For more than 150 years governments and private firms had been flying into space, but they still had not reached a point at which they had established a viable space travel industry. The growing public opinion was that they were spending too much money, wasting too much of Earth's scarce resources and were no nearer to the routine hauling of passengers and freight than they were 150 years ago. The idea of space travel beyond our planetary system had faded to a level of 'wild fantasy.' While an innovative spacecraft manufacturing company and an aggressive airline firm brought space travel to the level of a viable industry with the introduction of a propulsion system without the need to carry a fuel load. The new ships were powered by electrical energy. But they had a serious limitation: there had to be a power station at the destination. With bases on planets and satellites further and further away, they gradually established a system to exploit the resources of other planets and asteroids, mining and discovering new minerals. This story is about the results of a discovery on one of those planets that enabled the development of a propulsion system that revolutionized space travel, allowing journeys beyond the solar system.

Book excerpt: The augmentation of urban spaces with technology, commonly referred to as Media Architecture, has found increasing interest in the scientific community within the last few years. At the same time architects began to use digital media as a new material apart from concrete, glass or wood to create buildings and urban structures. Simultaneously, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers began to exploit the interaction opportunities between users and buildings and to bridge the gaps between interface, information medium and architecture. As an example, they extended architectural structures with interactive, light-emitting elements on their outer shell, thereby transforming the surfaces of these structures into giant public screens. At the same time the wide distribution of mobile devices and the coverage of mobile internet allow manifold interaction opportunities between open data and citizens, thereby enabling the internet of things in the public domain. However, the appropriate distribution of information to all citizens is still cumbersome and a mutual dialogue not always successful (i.e. who gets what data and when?). In this book we therefore provide a deeper investigation of Using Information and Media as Construction Material with media architecture as an input and output medium.

Digital Cities explores the study of the city in the digital realm by reexamining the data processing and knowledge sharing between historians, architects, geographers, anthropologist, and computer scientists. Should heritage be approached as a ‘non-renewable resource’ that needs to be sustained for eternity, or as a ‘renewable resource’ that adapts to change and transformation? Heritage Dynamics deconstructs the dynamic nature of heritage. Heritage as a socio-cultural practice goes through non-linear, continuous lifecycles, where certain factors will be the catalyst for the ending of one lifecycle and the revival for another. Kalliopi Fouseki develops a theoretical and methodological framework of ‘heritage dynamics’, which is used as the analytical thread of six heritage contexts: heritage-led transformation in historic urban places; decision-making on energy efficiency and heritage conservation in ‘everyday heritage’ residential buildings; lifecycles of heritage collections; exhibition dynamics and the impact of participation with emphasis of ‘difficult heritage’; dynamics of dissonance on contested museums and the dynamics of ‘intangible heritage’ with emphasis on flamenco. The book offers a new theoretical and methodological framework that will enable heritage scholars and practitioners to unpack the ways and conditions under which heritage changes. The new theoretical framework will re-orientate current thinking of heritage as a thing, a process or discourse towards a new, more systemic thinking that captures the complexity of heritage.
