Book excerpt: Progress in Ape Research presents the papers reported in the conference organized by the staff of Yerkes Primate Research Center in celebrating the centenary of Dr. Robert Mearns Yerkes' birth, who gave significant contributions to ape research. This book is divided into four sections representing the sessions of the conference. First, the historical beginnings of research on great apes are presented. The other three sections deal mainly with the ongoing studies at the Yerkes Primate Research Center, particularly, in the field of communication and language in great apes, utilization of chimpanzees as biomedical models, and the comparative perspectives of human origins.Presentations by outstanding scientists from other institutions are also shown. The conference is arranged to honor the memory of Dr. Robert Mearns Yerkes, to inspire, and to emphasize some of the areas in psychobiological and medical sciences to which research on great apes is making a contribution.

Book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques

Download or read book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques written by JUCKER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 36 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains 5 articles and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connec tion with the previous volumes. While all articles deal with some of the topical aspects of drug research, the contribution by Robert R. Ruffolo et al. on "Drug receptors and control of the cardiovas cular system: Recent advances" is indeed in its own right a mono graphic presentation of this important domain. The remaining four reviews provide an overview of the work in volved in the search for new and better medicines, with a focus on chemical, pharmacological, toxicological, biological, biochemical and molecular modeling studies. In the 31 years this series has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the in dividual articles, and, last but not least, the reviewers have all con tributed greatly to the success of PDR. Although many comments received have been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reconsider the current position and the direction of such a series. So far, it has been the Editor's aim to help spread informa tion on the vast domain of drug research, and to provide the reader with a tool helping him or her to keep abreast of the latest develop ments and trends.

Book Progress in Research on Energy and Protein Metabolism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book compiles the scientific content of the International Symposium on Energy & Protein Metabolism and Nutrition, in Rostock-Warnemünde 13th-18th September 2003. Specialists from all over the world working in energy and protein metabolism research were assembled to discuss scientific matters of physiology, nutrition, immunology and genetics. All scientific contributions, presented as oral communications or posters, are published in this book. Additionally to these more than 150 articles and 10 review papers, presented by invited speakers, give an overview of the state of the art in special research areas of energy and protein metabolism. The book presents latest results in topics of energy metabolism such as environmental aspects of energy homeostasis, dietary and genetic aspects as well as tissue, organ and whole body energy metabolism and methodology. Furthermore this compilation also gives insight in current affairs of protein research, i.e. protein metabolism and microbiology in the gastro-intestinal tract and requirements and post-absorptive metabolism of amino acids. Apart from these specific questions other topics concerning genes and nutrition or modelling and regulation of energy and protein status were of common interest. The intention of these proceedings is to disseminate latest perceptions of energy and protein research and with this to attempt the connection of areas in animal and human life sciences."

Book Gene Therapy and Cancer Research Progress

Download or read book Gene Therapy and Cancer Research Progress written by Jessica L. Lewis and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genes, which are carried on chromosomes, are the basic physical and functional units of heredity. Genes are specific sequences of bases that encode instructions on how to make proteins. Although genes get a lot of attention, it's the proteins that perform most life functions and even make up the majority of cellular structures. When genes are altered so that the encoded proteins are unable to carry out their normal functions, genetic disorders can result. Gene therapy is an experimental treatment that involves introducing genetic material into a person's cells to fight disease. Gene therapy is being studied in clinical trials for many different types of cancer and for numerous other diseases. This new book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

Book Recent Progress in Hormone Research

Download or read book Recent Progress in Hormone Research written by Gregory Pincus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Hormone Research: Volume II is a collection of papers presented at the proceedings of the 1946 Laurentian Hormone Conference, held in St. Adele-on-High. This volume is organized into five parts encompassing 14 chapters that explore the methods of hormone analysis, the pituitary and metabolic hormones, and the clinical aspects of endocrinology. The first part discusses some applications of both ultraviolet and infrared absorption spectroscopy to the problem of the elucidation of the structure of sterol compounds. The subsequent parts cover the humoral or nervous factors, which determine the level of functional activity of the pituitary-adrenal system, as well as the mechanism of androgen and estrogen hormone metabolism. These topics are followed by discussions on the hormonal influences on the pancreatic function and the action of the thyroid hormones on diabetes. The concluding part examines the various types of testicular and ovarian deficiency and some related phenomena from the clinical standpoint. This part also explores the genetic and endocrine factors in the growth and development of childhood and adolescence. This book will prove useful to endocrinologists and developmental biologists.
