The victims were excursionists, the vast number of whom were Irish or Irish-Americans, who had traveled from Scranton to Hazleton to celebrate the birth of Father Mathew Theobold, the Irish Apostle of Temperance, with a parade and picnic arranged by the Total Catholic Abstinence Union.In anticipation of moving as many as 10,000 passengers between Hazleton and Scranton on eight trains, consisting of eighty-seven cars, the Lehigh Valley Railroad had issued special orders to its crew, the most important of which was "to protect your rear."After the Father Mathew Men had marched and the Father Mathew Cadets had displayed their skill in precision drills, the disciples of temperance headed for the Hazleton train station and home. It was on their return that sixty-four people would meet their deaths on the Lehigh Valley road.The primary source of information for this book was the newspapers. In addition to newspaper interviews with eyewitnesses to the disaster, additional information was gleaned from census schedules, city directories, ancestry message boards, death notices, obituaries, and correspondence with descendants of those killed at Mud Run. Together, they tell the story of what went wrong on that beautiful autumn day at a remote signal station in Carbon County.

She explains how she - now in her late 70s - found herself the outspoken spokesperson for the survivors of the crash, interviewed here and abroad and even one of the characters portrayed in David Hare's The Permanent Way. Although liability has finally been admitted, as of October 2004, there has been no resolution to this tragedy, nor a public enquiry into how it happened.

Book excerpt: It was 1935. The United States was between The Great Depression and World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was offering the country a New Deal and new hope. In the small Potomac River town of Williamsport, MD, the students at the high school were planning a science field trip to the annual chemistry night at the University of Maryland in College Park. On the night of April 11, 1935, the students traveled after school to the college. The students and their teacher left College Park at about 11:00 PM for home. It had gotten foggy and was raining. It was an especially dark night. The school bus enroute to Williamsport was hit by a Baltimore and Ohio flyer train at a dangerous grade crossing in Rockville, MD. Fourteen Williamsport students were killed that night and there were fifteen survivors. This accident stunned the nation and led President Roosevelt to allow for funding to eliminate dangerous railroad crossings across the country. In Williamsport, the citizens moved ahead in their grief and anguish to build a beautiful library in memory of the students who lost their lives in the Rockville tragedy.
