Despite its significance, this development and transformation, not only of public and private organizations but also our working environment and way of living, has received little scholarly attention compared to other major societal movements. Since its conceptualization in 1995 the phenomena of projectification has grown in scope, and researchers beyond management and organization studies have argued for and applied a broader and critical perspective to what projects are and how we are to understand the term. This volume gathers researchers who critically examine the function and effects of “the project”, and analyzes the logic, politics, discursive practices and contexts of projectification. The book consolidates this research field by illustrating theoretical perspectives on, and empirical implications of, projectification. It also highlights the need for more research, and provides encouragements for other disciplines to scrutinize this phenomenon from other perspectives.

The data for the studies was collected through interviews with six companies in Sweden and China and a global web-based questionnaire that garnered 208 responses. Using this data the authors conducted four studies, employing various research methodologies, to investigate the different systems of governance and their relationships to organizational success. Based on these results, the authors discovered that organizational enablers (including key factors such as leadership, governance, and influence of project managers) have a critical impact on how organizations operate, adapt to market fluctuations and forces, and make essential changes over time.

This study identifies organizational enablers (OEs) for governance and governmentality in the realm of projects in project-based organizations (PBOs). Our research design is a multiple case study with six firms in Sweden and China. Cases with distinct characteristics (size, degree of projectification, sector, and geographical location) were purposefully chosen to allow for identifying the widest number of possible enablers and their contexts to increase the likelihood of unpacking the mystery of what enables governance and governmentality in PBOs. By taking institutional theory as the theoretical perspective, we found that OEs are interwoven, albeit with different strengths, within the three pillars of institutional theory (the regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive pillars). We found that OEs for project governance and governance of projects fall predominantly into the category of regulative and normative pillars, whereas OEs for governmentality belong mainly to the cultural-cognitive pillar of institutional theory. By analyzing the collective effects these enablers have in organizations, we found that they provide for an ambidexterity of flexibility and stability, which allows organizations to align their internal characteristics with their organizational context. Managerial and theoretical implications of the results are then discussed.
