They are etched with ancient hieroglyphs that no one can understand -- no one but archaeologist Kaden Jaxx. What's more, the pyramids are giving off energy. Lots of energy. Enough to power half of the United States. But Jaxx discovers his Black Ops bosses are hiding an Earth-shattering truth -- an ancient civilization may still be on that moon. And a secret launch to that moon is imminent. Jaxx hires a brilliant but impulsive reporter who digs into the agency's mandate. Book Who Are You

Download or read book Who Are You written by Alex Custodio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Game Boy Advance platform as computational system and cultural artifact, from its 2001 release through hacks, mods, emulations, homebrew afterlives. In 2002, Nintendo of America launched an international marketing campaign for the Game Boy Advance that revolved around the slogan “Who Are You?”—asking potential buyers which Nintendo character, game, or even device they identified with and attempting to sell a new product by exploiting players' nostalgic connections to earlier ones. Today, nearly two decades after its release, and despite the development of newer and more powerful systems, Nintendo's Game Boy Advance lives on, through a community that continues to hack, modify, emulate, make, break, remake, redesign, trade, use, love, and play with the platform. In this book Alex Custodio traces the network of hardware and software afterlives of the Game Boy Advance platform. Each chapter considers a component of this network—hardware, software, peripheral, or practice—that illuminates the platform's unique features as a computational system and a cultural artifact. Examining the evolution of the design and architecture of Nintendo's handhelds and home consoles, and the constraints imposed on developers and players, for example, Custodio finds that Nintendo essentially embeds nostalgia into its hardware. She explores Nintendo's expansion of the platform through interoperability; physical and affective engagement with the Game Boy Advance; portability, private space, and social interaction; the platformization of nostalgia; fan-generated content including homebrew, hacking, and hardware modding; and e-waste—the final afterlife of consumer electronics. Although the Game Boy Advance is neither the most powerful nor the most popular of Nintendo's handhelds, Custodio argues, it is the platform that most fundamentally embodies Nintendo's reliance on the aesthetics and materiality of nostalgia.

Book excerpt: Plato's legendary account of a sunken island civilization called Atlantis hasfascinated adventurers for centuries. Recent efforts to fi nd Plato's lost island haveculminated in two exciting underwater surveys in the Eastern Mediterranean thatwere staged in 2004 and 2006-both of which uncovered tantalizing evidencethat strongly merits additional inquiry. In this color-illustrated book, CommodoreRobert S. Bates sifts through the acquired evidence and argues that our search forAtlantis-or what some call Eden-may now be narrowed to a sunken continentadjacent to Cyprus that geologists located decades ago. The History Channelfunded and fi lmed the second expedition to this site, but you will learn in thisbook why a third expedition may now be warranted. In recognition of the likely confl uence of the two great legends of Atlantis andEden, Bates calls the ongoing research into this sunken land the Eden-AtlantisProject. This short book offers you a thoroughreview of the recently obtained archeologicalevidence pointing to an Eastern Mediterraneanlocation for Eden-Atlantis. It also links thesenew scientifi c facts with the historical evidencethat a proto-civilization may have preceded theknown civilizations of the ancient Near East.

Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestselling Travel Memoir! The author of Turn Right at Machu Picchu travels the globe in search of the world’s most famous lost city. “Adventurous, inquisitive and mirthful, Mark Adams gamely sifts through the eons of rumor, science, and lore to find a place that, in the end, seems startlingly real indeed.”—Hampton Sides A few years ago, Mark Adams made a strange discovery: Far from alien conspiracy theories and other pop culture myths, everything we know about the legendary lost city of Atlantis comes from the work of one man, the Greek philosopher Plato. Stranger still: Adams learned there is an entire global sub-culture of amateur explorers who are still actively and obsessively searching for this sunken city, based entirely on Plato’s detailed clues. What Adams didn’t realize was that Atlantis is kind of like a virus—and he’d been exposed. In Meet Me in Atlantis, Adams racks up frequent-flier miles tracking down these Atlantis obsessives, trying to determine why they believe it's possible to find the world's most famous lost city—and whether any of their theories could prove or disprove its existence. The result is a classic quest that takes readers to fascinating locations to meet irresistible characters; and a deep, often humorous look at the human longing to rediscover a lost world.

Book excerpt: With the widespread interest in digital entertainment and the advances in the technologies of computer graphics, multimedia and virtual reality technologies, the new area of “Edutainment” has been accepted as a union of education and computer entertainment. Edutainment is recognized as an effective way of learning through a medium, such as a computer, software, games or AR/VR applications, that both educates and entertains. The Edutainment conference series was established and followed as a special event for the new interests in e-learning and digital entertainment. The main purpose of Edutainment conferences is the discussion, presentation, and information exchange of scientific and technological developments in the new community. The Edutainment conference series is a very interesting opportunity for researchers, engineers, and graduate students who wish to communicate at these international annual events. The conference series includes plenary invited talks, workshops, tutorials, paper presen- tion tracks, and panel discussions. The Edutainment conference series was initiated in Hangzhou, China in 2006. Following the success of the first (Edutainment 2006 in Hangzhou, China), the second (Edutainment 2007 in Hong Kong, China), and the third events (Edutainment 2008 in Nanjing, China), Edutainment 2009 was held August 9–11, 2009 in Banff, Canada. This year, we received 116 submissions from 25 different countries and regions - cluding Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, UK, and USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of possible power sources for the moored, independent random-detector system of Project Atlantis is presented. Relatively low power-generation rates--of the order of one to 100 watts--should be adequate but that these rates should be maintained for at least one year and preferably longer. (t has also been assumed that, if the power is generated at low voltages, the voltage can be stepped up to the desired levels by electronic components, motor-driven generator sets, parallel charging of single cells of a storage battery, or similar procedures. In addition, if short-duration pulses of high power are needed, these will be obtained from a power source. It has been assumed that a distinct advantage accrues if the power-generating device is located several hundred feet below the surface of the ocean. Consequently, attention has been given to surface-situated devices, but a thorough investigation has not been made. (Author).

Book excerpt: Plato provided 53 physical clues in his famous dialogue Critias -- the original account of the story of Atlantis that is the sole basis of all Atlantis research. The book proves that the island of Cyprus and the underwater landscape just south of Cyprus is a perfect match with 51 of these clues. Exclusive 3D bathymetric maps based on new scientific data show for the first time a stretch of sunken land off of Cyprus. The general layout of the landscape of Atlantis as described by Plato is easily discernible on this underwater land mass, as well as the precise location of its capital-Atlantis City. This robust empirical data is joined with other original findings based on mythological analysis and historical research, making the case for Cyprus increasingly obvious. With this compelling new interpretation of Plato, author Robert Sarmast brings the legendary island of Atlantis alive for the first time. With the location so clearly mapped in this book, the next step in this exciting research is an expedition to the region. Humankind may soon witness the filming of the colossal ruins of this once-mighty empire and proceed to resurrect Atlantis from its watery tomb!
