanity at large, as the old philosophy teaches; and (2) by mastering the meaning of every line and word in the rapidly turning pages of the Book of Life in the secure knowledge that his Self is inseparable from all Selves. How many profound readers of life may be found in our boasted age of sciences and culture? Theosophical charity in the heart of every true Theosophist must urge him to eschew reprisals and never to return evil for evil, so long as truth damaging to his enemies can be withheld without danger to the Cause.

But social earthquakes and moral pestilence go with man where he goes, and cannot be averted by any alteration of place. As solid Earth began as a ball of liquid fire, so did man. At the beginning of every new Round, the earth casts off her old skins as the serpent does his skin to be born again. Her Seven Skins stand for the seven geological changes which accompany and correspond to the evolution of the Seven Root-Races of humanity. The human races that succeed each other are separated by large-scale change in the earth’s surface and rapid continental subsidence. Violent minor cataclysms and colossal earthquakes are etched in the annals of most nations. Elevation and subsidence of continents continue as we speak. The Himalayas, the Alps, and the American Cordillera were depositions drifted to the bottom of the seas and then upheaved by Titanic forces to their present elevation. Earth is convulsed each time that it reawakens for a new period of activity, like a field which has to be ploughed and furrowed before fresh seed for its new crop is thrown into it. At last, the form of the gigantic Ape-Man of the former Round has been reproduced in this one by human bestiality and transfigured into the parent form in the modern Anthropoid. The old astrologers and mathematicians predicted natural disasters with far more precision and correctness, than their modern counterparts. Modern buildings may tumble into the street, but much of the ancient monuments remain intact. The “wonders” of our age are the nightmares of the times, where philosophicules pour out modern wisdom as milk, and curdle it like cheese.
