Book Equations of Projectile Motion in a Flexible Gun Tube

Download or read book Equations of Projectile Motion in a Flexible Gun Tube written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report presents the formulation of a system of simultaneous differential equations which describes the general motion of a projectile of finite geometry and inertia traveling in a flexible gun tube. The formulation permits the projectile six degrees-of-freedom relative to the gun tube; three orthogonal translational motions of the projectile c.g. relative to the instantaneous gun tube axis and three (Eulerian) rotational motions of the projectile about it c.g. The formulation is presented in terms of interior ballistics data, projectile design data, and gun tube design and motion data. The formulation accounts for projectile spin, mass eccentricity, elastic deformation of the projectile rotating band and bourrelet, and projectile/bore interfacial friction and torque transmission. Furhtermore, the formulation is unrestricted regarding the nature of gun tube motion. The formulation has been compared with projectile descriptions and formulations employed by other investigators and, based upon this comparison, isconsidered to be the most generally applicable projectile in-bore motion formulation appearing in recent literature.

Book Dynamics of a Projectile in a Concentric Flexible Tube

Download or read book Dynamics of a Projectile in a Concentric Flexible Tube written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the four main sections in this report deals with the motion, the forces, and the moments experiences by a gun tube with a straight axis and an offset breech, and with certain simple types of support. Section I presents a development of the kinematics of a projectile in a concentric moving flexible tube. Section 2 treats the forces and moments that act on a projectile in terms of kinematic variables of the tube. Section 3 treats the motion of a tapered cantilever tube that is actuated by the projectile and by prescribed motion at the breech. In Section 4, the problem of a rigid curve tube that is hinged at the breech so that it can swing sideways is treated.

Book Transverse Motion of 8 Inch Projectile XM673 in the XM201 M2A2 Gun Tube Mk 16 and MCLG Gun

Download or read book Transverse Motion of 8 Inch Projectile XM673 in the XM201 M2A2 Gun Tube Mk 16 and MCLG Gun written by Szu Hsiung Chu and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic behavior of a projectile during acceleration in the gun tube requires a quantitative description, since, if balloting becomes excessive, undesirable conditions such as damage to fuzing, shell body engraving, inaccuracy of fire due to yaw, and yaw velocity at the muzzle may result. The approach taken in this report utilizes the equations of motion derived in an earlier report titled, 'Transverse Motion of an Accelerating Shell' to describe the balloting motion of the 8-inch XM673 projectile fired in the MK-16, MCLG gun, XM201 and M2A2 gun tubes. Most previous solutions which have appeared in published works to date discuss the problem in a simple way, or consider separately the main factors that effect projectile motion. Effects of friction forces at the bourrelet and the driving band, changes of the eccentricity and the location of the center of gravity, and the wall thickness of the shell were considered in this formulation. The analysis shows that the contact of the bourrelet on the gun tube is intermittent when the C.G. eccentricity is zero or very small and the contact is continuous when the eccentricity is large and that this parameter is the one that most affects the performance of the projectile and the associated fuze. The analytical results are presented in graphic form.

Book Gun Tube on a Flexible Cradle

Download or read book Gun Tube on a Flexible Cradle written by C. C. Fretwell and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the motion of a flexible cradle on which the recoiling parts move supported by flexible clips attached to the cradle. The motion of the gun tube is assumed to be prescribed. The cradle is represented by a uniform beam which is supported by a pin support and a rotational spring at one end and a linear spring at an interior point. The recoiling parts, assumed to be rigid mass, are supported on two linear springs which are fixed to the cradle. A pair of coupled integral equations are obtained which define the motion of the recoiling parts and a numerical technique is developed for their solution. (Author).

Book Yawing and Balloting Motion of a Projectile in the Bore of a Gun with Application to Gun Tube Damage

Download or read book Yawing and Balloting Motion of a Projectile in the Bore of a Gun with Application to Gun Tube Damage written by Evan Harris Walker and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New basis equations of motion are derived to describe in bore shell yawing and balloting motion. It is shown that the prior equations of Reno and Thomas are not satisfactory. These equations are used to derive expressions for the growth of balloting motion. Application of these equations to a mechanical failure of a shell in an 8-in. howitzer XM201 test program shows the new treatment accounts for the observed tube damage. This approach provides a basis for calculating causes and probability of occurrences of severe balloting.

Book Dynamics of Rigid Guns with Straight Tubes

Download or read book Dynamics of Rigid Guns with Straight Tubes written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the four sections in this report deals with the motion, the forces, and the moments experienced by a rigid gun with a straight axis and an offset breech, and with a certain simple type of support that attaches the gun to a Galilean reference frame. The analysis treats the behavior of the system while the projectile is in the barrel. After the projectile leaves the muzzle, its motion and that of the gun are independent, and they may be analyzed by the dynamical theory of a single rigid body. The motion of the projectile with respect to the tube is regarded as known. Also, the base pressures on the projectile and the tube are regarded as known functions of time. Geometrically, the projectile is regarded as a body of revolution that fits snuggly in the tube, so that there is no balloting, However, a lopsided distribution of mass density in the projectile is admitted in Sections 1,2, and 3. In Section 4, only a balanced projectile is considered. In applications of the momentum principles, the momentum of gases in the tube is neglected. It can be introduced empirically by augmenting the mass of the projectile by a portion of the mass of the charge. This concept of effective mass has a precedent in other branches of fluid mechanics.
