Book Progress in Art and Architecture With Precedents for Ornament Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress in Art and Architecture, With Precedents for Ornament The substance of the following pages was prepared originally in the form of a consecutive series of papers, to be read before the Architectural Association of London during its subsequent sessions; and portions have already appeared in several of the professional journals at the time of their delivery: they are now, however, for the first time presented to the public in the manner in which it was always designed that they should be united, and have been likewise most carefully revised, while many parts have been entirely re-written. The interest attached to the subjects treated of in them has, I apprehend, in nowise become diminished in the interval that has elapsed since the papers were first delivered; nay, I venture to hope that the principles which are contended for therein have, since that time, gradually leavened both the profession arid the public, urged powerfully, as they have been, by authors of whom the age may justly be proud, and whose talents Art may be thankful to have enlisted in her service, in the wake of whom I fear it seems presumption in me to launch so humble a bark but as it often happens that an echo is heard when the voice which gave it birth passed unnoticed, so perhaps some may be induced to listen even to my feeble remonstrance, whom prejudice has prevented from receiving the truth from another and a better quarter or at least I hope. Book Motherland and Progress

Download or read book Motherland and Progress written by József Sisa and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents. "Motherland and Progress" – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future.

Book Greek and Gothic Progress and Decay in the Three Arts of Architecture Sculpture and Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek and Gothic Progress and Decay in the Three Arts of Architecture Sculpture and Painting Classic Reprint written by Richard St. John Tyrwhitt and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek and Gothic, Progress and Decay in the Three Arts of Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting The latter part of this book has already appeared before the public, under the kind editorship of Miss Yonge, in the Monthly Packet. It there found readers enough to invite republication; and it has seemed best to add a connected sketch of ancient Greek and Roman arts and monuments. I hope the whole may form a readable handbook, or guide to a course of study. It may possibly show the way into a department of history which becomes daily of more importance. Ancient monuments yield to time, destruction, and restoration, and lose their value as documents; or new light is thrown on what remains. The Muse of History is like the Sibyl in respect of burning her books; but their relics are always worth their price. I do not know of any other connected account of parallel progress and decay in the Three Arts of Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting, since Lord Lindsay's Christian Art.
