Book The Progress of Japan 1853 1871

Download or read book The Progress of Japan 1853 1871 written by John Harington Gubbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progress of Japan, 1853-1871 Six lectures given in the University of Oxford during 1909-10 are the basis of this book. They are published as delivered, with only that amount of revision which publication seemed to require. The aim in view has been to give a slight sketch of the progress of Japan in the period of transition which lay, so to speak, between the old life and the new. The appendixes include documents which I have added in order to save the reader the trouble of looking for them elsewhere, and others which were accessible only in the Japanese text. To Sir Ernest Satow my best thanks are due for the loan of books, for information on various points possessed by no one else, and for much valuable criticism. For advice in the treatment of the subject, and for many useful suggestions, I am also indebted to Mr. S. Tuke. And the help of every kind rendered by my wife from first to last I gratefully acknowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Perry Expedition and the Opening of Japan to the West 1853 1873

This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron of four ships sailed into Tokyo Bay on July 8, 1853, the Japanese Tokugawa government had already fended off similarly unwelcome intrusions by the French, the Russians, the Dutch, and the British. These Western imperialists had the power and the means to force Japan into the kinds of treaties that would effectively spell the end of Japan’s autonomy, maybe even its existence as an independent country. At the same moment, Japan was also grappling with a serious insurrection, the death of an emperor, and the death of a shogun—as well as with a series of natural disasters and associated famines. The Japanese response to this incredible series of catastrophes would permanently alter the balance of geopolitical power around the world. Drawing on the best recent scholarship, this short introductory volume examines the motivations and maneuvers of the major participants in the conflict and sets the "opening" of Japan in the context of broader global history. Selections from twenty-nine primary sources provide firsthand accounts of the event from a variety of perspectives. Several illustrations are also included, along with a note on historiographic interpretation.

Book excerpt: The continued appearance of the American and Russion squadrons in 1853 and 1854 left Japan no option but to accept the new reality of Western naval might, and agree to the opening of a few of its ports. This book pieces together a picture of the competition and cooperation, distrust and open hostility that marked the joint Western enterprise.

Book Japan and the Dutch 1600 1853

Download or read book Japan and the Dutch 1600 1853 written by Grant K. Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of Dutch influence on Japan during the so-called 'closed centuries' between 1640 and 1853. Dutch maritime traders provided the only commercial link which Japan maintained with the west, and were thus the sole channel for western ideas and knowledge to reach neo-Confucian society. Professor Goodman explains the circumstances of the Dutch themselves in Japan during the seventeenth century, and the historical and intellectual milieu within which 'Dutch studies' were nurtured. He traces the initial interest of the Shogun government in European astronomy and medicine, and the gradual development of interest in wider spheres of western knowledge and culture.

Book Photography in Japan 1853 1912

Download or read book Photography in Japan 1853 1912 written by Terry Bennett and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography in Japan 1853-1912 is a fascinating visual record of Japanese culture during its metamorphosis from a feudal society to a modern, industrial nation at a time when the art of photography was still in its infancy. The 350 rare and antique photos in this book, most of them published here for the first time, chronicle the introduction of photography in Japan and early Japanese photography. The images are more than just a history of photography in Japan; they are vital in helping to understand the dramatic changes that occurred in Japan during the mid-nineteenth century. These rare Japanese photographs--whether sensational or everyday, intimate or panoramic--document a nation about to abandon its traditional ways and enter the modern era. Taken between 1853 and 1912 by the most important Japanese and foreign photographers working in Japan, this is the first book to document the history of early photography in Japan a comprehensive and systematic way.
