Book excerpt: Depuis quelques années, des travaux réalisés dans l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent ont révélé que certaines tourbières constituent des sites de prédilection pour la nidification du Canard noir. C'est notamment le cas de la tourbière du plateau de L'Isle-Verte où certains secteurs présentent une densité de nids qui n'est égalée nulle part ailleurs en Amérique du Nord. Lors de l'éclosion des oeufs, les canetons doivent parcourir de longues distances vers des milieux plus riches pour subvenir à leurs besoins. Ces déplacements peuvent entraîner une forte mortalité des jeunes. Ce projet-pilote vise donc à élaborer un concept d'aménagement pour créer des sites d'élevage. La tourbière du plateau de L'Isle-Verte est, en général, du type ombrotrophe. Il est donc primodial, dans une perspective d'aménagement favorisant les habitats fauniques, d'identifier les sites à caractère minérotrophe pour atteindre une meilleure biodiversité. Plusieurs indicateurs comme la végétation, la circulation de l'eau et le pH sont utilisés pour identifier les sites productifs et planifier les aménagements.

This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.A joint project of Brazil’s National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.
