Book The Law Enforcement Handbook

Download or read book The Law Enforcement Handbook written by Desmond Rowland and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law Enforcement Handbook is designed to provide the basic grounding a police officer requires to perform effectively while carrying out the duties of a patrol officer or criminal investigator. Because the division between patrol and investigative duties varies considerably among police forces, and may not exist in smaller departments, the author has taken a comprehensive approach that follows the officer from the initial stop of a suspect on the street to testimony in court. This book can be used as a core text for recruit training, as a handbook for more experienced officers, as a training manual for security personnel without prior police experience, or as a resource book in university police science courses. A thorough mastery of the material presented in this book will provide the information required to handle virtually all normal police duties, up to and including major criminal investigations. This book, written by a former police officer, takes a practical approach to the police profession and is designed to provide detailed information and quick reference access.

Book The Law Officer s Pocket Manual

Download or read book The Law Officer s Pocket Manual written by John G. Miles Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law Officer’s Pocket Manual is a handy, pocket-sized, spiral-bound manual that highlights basic legal rules for quick reference and offers examples showing how those rules are applied. The manual provides concise guidance based on U.S. Supreme Court rulings on constitutional law issues and other legal developments, covering arrest, search, surveillance, and other routine as well as sensitive areas of law enforcement. It includes more than 100 examples drawn from leading cases to provide guidance on how to act in a wide variety of situations. The 2020 edition is completely updated to reflect recent court decisions. This book helps you keep track of everything in a readable and easy-to-carry format. Some of the most important case rulings from the past 12 months include: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that probable cause for an arrest precludes a later First Amendment retaliatory arrest claim. The U.S. Supreme Court determined that the exigent circumstances doctrine to the Fourth Amendment will generally allow for a blood draw from an unconscious motorist to be performed without a warrant. The Eleventh Circuit ruled that seizing items, such as a mobile phone, from bystanders violates clearly established law and subjects the officer to a civil rights lawsuit. The Ninth Circuit ruled that the seizure of a mobile phone without a warrant following a high-speed chase was justified as an inventory search under the Fourth Amendment. The Second Circuit dove into the circuit split on rental car searches, deciding that an unlicensed driver not in lawful possession of the vehicle cannot challenge the search. The Seventh Circuit explained that the exclusionary rule does not apply to an illegal entry if there is overwhelming evidence of probable cause and a search warrant was planned before entry. The Second Circuit reaffirmed the principle that prolonging a traffic stop is not unconstitutional if the reason is supported by reasonable suspicion. Annually updated since 1972, The Law Enforcement Pocket Manual, provides police officers, criminal justice practitioners, and students with historical and social context for their role in criminal justice and the guidelines that should be followed in day-to-day policing activities. Book Basic Handbook of Police Supervision A Practical Guide for Law Enforcement Supervisors

Download or read book Basic Handbook of Police Supervision A Practical Guide for Law Enforcement Supervisors written by Gerald W. Garner and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated handbook provides reliable guidance on what to do next and offers practical, no-frills advice about what to do to counter the day-to-day challenges and outright calamities that make up the first-line leader’s work life. Perhaps even more important, it offers time-proven recommendations on how to prevent a bothersome situation from escalating into crisis proportions in the first place. It will prove equally useful to the veteran, novice or future law enforcement supervisor. Its sound advice will help him retain his emotional as well as physical and moral health in a real-world environment that seems to become more challenging every day. It will help him to lead and bring his people to share his practices and beliefs in doing a very critical job the right way. Just as it should be, the handbook is short on theory and long on “how to” advice. It is literally a resource that the supervisor can tuck into an equipment bag or otherwise keep close at hand. It likewise will aid him in carrying out the very practical tasks of communicating effectively; evaluating employee performance, correcting inappropriate behavior and helping his officers survive both on the street and in the police organization. A new chapter has been added on the topic of how to lead successfully during the current, very challenging environment for law enforcement, entitled “How to Lead During Challenging Times.” Summary boxes have been interspersed throughout the text that emphasize important points for police leaders to remember. Meanwhile, the handbook will assist the law enforcement leader in working well with his own boss and planning his own career. There is no job description in the world quite like that of first-line law enforcement boss. The job is as unique as it is difficult and vital to the success of any successful police organization. This book will help them become even better at their very important job.

Book The Law Officer s Pocket Manual

Download or read book The Law Officer s Pocket Manual written by John G. Miles Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 176 pages. The 2021 edition is completely updated to reflect recent court decisions. This book helps you keep track of everything in a readable and easy-to-carry format. Some important case rulings from the past 12 months include: The U.S. Supreme Court made clear that it is common sense for an officer pulling over a vehicle to assume, without additional evidence, that the driver is the registered owner. The U.S. Supreme Court appeared to signal the end to so-called Bivens suits filed against federal officers for constitutional violations. The First Circuit extended the community caretaking doctrine to the home in finding officers’ warrantless entry justified. In the continuing evolution of the stop-and-frisk doctrine, the Second Circuit ruled that officers need more than a belief that a suspect possess something illicit—they must reasonably believe the suspect may pose a threat. The Tenth Circuit ruled that an officer’s 15-minute phone call to a national database was reasonable and did not impermissibly extend a traffic stop. The Seventh Circuit said that the smell of marijuana combined with a driver’s "shocked" body language justified a trunk search. The Fourth Circuit tossed a man’s gun convictions after the officers arrested the man at his girlfriend’s residence without probable cause that he lived there.
